Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Currently watching Mawaru Penguindrum with some friends in preparation for Witch from Mercury; it is a wild ride so far and I am fully on board with it. It tickles my brain knots the same way that trying to predict what would happen in Shin did before its release. Spoiler: It's a washing machine. :...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

As for UC as a whole - I think that the people who insist on a rigid front to back watchorder are at best high on their own fumes of how great and meaningful to everything the overarching narrative is when really everything you need to know about earlier entries is explained approppriately well whe...

Let me amend this. Elpoe Ple, Ple 2, Marida Cruz, and the other Ple clones.

They need to be taken out to an amusement park (preferably free of Gundam statues, though), and fed a lot of ice cream.

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

Gundam Unicorn Great animation, good plot, likeable characters, villains a bit one-dimensional (there are better Char clones out there). Marida Cruz needs a hug. Finally, I need to know whether Banagher Links and Audrey Burne have children, and what they're like :nyao: Does crossbreeding Newtypes r...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Shin Sakura Taisen The Animation (Funimation Bluray) I long put off buying this because I was afraid it would not be up to par with the original and because it was kinda expensive around here (70 Euro for 12 episodes... :cringe: ). I was quite pleasantly surprised, although the plot could have been...

It is available on a popular free video site. Apart from the mechas, it has a very cookie-cutter plot (it's no Patlabor).

The book of Eli - which is a post-apocalyptic action movie about the Bible, and a nice example about how to make an engaging religious propaganda movie without being heavy-handed.

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

It is one of several OVA's that have a bit of a reputation despite having a very cookie cutter plot full of stereotypes. That has something to do with when it was made, where the plot devices used were fairly new. Madox also had some very nice and very detailed garage kits, in a time where garage ki...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

Watched: Gundam 0083 OVA and movie (Bluray) : This was my first time watching the OVA, and boy did they cut a lot to make the movie (also, the movie version I have on DVD is a different one than the one included in the Bluray). It does not really change my opinion of the series though: Great mecha d...

Re: Anime you loved but now hate(and other ways your tastes changed)

There are some fanservice-heavy series that I cringe about having liked in the past (Love Hina, Gunsmith Cats, etc.). Cookie-cutter plot fantasy series also tend to bore me. Plot and a detailed setting are pretty important to me, although specific types of fanservice still work (e.g. traditional clo...

A little known oldie: Super High Speed Galvion (1984). Someone uploaded all 22 episodes with subtitles on Youtube back in May, and I had wanted to watch it for a long time (just not in raw Japanese). This is the last show sponsored by classic Japanese toy maker Takatoku (better known for Macross and...

Re: FML general thread [8]

How many people in IT does it take to screw in a light bulb (read: resolve a behavioral problem that results in repeatedly missing deadlines)? Current answer: - 1 to come up with a solution that does not address that problem at all. - 1 to hire someone who will help sort out the situation. - 1 who i...

Re: What manga are you reading right now?

I just finished reading Bloom into You. The last volume is quite ero in some chapters, but well done (the author is female and it shows; male authors tend to go too fast into the sexytimes). I was quite amused by two things: that Yu is the more forward one when it comes to the really intimate bits (...

With the first 10 episodes of 1997 Berserk covered, I am having a hard time trying to decide whether Princess Charlotte is either easy to manipulate or just plain dumb. Well, she is a very sheltered and naive young girl. Also, Griffith' charisma is rather otherworldy, to show that he stands above t...

Re: Retro anime or games with dark, unsettling vibes?

Lol it always did feel weird having Disney be the US distributor for Ghibli movies before GKids took over. Looking into Wicked City, yeah I'll give it a try. I thought it was a game and didn't even look it up. Since I'll be able to skim over the more disturbing sex stuff, it shouldn't be too bad. I...
