I see it as an attempt to make her appear normal. If she goes to school she appears to be an actual 14 year old girl, not a lab experiment.

It all depends what you mean by spineless. I wouldn't necessarily consider Shinji "spineless" because he at least has the balls to pilot an eva (although reluctantly.) I don't really like the character type because they are usually generic just seem to be there for the purp...

It's possible that it could be mari or at least someone related to mari because of the way she refers to gendo as gendo-kun. Also when she says to Rei "Your original was a lot friendlier" implying that she knew Yui.
