Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Is New Game! any good? The art seems solid & I like stories about a workplace environment but from the clips I've seen I'm getting the vibe that: A) There isn't much focus on the actual work. B) It's another anime show that exists in a strange post-apocalyptic utopia where all men have died off...

Re: Did Evangelion really run out of budget?

esselfortium , CGI would have been even more expensive and time consuming in 1995 than it is now. I honestly don't think Ramiel was conceived to behave in any differently than what was in the show. Oh god, haha. I was just speaking generally since it was brought up in the thread here. 3D CGI in a 1...

Re: Did Evangelion really run out of budget?

The myth of "budget" in anime is a meme that needs to die. No one at Gainax said "oh, well, we ran out of money, guess our animators are just going to sit on their thumbs now and wait for the next project" during Evangelion's production. They worked their tails off to get those e...

That sounds incredibly cool and interesting.

Yeah, I'm really hoping it gets adapted into an anime at some point!

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

The story will end with Zoku-owarimonogatari , though we've already had the postscript in the form of Hanamonogatari . All the subsequent novels (and the various short stories in various places) are further episodes within the story already told to its end, so while they would be good to have, they...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

I loved Konosuba season 2. Found it a lot better and more consistently funny than season 1 was, which had some great moments but overall I was somewhat lukewarm on.

(Also, both Madoka endings are unparalleled masterpieces!)

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions

I'm probably going to get some flak for this, but I never liked The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya very much. For me, it's the definition of a show that doesn't age well. Not only is the main character kind of a jerk, but pretty much everything in it is a reference to slice-of-life anime cliches tha...

Gatchaman Crowds and Insight are both fantastic and more people need to see them. In addition to just being fun as heck, they feel even more relevant and eerily prescient now than they did a few years ago.

Re: Cowboy Bebop

As far as anime/movie music goes, that's pretty accurate. The main difference between those scores and Cowboy Bebop is that, while Kanno and Watanabe referenced other music while collaborating for their projects, they don't make "safe" or "predictable" choices. They actively mak...

Re: Cowboy Bebop

"Plagiarized from" or "Inspired by," either one would fit the bill at this point. The similarities are there, but it's not to the point where you can really accuse her of lifting every beat, melody, and harmony progression in order to create songs nearly indistinguishable from o...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Scum's Wish [end]: Holy fucking shit, that's about the most grownup ending to a love story I've ever seen. And goddamn, I'm not even being hyperbolic there. Hey, we can't get our true loves, so let's be fuck buddies! Great, let's do that! Okay, we should at least try to get our true lov...

Yeah, I was really expecting Scum's Wish to end in tears and suffering -- the premise seemed tailor-made for a depressing ending. I think I would've still enjoyed the show a lot either way, but that it's taken a very different path has been very refreshing and rewarding to watch.

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Anyone else watching Kuzu no Honkai ? I've never really gotten into "shoujo" stuff before (I guess Ikuhara's stuff is kind of derived from that general aesthetic), but Kuzo no Honkai is something else. The direction is really pleasant, and the characters are fascinating and horrifying bec...

Re: Which anime of today will be considered future classics?

Madoka isn't a deconstruction, though, and it really isn't reliant on genre knowledge at all. Even my dad got a lot out of it and he's seen, like, three anime. It's beloved for being a tightly-crafted emotional story paired with some killer music and visual design. But maybe that's just a general fa...

That doesn't make any sense as something to tell Shinji, unless she expects him to live a few million/billion years to experience any of that.

Re: Which anime of today will be considered future classics?

It only ends up going nowhere if the intention is to reach a definitive answer. I can't say that was my intent by any stretch. The most definitive answer we can get, from the very person whose intent was in question, has already been posted. Nothing is to be gained here by distrusting testimony fro...

Re: Which anime of today will be considered future classics?

Does anyone actually believe this? I mean apart from you, essel. 2ch's reaction when this "came out" was varying levels of "yeah of course that's what the studio guys are saying" and it makes sense as the business line if the stress here is continuity. But I'd already ended this...

Re: Which anime of today will be considered future classics?

Fixed that for you. Seriously. EoE was Anno venting his depression by taking a gigantic shit on the characters, with everyone behaving like a brain-damaged moron, and culminating in one of the most pathetically petty and spiteful endings ever, and Rebellion WOULD have been great were it not for the...
