Re: Should Asuka die in the final film?

Q: Should Asuka die in the Final Film? A: If it becomes relevant in the story of the Final film for her to do so then yes. Otherwise, it's impossible to tell at this point in time. Knowing Anno, if any character deaths become integral to his story, he'll most likely remove any ounce of schadenfreud...

Re: Honda: 3.0+1.0 is being made right now

A month? That's pretty low for a full-time job. Though, I really don't know if "5th Animator" is a full-time job, or even what it entails, especially since it's already listed as an "outsourced" job.

I can't find the compensation listings anywhere. Maybe I'm missing them. Is it listed as an hourly payment or as a per-drawing payment?

Yes. This is the high watermark for modern visual effects in Japan. I couldn't help but be impressed by Toho.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)

During Operation Yashiori Godzilla is stiff as a board. (I can accomplish more dynamic movements using SFM) Godzilla being stiff as a board when he's hibernating due to lack of energy is less of a flaw and more of the whole point. I can't think of very many reptiles or lizards who are quite active ...

It seems to bookend the also EoE exclusive hospital scene nicely.

Re: Anno statements about End of Evangelion

^ I also wonder if the Post-3I beach scene in EoE wouldn't have originally played to be so static. It seems like a stark contrast to the energy present in EoTV's ending.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)

The CGI of Babyzilla is fine. Everything moves great, the weight distribution is dramatic yet believable, the texturing is fine, the rendering is good, the compositing is seemless, and the interaction between it and the miniatures and the live-action material is awesome. The design of Babyzilla seem...

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions

^ Yeah, I certainly wasn't aware of the cultural environment that Akira was responding to when I first saw it. The only thing that stuck out was the eye-popping animation, grotesque mutation designs, and, as stated above, the "unconventional narrative flow." Now that I know more about mode...

Getting off the Anno Train has been an option all along. You don't need Eva to dictate when you do that.

Re: Star Wars

Neat teaser. I like the whole "Jedi must end" vibe from Skywalker. It fits with my notions of the existence of either Sith or Jedi disrupting the balance between the Light and Dark sides of the Force.

Re: Shin Gojira (a.k.a. Godzilla Resurgence)

It has pretty much every single one of the important Japanese screening events on Disc 2, and Disc 3 is dense with Making-Of material.

Re: Does the second part of Thanatos ever play?

A version of it appears in The End of Evangelion under the track title "Substitute Invasion," which is slightly different from the version used elsewhere while still having the same tune and melodies and such. And I do believe that the second half of that version of the song finally plays ...

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions

The complains lobbied against Akira are very interesting. Akira was the first movie that got me to actually appreciate anime when I first saw as a 19-20-ish year old film student back it in 2007. Prior to that my only exposure to actual anime TV episodes or movies were the animated commercials for A...

Re: Rick and Morty

I was talking with a friend who felt that the way The Rickshank Redemption handled the divorce of Beth and Jerry was done poorly, even if he felt it was time for it to come eventually. I could see where he came from, but considering how much the show subverts expectations, I'd wait to see how it pl...

He was either referring to a pair of Ritsukos, or Rituko's pair.

I'm more interested in Ritsuko's pear, but I sorta wince at the idea of Ritsuko's pare.

It's a thin premise that wasn't really palatable to me until it was cut down to Dragonball Z Kai. And even then I don't think I ever finished it.

Re: Anno apologizes for 4th film delay

Animation backgrounds rarely adhere to any given aspect ratio of the final product. I've had the opportunity to see animation cels with backgrounds to Gunbuster, and some of the shots in the sleep-over scene were all drawn using a wide landscape aspect ratio so the 4:3 "camera" could pan b...

Re: Hollywood's "Ghost in the Shell"

I honestly don't think it would have made a difference, even with an Asian cast or a script rewrite expunging the racial tone-deafness. The marketing didn't do enough to pull in a mass audience, and the cleverness of the movie itself wasn't good enough to elicit positive word-of-mouth, not even from...
