Re: Eva VHS English subtitles?

In addition to the corrected subtitles, there is a Corrections spreadsheet included in the download. You can use this to manually replace the corrected subtitles with the original uncorrected subtitles. However, even if you do this, you probably won't be able to restore 100% of ADV's typos. While yo...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

Great stuff, Pluto. Thanks for your insight! In regards to those of you who prefer literal translations because you perceive that approach as being the most accurate, one thing I'd like to point out is that if you always took this approach in a translation from Japanese to English, you are sure to e...

Re: Accurate End of Evangelion subtitles

If you use my set, you can use Aegisub to isolate most of the subs you're talking about, because they'll have a unique designation under the Effects column. You'll have to weed out instances of simultaneous or overlapping dialog, but it'll be much less tedious than sifting through everything. You ca...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

We've actually got a visual and thematic list of that sort of thing on the wiki page below - https://wiki.evageeks.org/Tributes_to_Other_Fiction_in_Neon_Genesis_Evangelion#2001:_A_Space_Odyssey And there's a separate page for the Andromeda Strain thematic similarities, which are actually pretty dar...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

Even I've been wondering if it's supposed to be "First of the Children", "Second of the Children" and so forth, as a possible oblique reference to Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End. Childhood's End features an ending very similar to Instrumentality in Evangelion (although not q...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

"Third Child" sounds far better than "Third Children", of course, but the latter is the canonical term. Unless it's proven that the canonical term was based on a grammatical error and not a deliberate creation, we don't have any grounds to change it. I think it's more complicate...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

Glad you're enjoying it! The DC episodes are not included, as they were never officially released on VHS, but there's a possibility I'll do them at some point. More on that here: It would be a companion project, so the format and look of the subtitles would be identical. To answer your question dire...

Re: The End of Evangelion: Fansub Amalgamation

Hey, no worries—the thread would have been reignited for the next update anyway. I haven't done the DCs, but if you want to incite their completion, you're doing the right thing by posting because that allows me to gauge interest levels. And I'm happy to hear you're enjoying these subs! :ting:

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

Thank you for this! I only ever watch the dubbed versions, but on the DVDs the subtitles are always phrased very differently to the dialogue which messes up my focus. So glad this has been done! Are episodes 21-24 the extended version? Do you have your subtitles in .ass format, please? I'm not sure...

I just remembered that there's also English VO for "Fourth Children" (a little over 10 minutes into episode 18).

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

I did some cursory research on how other anime number their episodes and the standard appears to be Arabic numerals, so the use of archaic kanji is definitely distinctive. Is it distinctive for non-archaic kanji to be used for numbers in episode titles? Or was it distinctive, back in the mid 1990s?

Re: Apostles?

If we're meant to think that the use of "children" is an intentional part of the narrative, isn't it strange that in a story with so many secrets, outright lies, and massive coverups, that Nerv would just go and hang that "children" title out there like that? The whole scandal wi...

Re: Value of the various subtitle translations

What I'm still fuzzy on is what are the translation differences if any between the Perfect Collection generation of releases and the Platinum Collection. Which do you value more: emotional impact or comprehension? For the deepest emotional impact, try the VHS translation. For superior comprehension...

I've uploaded some screenshots of the fonts I'm trying to mimic in my subtitles. If anyone can find fonts that are a closer match than the ones I'm using, please let me know. https://drive.google.com/open?id=19RT5drlOshXolT_2jfcbmn9utgAxfmSX Currently I'm using Helvetica Neue 75 Bold for the dialog ...

Re: Evangelion References and Homages

The film Battle Royale (released 2000) begins with the same piece of music used in the trailers (or TV spots) for Death and Rebirth: Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi. Then, later in the film, Air by Johann Sebastian Bach is used, which of course also plays in The End of Evangelion. SPOILER: As wit...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

How about VOBSUB subtitles for the already-processed AVI files? I did encounter some DVDs with fade-in/out in the subtitles. This contradicts what I know about SUP files. But if you can find a way to prove you're right, I would be extremely interested. However, I think you should add in options for...

Re: The End of Evangelion: Fansub Amalgamation

It's really cool that you're trying to help make this project better—but since you aren't using actual screenshots, you're comparing what people would see (your full-screen overlays) against something they would never realistically see (my subtitles without video). Since my subtitles are designed ar...

Re: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Digitally Re-Created VHS Subtitles

I would suggest doing a quick update or an optional extra download for people who have the remastered Collection 0:1 if you ever put out your update for the subtitles before you get your hands on the remastered Collection 0:1. I'm with you: doing a variation for the remastered release is something ...
