It is not, no.
There's some things in the early drafts that the Curso of Eva has very clearly evolved out of, but nothing of the sort was included in the final product.

Re: Possible New SEGA Evangelion Game
That is quite interesting indeed. The last handful of tie-ins were... middling at the best of times, so here's hoping that this will have a bit more substance

Re: The Last Train Station Scene
I see your argument, but at the same time, I also don't see much significance in these particular changes to the outfits; what likely happened here is that the shots through the train windows were done in a different pass than the rest of the scene, and either something changed in the settei that we...

Lol. Good eye for detail! That's quite an amount of animation errors there

I think that's a joke about Angelic Layer, although I admittedly do not know much about that one myself

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now
I suppose that's a fair assessment, although I feel that is one of the strengths of the series, that feeling works nicely with the overall theme and setup of massive, multi-layered schemings that only few are in the know of.

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now
Finished Gasaraki in a half-show binge; my verdict is that Patlabor 2 is no longer the best depiction of 21st Century warfare in mecha. It's just... on point. The show is about equal parts really fucking good real robot, high brow political intrigue, and traditional Japanese themed occultism, and it...

Re: Joke about Anno and...
Oh god, that's an arcane one. Many, many moons ago I have heard something to that tune somewhere, but I don't remember who it was about, or if it even was the same joke. Anno did study and work with a good chunk of other big names in the industry early on, so unless it was some form of absurdism (wh...

Re: Breaking the American Mecha Curse
I agree, but I'd argue powered armor isn't part of that category. Powered armor tends to be seen as a natural extension of the character/wearer, akin to an article of clothing or a prosthetic limb, whereas a "combat avatar" (gonna have to snag that phrase for myself) is explicitly a bigge...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now
After bouncing around in search for something I am in the headspace for, I decided that my headspace was currently set for weird and arcane, so I loaded up Gasaraki ; it is weird as all fuck, but a bit under a quarter of the way in, it is good. Preliminary judgement, if you liked Lain but wished it ...

Re: Breaking the American Mecha Curse
one of the most commonly cited is the idea that, in general, it was just "too similar" to domestically-produced works in the same genre. The constant references to Japanese mecha anime and kaiju movies actually worked against it in this respect. that's quite ironic, given that, as far as ...

Re: Breaking the American Mecha Curse
Well, no. There were five proper release games ; one home console, two mobile games that ran for a long time, and two quite thorough browser games (alongside a third that I'm not willing to count as a full game). It also had a board game , a theme park attraction that is still ongoing , four figure ...

Re: Breaking the American Mecha Curse
We got a TV show too, but it was cancelled after two seasons and ended on a cliffhanger. After that, the franchise has more or less died out. ?????????? My brother in christ, it told the story that it wanted to tell. There was no cliffhanger, no cancellation: The plot of the Black was just over, a ...

I'd say Pacific Rim very much does count there. The amount of spinoffs and tie-ins that got definitely clears the bar for being successful

Re: Breaking the American Mecha Curse
I mean 90s Gundam and a few others did do decently well on Toonami; as far as I can tell from my outside perspective, it just seems like a lot of people kind of grew out of it, and after it shifted timslots to a much later and more infrequent one, there was never something that quite had the same ma...

Re: Breaking the American Mecha Curse
I think the main issue is the same that spawns the brand of chronic cynicism that passes for humor in hollywood these days: Things that are in any form whimsical or indulgent in a premise outside of established "acceptable" deviations from Hard And Gritty Reality™ without constantly making...
