The Three Stooges (translation question)

The ADV dub has Asuka refer to Shinji, Toji, and Kensuke collectively as "The Three Stooges." In the Netflix dub, she says "Idiot Trio," removing the pop culture reference. What was the phrase in the original? Was it a pop culture reference?

Re: [Game] Neon Genesis Evangelion 2: Another Cases

I linked to the patch files on this very page of the thread. Whatever's there is what you get. Thanks/sorry. I only did a Google search and looked at the first page, didn't look at this page. I did the math awhile back to see how much it would cost to pay someone to translate an anime, but I have n...

Re: [Game] Neon Genesis Evangelion 2: Another Cases

I know that a patch doesn't exist, but is there a decent enough translated script online that I could refer to the script as I was playing?

The purpose of Evangelion was to sell music?

"He’s also given the greenlight to make a new series, set up to sell music merchandising. Anno wants to explore a theme of ‘not running away’."

What's this about?

If Kaworu is coming back, then he damn better be the antagonist.

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

the people who were experiencing it fresh were going to binge it, engage with it for the moment, argue about small nuances and then move on to the next "big deal". I don't see how that follows. People before saw Evangelion through various means and fell in love with it. I don't see why pe...

Re: [Game] Neon Genesis Evangelion 2: Another Cases

I'm surprised that Gainax/Khara/whoever doesn't see potential for profit in releasing this game to English-speaking audiences, or other Eva games for that matter. They're releasing the first of the ANIMA novels in English later this year, and it's hard for me to imagine that an Evangelion novel woul...

What will the Western release be like? (Speculation)

From what I've seen, niche movies like this (in America) get either A. A road show where it shows in different cities during different weeks. B. A normal limited release where it opens in a few hundred theaters on the same day or C. A simulcast for only one or two showings at potentially thousands o...

It's not death. It's a glorious rebirth, for everyone! And that includes Shinji.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm biased because of my attachment to the old dub, so take what I say with a grain of salt: Spike's performance in EoE was phenomenal, whereas Casey's performance is just fine. It's not bad, or even mediocre. I have no problems with it (aside from the unconvincing screaming). It just didn't blow me...

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

My long-held interpretation of End of Evangelion may have just been destroyed by the change of a single line. I saw the kitchen scene in pre-Instrumentality as Rei placing Shinji's soul together with Asuka's, with no AT field, so Shinji could see how she really felt before making a decision as to wh...

Why was Shinji separated from Unit 01? (Episode 20)

Shinji's experience in the Eva is a proto-Instrumentality, but we don't see him decide explicitly that he wants to live in the real world. All I'm certain of is the birthing metaphor when he's spat out. My headcanon is that it was an accidental, like waking up from a dream.

Re: The New Kids Are Weird

Evangelion hasn't helped me hate myself less or get along better with others, but it has made me feel much less alone. That is of no small significance. I'd go so far as to say that I now understand the desire to feel represented in media, because I feel represented by this show.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I am 16 episodes in now. The new Rei feels like a totally different character. I'm used to perceiving her as completely emotionless above a subconscious level. Here, she's quiet, but still very emotional. She's even, dare I say it, cute . I've always thought of her as more creepy than cute. I wonder...

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

I'm not because it looks regressive rather than progressive and the rumour that studio Khara were behind it only adds to the problem as Evangelion is loved by a lot of people because it questions gender roles, sex, sexuality and you can read in to underlying themes for LGBT in to it so for this to ...

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm on episode 9. Asuka's line delivery is significantly less obnoxious in this dub than in the previous dub and, according to my extremely limited ability to understand foreign vocal intonation, the original Japanese audio. This makes Kensuke and Tojis' complaints about her come off as unnecessary,...

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

I have a friend who goes on Something Awful, and he shared with me a post that explains why the translation is so literal.

I intuit that maybe the reason the old dub wasn't included on Netflix is that it didn't adhere to Khara's new translation.
