Re: Evangelion 3.333 Bluray coming out on 8/25
With Q now being released on its 'definitive version' (at least for now), is there a possibility for Jo and Ha being re-released on 4K? I mean, it would be strange for Q being the only one with the .XXX on its name. Maybe the two of them on one package (1.111 & 2.222) and later on 3.333 and 3.0...

Re: How do you feel about Shinji ending up with Mari?
We actually have a valid justification for why she didn’t get more development: 2.0 is a fucking bloated mess and they didn’t want to make it an even bigger bloated mess by sticking in more Mari scenes, and 3.0 didn’t really have any logical place to stick a Mari-centric subplot. That being said, I...

Re: How do you feel about Shinji ending up with Mari?
I thought it worked thematically - new faces, new connections, new beginnings, etc. - but I’m not sure the abstract meta-level thematics justify presenting Mari as a character with virtually no development, coherent motives, defining personality traits, etc. She’s just a big black box from beginning...

Re: Amazon Prime English Dub Cast
Well the fact that they reversed course on the dub cast for Amazon was a strong hint that the Netflix dub did not go over well, but the fact that the Amazon translations are still Kanemitsu’d to hell suggests Khara themselves still aren’t fully clear as to why. My understanding is that Khara owns th...

Re: How do you feel about NTE? + Rank the movies!
I’m still teetering drastically on 3+1 on account of it having some of my favorite and least favorite things in the entire series. But for me, the tentative final ranking would be 3+1 > 3.0 > 1.0 > 2.0 Suffice to say I don’t see eye-to-eye at all with people who loved #2 and hated #3, which seems to...

Re: Gendo's office - floor symbols in Rebuild
Would be very curious to know which specific book(s) were Anno’s go-to sources on Western occultist trivia and visual references. There couldn’t have been that many available in Japan in the early 1990s? He definitely spent at least a few weekends going hog-wild on this stuff and felt strongly enoug...

Re: Amazon Prime English Dub Cast
The common denominator between all of them is Khara and their perceived clout ever since Shin Godzilla deals were being made between Khara and Toho. Curious on your sources about this being Godzilla -related? My understanding is that all this drama about the localization started when (due in part t...

I wrote about Eva 1.0 for money
Hey guys how's it going. Any new Eva movies since I last visited? Anyway uhh, for the 10th anniversary of Evangelion 1.0 (!!!!) I leveraged my weeb-insider position at The Film Stage to do an overlong, nerdgasming writeup of the film and Anno's legacy in general in exchange for a sweet payday of lit...

Re: Anno Hideaki's Evangelion: Interview with Azuma Hiroki
Half-decade necrothreading just to mention that Eva 's influence from Aum Shinrikyo is super interesting to me and this is one of the only concrete sources I can find attesting to it. The connection seems very convincing to me based on what (admittedly little) I know about Aum's ideology: their para...

Re: Sexualisation of men in films
It was a cynical dig, yes, and more at the popular practice of progressivism than its ostensible values. The rest of the post was in earnest. I'm not sure that the trafficking of crass titillation and objectification of the human body as commercial entertainment is really a good thing for society on...

Re: Hardcore Henry
This movie looks pretty nauseating, in the most literal physical sense. Outside of the first-person gimmick (I don't think I've ever seen a first-person camera in cinema that didn't feel like a gimmick) it just seems like one of those Jason Statham movies, only more British.

Re: War anime recommendation
Galactic Heroes is probably the only one that has anything interesting to say about IRL war, beyond just using it as a backdrop for action and melodrama. I guess a lot of the Gundamns and mech stuff influenced by them have been a means of Japanese pop culture talking about warfare in a "safe&q...

Has anyone mentioned ITT how Japan has notoriously draconian drug laws
Also, mental health problems can be plenty psychedelic as is. Depression, mysticism and psychedelia all have a certain degree of natural overlap.

Re: The Velvet Thread (Persona Series/Spinoffs General Thread)
Remember how certain portions of the internet were going into hysterics about how Final wasn't going to be localized because Atlus USA didn't announce it as soon as the game came out in Japan? Remember how literally the exact same thing happened with Catherine a few years ago? Man. The Internet is s...

Re: Sexualisation of men in films
Women are becoming an increasingly recognized and lucrative demographic for popular entertainment. Sex sells. Fair's fair. Also what Nuke said. If you're gonna shove gratuitous tits in my face Hollywood/Japan, at least put in something for the ladies to assuage my guilty conscience. That's what bein...

Re: Fullmetal Alchemist Gets Live Action Movie
Meh. Personally I'd rather see a continuation of the 2003 anime series reuniting the key creative staff (Seiji Mizushima, Sho Aikawa, Michiru Oshima) and maybe bringing on Hiromu Arakawa again as a supervisor but I may be the only person who does.

Re: Favorite Video Games
I tried making a 3x3 for a certain imageboard but then I realized there were three games I couldn't bear to leave off the list. Then I tried making a 4x4 and I realized I couldn't think of four additional games I'd classify in the same caliber as the rest. So I made an awkward 3x4 diagram instead, o...

The horses are bad enough on their own but once you've made the mental connection to Anchorman you can never go back.
