This whole event really bothered me, as the complaints were so alien that I had trouble finding any understanding or empathy for the protesters at all. I ended up thinking about it a lot. I went and read the protesters' manifesto on Tumblr in the hope that maybe I could come to some understandin...

I'm a horrible gamer, but I have probably spent more time on Spinball than any other Sonic game and still find it fun.

Having been through a few Mandarake branches, Nakano Broadway, and a good chunk of Akihabara on several occasions without much success, I'm sort of unclear on where to find them in Japan, either.

I assume you're talking about the US domestic cover with the giant Rei head -- have never seen that on a larger poster than the ones that came with the DVDs themselves (and those are all creased up). There's a company called Asylum Anime that specializes in authentic Japanese posters...

Non-expert opinion: Largely seems to be a codification of the status quo, really. But I wonder what trademarks they are specifically interested in protecting, and why. Remember that the primary purpose of trademarks are to distinguish your business, brand, or product from others -- this is why they ...

My guess -- and this is complete speculation -- is that the market for physical media is shrinking every year, and for physical-store sales even more, so this allows Funimation to focus on online presence and offload the details of getting product to stores to Universal. Then again, I am one of thos...

https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/06/write_down_your.html FWIW the advice I gave above is easily compatible with this: write down your master password and keep the rest in a password store ("written down" digitally). That's honestly more what I was thinking about. Ju...

For the record, I practice the below and store my secrets in pass . Given how many websites don't store passwords safely, are likely to be breached, and don't perform proper rate-limiting on brute-force password attacks*, the best practice for passwords is clearly as follows: 0) Only mem...

I'm trying to train myself to need less sleep. I'm tired of sleeping for ten hours because then it just feels like I've wasted a few hours when I could have been doing something else. When I was in college, I tried to induce myself into a polyphasic sleep pattern so that I would only sl...

Oh, and if you're sleeping right, you should be able to avoid caffeine, which is good for your health and your wallet. And you'll probably have to start laying off the chocolate as well as caffeinated after 4 PM as well.

SSD and I can attest -- it's fun turning thirty!

There's some Phantasy Star stuff still up at archive.org, which has some sort of official relationship with Sega and other rightsholders allowing them to be played for free. Sonic Spinball's still up as well, which was also mentioned in the article.

Daily exercise will make it a lot easier to sleep at night. Even switching from sitting for eight hours a day to standing while working for 2-3 hours a day will help. Here's my experience as someone who needs eight to nine hours of sleep a night, but has hobbies that aren't conducive to that...

I've found that a lot of people taking out student loans do it so that they can go to the ivies or whatever top prestigious school they want to go to, and I think that attitude comes from ignorance about just what kind of education you can get at a college that doesn't have a fancy name att...

Two Canadians barred from leaving Malaysia on the grounds they did spiritual damage to a mountain, causing a magnitude 5.9 quake . If they had stripped down in Canada at one of the most famous places in the nation, they'd probably at least be cited for something, too. The way this story's b...

The particular people in this story were Latino, Ray. The practices of the NYPD and their statistical oddities have been discussed in a lot of other forums.

I think that we need to wind up this topic.
