Re: What is the significance of spilled drink shot in Evangelion 1.0?

Facetiously speaking, its Freudian. It's always Freudian. The straw in the hole suggests that both parties want insertion. Badly. (That's my Matt Greenfield impression. Like it?) Honestly, though, anime (especially Evangelion) has a tradition of cutting to static shots while action is implied to be ...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

^ So, Evangelion uses too many English words "because it sounds cool" for us foreigners to conclusively determine whether or not certain English words to be considered "for the west" simply because it's printed on-screen as a title rather than spoken out-loud in character dialogu...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

I think that the Netflix views Eva will get (and the social media buzz surrounding it with first-time viewers) will either spur Funi to cough up the dough Khara's been asking, or for Khara to compromise in their asking price. But I feel that Khara's compromising isn't the more likely result. I mean,...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

^ lol! Being a "Hard Subber" would mean arguing just for the Japanese language tracks with subs and no English dub of any kind for Netflix, which I don't think anyone is actually supporting a stance like that here. Even as someone who prefers subs to dubs in most all cases (certain Godzill...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

^ From everything I've gathered so far, Khara didn't sign away international disc licenses of NGE in this Netflix streaming deal. If Khara still doesn't provide international Blu-ray/DVD of the show in the near future, it's based on their own business decisions, not Netflix's.

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

Just so long as the new dub is good, I really don't care. I'm not even gonna watch it, but I still think it's important that Eva is presented as pristinely as possible to all potential audiences. Also, I agree with robersora on the technical quality of the English dub. It's more than just a replacem...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

@ Joseki and xwait , another issue with localization, especially those of names and phrases used in Japanese science-ficion, is that the Japanese studio often insists that the localizer of the anime use specific words regardless of how much sense they make in the localizer's language. During ADV's ...

Watanabe said that earlier this year during a Q&A panel at the Animazement convention in Raleigh, NC. I’m not sure if/how they archive that stuff.

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

^ It’ll be interesting to see how Netflix deals with the extended episodes versus the originally aired episodes. Not that I have anything to base is on, but I would think they would go to the extended episodes over and see originally aired episodes. I mean, that is where you get some of the more ext...

Re: Cowboy Bebop

Watanabe has been know to cuss out American producers for projects he's been commissioned to work on himself. When the producers for Blade Runner 2049 told him that he couldn't bring in his own score composer for his animated short film, Shinichiro shouted "shut your fucking mouth" in Engl...

The series lost what little interest I had when Optimus Prime died in 2formers and I didn't care at all about it.

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

I forgot about the translation issues Khara had with Funimation’s Eva Q. It seems consistently true with both English dubbing companies that every time Kaworu and Shinji get together and a giant Impact occurs, the translations also go get trashed.

HALLOWED EXPLETIVE!!! I mean, uh.... *ahem* It's not that I actually care about the dub or anything! Baka! :asuka_geh: Seriously, though. If that's true, I really wasn't expecting that. Not in the slightest. I was just thinking it'd get new subs and it be on its way out the door. Assuming that this...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

@GendosPapa , it’s not so much that I want Netflix to do a new dub for Eva, I just don’t want them to use the old dub for EoE. That would be a terrible disaster simply because of its translational inaccuracies. As for the subs, it’s almost guaranteed that we’ll get a new one that’s accurate. (You k...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

As far as producing a new dub goes....I think it's very unlikely. I don't think there has ever been an old anime property that Netflix streamed that ever had a new dub produced solely for that platform where one already existed. I dunno, man. This is a weird one because I think this is the first ti...

Re: Evangelion 3.0+1.0: 2020

No one is as far as I know. In fact, I think this is the first time Netflix licensed an anime that fell out of print, so I really don't know how they're gonna navigate this. All of their other anime titles are either in print by other distributors (Fullmetal Alchemist, Gurren Lagann, etc. have US di...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

For all of ADV's faults, their subs/dubs ended up being translationally accurate. (I'll have to check, but I think they might have even fixed the "Brain Damage" line in their later releases. I at least remember them addressing that issue in their audio commentary for the episode.) But, yea...

Re: [NEWS] Neon Genesis Evangelion coming to Netflix Spring 2019

Come to think of it, I'm kinda hoping that they do a new sub/dub track at least for D&R and EoE. The mistranslations and factual errors in the Manga Ent. version is confusing at best and embarrassing at worst. Otherwise, I wouldn't care what they did. (Especially with the dub.) But we don't need...
