What you're interpreting as an eyepatch's elastic band looks like a barely visible random line to me.

That doesn't really look like an eyepatch to me. At best, it's a 50/50 chance between "eyepatch" and "coloring screw-up".

You know, there's always the in medias res approach, where the story starts with a "prologue" that actually takes place well into the story. It can act as a hook to capture the readers' attention, if it's executed right.
