Most of the time, protagonists of those series are NEETs, shut ins, social outcasts or straight up assholes, that have no one to connect them to the old world, so they can fully immerse themselves in a new sandbox, usually unbound by pesky laws and morality of their old dimension.

Personally I'm more of a Digimon fan, especially first gen and Tamers. But when I was younger I did had a pokemon phase.
