Re: Star Wars Episode II - A New Thread

The fact that they reshot 80% of the Han Solo solo movie does show invested interest, but the fact that they had to reshoot that much of that movie to begin with might also show signs of some lack of management on Kathleen Kennedy's part. I'm not sure why she wasn't on Kevin Feige's level of creativ...

Re: Rebuild is shallow tangent

Eva's perception between the two countries was the main reason why I ended up dipping into NGE for a while, though I may have lingered there too far in order to really benefit the discussion at hand. But, before leaving NGE all together, I'll simply point out that its sexualization of the characters...

Re: Star Wars Episode II - A New Thread

I can't be bothered to have an opinion about the quality Rogue One, despite having seen it more than once. Current Disney Star Wars is more or less white noise to me until it can prove itself otherwise.

Re: Rebuild is shallow tangent

^ Ah, yes, but it doesn't always do it in a way that applies to the commonly held notion of sex appeal. For example, Asuka in the hospital room scene in EoE is sexualized, but the scene itself has absolutely no intended sex appeal. The same thing is true for the scenes between Misato and Shinji in b...

Re: Rebuild is shallow tangent

Well, you negated it in a earlier post. My request for an explanation has since gone unanswered. Also, what are your thoughts on the rest of the post? That might help build the cornerstone for your argument against my assessments.

Re: Rebuild is shallow tangent

In Japan, Eva tends to be as popular as The Matrix or Star Wars. In America, Eva tends to be only slightly more popular then any other low-brow fan service-riddled monstrosity. Sure, both NGE and NTE (and almost any Eva merchandise out there) tends to have elements of sex appeal about them, Eva is n...

Re: The criticism of the otaku, speculation, reality or something else?

From what I could tell, Anno's fall out with otaku coincided with his fall out with the animation industry in 1998 right after he was booted off of Kare Kano . That's when he started working more with live-action filmmaking, like Love & Pop and Ritual . I think Anno was simply upset with the ani...

Re: Rebuild is shallow tangent

I never said that only Americans were into sex appeal. I've only said that the lack of focus on Asuka and Co. in NTE doesn't seem to be as big of a deal-breaker in Japan as it is in the US. Japanese audiences as a whole still seem to enjoy NTE despite it's laser-focus on the character of Shinji Ikar...

Re: Rebuild is shallow tangent

Yes. Overall, most Western audiences seem to enjoy focusing on the attractive female characters (especially the pilots) over Shinji, the actual main character to the show. As a result, most of their insights on these characters tend to be used in mainly fortifying “best girl” arguments. This is also...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

Yeah, that didn't look very good at all. It's really close to release date, though, so it might be one of those things where the DVD release looks better than the theatrical release.

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

To be fair, I had a hard time visualizing this film in my at at all. So, finally seeing it is rather... nice. I dunno. There's so many potentially cool looking elements in the trailer, but they're just all mashed together in a very messy hodge-podge. It doesn't strike me as a visually cohesive aesth...

Re: How Evangelion Gets Away With Being Terrible

^ I think he accidentally forgot to quote part of my post that he was trying to quote: I mean, Sony rebooted their Spider-Man movies a couple times, and I still like the original trilogy. They still sell it on nice, shiny blu-ray discs. It hasn't been replaced. Different things are different, and di...

Re: The criticism of the otaku, speculation, reality or something else?

Hideaki Anno is one of the co-founders of Gainax, a studio that claimed to be "for otaku, by otaku." That much has pretty much been public knowledge, and it was especially highlighted in their production of Otaku no Video in 1985. For a more intimate perspective on Anno's otaku lifestyle o...

Re: The criticism of the otaku, speculation, reality or something else?

Anno is, himself, an otaku. That he pretty much admits in a few interviews. (Also, read his wife's manga "Insufficient Direction," which is all about their married life together.) Anno said in a few interviews that Shinji is his self-insert character. Anno has also stated that the parts of...

Re: How Evangelion Gets Away With Being Terrible

I like how nobody compared the Brendan Fraser Mummy movies to the original 1932 Mummy movie. It allowed both movies to exist on their own terms, with many people even wondering if one could be considered a remake/reboot to the other.

Re: A critical Analysis of ROE

Yeah, it's difficult to perform a critical analysis of a body of work that isn't finished, unless you're simply critiquing the basics of the art of cinema as a whole. (Lindsey Ellis' YouTube series on Transformers, The Whole Plate , is a good example of critically analyzing a body of work that proba...

Re: How Evangelion Gets Away With Being Terrible

As I've stated before, the "streamlined" characters work really well as supporting cast members. Nerv needed that many warm bodies in Eva Jo and Ha in order to operate in such a way that didn't strain the audiences believability. The fact that we also got to see some of the personalities o...

Re: Rebuild is shallow tangent

The whole "NTE takes place in the same space as NGE" argument seems forced and contrived when you consider that NTE takes place in a space where the oceans are red, the Key of Nebuchadnezzar is a thing, and there are no less that 4 Adam running amok. None of this was true in the space NGE ...
