Re: [Literature] Currently Reading (discussion)

Currently re-reading through Michael Crichton's works. I had occasion to be on a plane and picked up Jurassic Park and the Lost World, and gobbled up Sphere the night I got back from my trip. I find Sphere is the deepest and most complex of his books and is much more subtle and difficult to pick ap...

Re: What "Neon Genesis Evangelion" literally means.

It is easy to skip over the opening verse of Mark’s Gospel: “The beginning of the good news [evangelion] of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” But if Mark is (as is widely thought) the first Gospel writer, this is an extraordinary sentence. For it is Mark who chooses the word “evangelion” to describ...

Re: If you could be any Eva character who would you be?

Kaji, easily, because he's a much needed father figure to Shinji and someone whom Asuka actually listens to. Therefore, he's in the best position out of all the cast to be able to exert some positive influence over the children and care for them. Plus, he's also in a good position to help Misato out...

Re: Star Trek

I'm very okay with this. Tarantino is a fantastic writer and a Trekkie (he put the "Revenge is a dish best served cold" Klingon proverb in front of Kill Bill) and I'm sure whatever story ideas he has up his sleeve will be good things to build off of. I agree with GP that the likelihood of ...

Re: Why didn't Mari and Sakura blame Shinji for NTI?

That touched Eva fans, but it must have driven away several investors, especially after saying that Anime will end. He backpedaled on that last statement and must have regretted the other claims because he should know that not many people like to fund and work with a bipolar diva. I'm almost positi...

Re: [Film] The Trailers & Upcoming Films Thread

Good on Ridley Scott. Spacey's casting, allegations aside, was dumb anyway and the makeup looked stupid. Much better to actually cast someone in the appropriate age range. Plummer's a legendary actor in his own right, so the film will no doubt be better off for it. I would be remiss in any conversat...

It works for me, but it might not for you because you are not in the United States. The website automatically assesses your location so as to identify who your representatives in Congress are so that they can supply you with their office numbers. 5 Calls is a great resource to use, as it gives you direct numbers to Pai's office as well as a number of secondary contacts and a script you can read from when you call.

Re: Introduction, Toxicity of AsuShin and other things

If anything, aside from him succumbing to his more primal urges, I think it was more him wanting to also convince himself that he's such an awful person, that this is justification enough to commit suicide, and end the pain, which is why he's pretty much mentally comatose through the first half of ...

Re: Introduction, Toxicity of AsuShin and other things

As I said before, I felt very related to Shinji during the series, but in EoE I just lost that sincere empathy I had for him. Even if he’s 14 years old, I don’t think what he did was excusable at all, and even less likable . I’m glad he did have the decency to admit he was fucked up , but still, th...

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion Trilogy (1-3): North American Theatrical Release Petition

Your enthusiasm is nice, but I'm pretty sure Funimation released all 3 films theatrically already, albeit at different times. Besides, they've already released all 3 films on DVD. Why would they spend all that money on a theatrical exhibition so soon after they've already been shown in theaters less...

Re: Introduction, Toxicity of AsuShin and other things

They're both fucked-up kids because of horrible childhoods and neglect from parental figures. Shinji deals with it by retreating inside himself. Asuka deals with it by externally trying to overcompensate. If you can bring yourself to feel sympathy for Asuka despite all of her flaws, then you are per...

Because some people are lacking a basic human feeling called empathy. Even Kaworu was empathetic of Shinji's situation...and he's not even human!

Re: [Film] James Cameron's Avatar

Avatar, for all the money it made, is far and away Cameron's weakest film IMO. I saw it twice in theaters and liked it, but it's had next to no rewatch value for me after the fact. Aside from the groundbreaking CGI work, the plot and characters are too derivative to be interesting. Titanic, while it...

Re: [Film] Alita: Battle Angel

Literally the only reason I have any faith in this project whatsoever is that Cameron's duties as a writer/producer. Say what you will about him being an asshole, but he knows how to make a product that is appealing enough to make tons of cash. You'd have to believe he's been steering Robby Rod towa...
