Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

I was joking; sci-fi in general relies on absurd timescales to make things even conceivably possible. In Eva the rebuilding of Tokyo 2 and 3 and the development of the Evas almost from scratch all in 14 years? No more realistic than the population timescale in FranXX.

Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

I think that could be answered by the fact they have a large library at their disposal. Well, that only goes so far in learning to have feelings; reading is not a good way to acquire socialisation. Also, the mere fact of the apparently uncensored library is an anomaly when it seems that they are in...

Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

The future history compresses way too much into the next 20 years. Oh, right, like a certain Neon Genesis Evangelion did when it was first aired. A little flexibility in dates is a small thing to ask. But yes - the Eva parallels were beyond blatant (and more damaging to the show's credibility than ...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Piano no Mori , episode 8 They're clearly going for an extended treatment of the main part of the manga (covering the Chopin Piano Competition). I had already thought this to some extent because they have been going a little faster than necessary so far - but this week they've skipped a whole volum...

Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

Also the whole wedding stuff felt pretty forced and cheesy. I'm inclined to agree. Although it gives some justification for their behaviour in 19, I feel they could have found something a bit better. The wedding fitted into my long-running complaint that the children keep on suddenly knowing too mu...

It's very short on Rebuild-related works; jcmoorehead's for instance: Hand Cannot Erase and You Must (Not) Run Away.

Re: Shinji Clenching His Fist Question

I don't know if you feel this counts, but in EoE he clenches his fists as he kicks down his sandcastle. If not yet a tic, it's still a movement that could develop into one.

Re: FML general thread [8]

Not exactly FML, but sad story for me. Some of you will recall that my son Nic is a concert pianist of considerable repute. His talent became apparent with the remarkable development of his playing from start to the highest level of school exam (what we call "Grade 8" in the UK) in barely ...

Re: Taking in Zeruel's S^2 Organ caused Unit 01 to physically change

I'm sort of hesitant to use the word "vestigial" in this particular context. This led me to check up on my knowledge of the human appendix, and I found (somewhat to my surprise) that research since the time I learnt about it has pointed at the possibility of it having genuine functions. I...

We have no idea how little value the parts we don't understand may have; they may simply do things in ways we haven't yet twigged.

Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

Sure, this is far more blatant - but the wiping of Hiro's memory was not restricted to his AWOL period - his promise with Mitsuru being the key thing there. But again, I guess that could go unnoticed until the time came when his no longer remembering it became apparent (and then only Mitsuru would b...

Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

And someone needs to ship APE an executive summary of The Evil Overlord's Handbook , or at least a clue or two -- there's no point mind-wiping someone then putting them back amongst people who will inevitably try filling in their blanks They hadn't had a problem doing that with Hiro - it was only t...

Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

I had the opportunity this week to rewatch Darling in the FranXX in binge mode. I found that the pacing of the show worked better knowing more of where it was heading, which I suppose points to a flaw in its presentation; but it's not one I'm too concerned about - Evangelion comes over in somewhat t...

Re: Internet toxicity (Social media, fandom shipping, etc)

I am generally against censorship of thought. But often swearing is nothing to do with thought, and I am happy to censor it if it breaks the stated rules. In particular, I require civility in a forum - and if it happens to be the proponents of a particular point of view who uniformly fail to meet th...
