Re: Superhero/Comic Based Films & Tv - Vol.2

Not to mention it wouldn't work out financially, even for them. Consider everything they got from the Fox purchase. The Simpsons, Avatar, Ice Age, Alien, Predator, Planet of the Apes, X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and National Geographic . That's what's known in the industry as a metric shitload of int...

Re: The Taco Bell Effect

My point still stands, which is that you mostly didn't see shows like that after the 1990s. Avatar was the only real exception, and even that was born mostly out of a desire to cash in on the mid-2000s anime craze. Avatar used a lot of the tropes and visual motifs common to contemporary anime, but n...

Re: Superhero/Comic Based Films & Tv - Vol.2

This is changing the subject, but how likely do you guys think this is?
Disney definitely wants full control of Spider-Man and the characters related to him, but they purchased Fox in 2019, and that was a huge acquisition even by their standards.

Re: The Taco Bell Effect

Gargoyles wasn't really "ahead of its time", not in the way a lot of people seem to be under the impression it was. It was a part of wave of "serious" action/adventure shows that were popular in the 1990s, with examples including Batman: The Animated Series, Exo-Squad, Superman:...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Watching Fena: Pirate Princess on Toonami. I’m kind of disappointed that Dr. Stone is off their lineup, but this series seems to be a worthy successor. With the obvious exception of One Piece, 18th-century pirates are a theme that doesn’t pop up much in anime, so this show looks interesting.

Re: The Taco Bell Effect

It helps to have a coherent definition of what anime is: from the Western perspective it is the body of animated works produced for a Japanese market. It doesn't matter if they're made in Japan (some are made in China or Japan or the U.S., and Japan produces plenty of exports that never see the Jap...

Re: How do you feel about Shinji ending up with Mari?

Much as I disapprove of it from a narrative perspective, I do think the idea of Shinji living with Mari opens up some humorous possibilities. I can picture the two of them living in a house with half a dozen cats because Mari can’t resist adopting them. Shinji, meanwhile, is a semi-successful surrea...

The Taco Bell Effect

I’m not sure whether this subject is better suited to this subforum or the manga/anime one, because it sort of discusses both topics. But it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, and want to hear you guys’s opinions on. I call it the Taco Bell Effect. Imagine you grew up in Mexico, and ...

Re: Mad God-- Phil Tippett's Stop Motion Magnum Opus

Wes Anderson also made two stop-motion animated movies— Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle Of Dogs. Ironically, Isle of Dogs, despite being an adult animated movie that wasn’t a comedy, ended up being the more successful of the two.

Re: Mad God-- Phil Tippett's Stop Motion Magnum Opus

I’m not trailing about live-action movies that use stop motion for practical effects. Those, as you mention, have a long and successful history. Movies that are completely stop-motion? Not so much. You get a few breakout hits here and there, like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Chicken Run, but b...

Re: How do you feel about Shinji ending up with Mari?

Well, in the fourth movie, I particularly got it from the scene when they’re both in Mari’s room and Asuka is talking to Mari about how she “doesn’t need boys”.

Re: Mad God-- Phil Tippett's Stop Motion Magnum Opus

For whatever reason, stop-motion has never really been used for any major Hollywood blockbuster. The closest thing I can think of to an exception is Chicken Run , but that was a British movie. Mostly it’s small, independent movies that use stop-motion. Why do Americans seem not to like stop-motion c...

Re: How do you feel about Shinji ending up with Mari?

Gonna be blunt. Didn’t like it. At all. The last two movies really teased the possibility that Asuka and Mari might become an item, and there was even some dialogue in the fourth movie that hinted at it. I’ve seen them portrayed as lovers in god-knows-how-many fanfics, and the subtext for it in the ...

Re: What are you watching right now? (tv series + see OP!)

So, Rick and Morty 's most recent episode is titled ""Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion". From the title, you would think it's an Evangelion parody, but it's actually more of a Voltron parody. 80s Voltron , that is, not Legendary Defender . I don't know whether this is because the writers...

Mad God-- Phil Tippett's Stop Motion Magnum Opus

Even if you don't know who Phil Tippett is, you're doubtlessly familiar with his work. He's the guy responsible for the creature designs and stop-motion sequences in Return of the Jedi, Starship Troopers, RoboCop, Willow, and Jurassic Park. But for the past 30 years, he's been working on this person...

Re: Superhero/Comic Based Films & Tv - Vol.2

I did, on my sister's Disney+ account. I thought it was interesting, though as usual for Marvel shows these days it doesn't go quite as far as it could with its most intriguing ideas. One thing I did like about it was the way the TVA seemed to be sort of a metaphor for Disney itself, complete with a...

My guess is they did it as a sort of apology for the long wait for 3.0+1.0, especially the last-minute delays due to the pandemic.

The picture of Ritsuko and Maya is obviously not canon. Everyone knows Akagi-san is cat person!
