Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

Yeah, the whole “Cinematic Universe” is really all just lightning in a bottle captures by Marvel. I honestly expect the MCU to also diminish in returns relatively shortly. (Unless Disney can keep costs down.) Not everything can be 10+ movies of connective tissue. Everything from the DCEU to the Mons...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

@ Chuckman, Yeah, I know the Japanese themes will never show up in an American Godzilla movie. It just feels weird to me to have these tropes perform in a reverse manner is all. It's not a complaint, per se (not once did it prevent me from enjoying the movie), it's just an observati...

Re: Superhero/Comic Based Films & Tv - Vol.2

Swamp Thing could be made on $13 million, wtf is going on with these productions? Especially for these subscription exclusive titles, you don’t want to depend on old newspaper business models in order to recoup high business expenses.

Re: Shin Eva - Official Social Media

Sagisu lives in Paris, France these days, so maybe he just goes to Abbey Road Studios for all of his musical production needs, and not just the Eva ones? Either way, its close enough to a 2020 release date where finalized Eva-related music score of some kinds needs to be happening soon.

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

So, GKotM19 did come out on top in the box office in the first weekend, both domestically in the States and internationally, but with a huge caveat. The weekend as a whole favored GKotM, but day-by-day, Aladdin ended up taking over again by Saturday. This seems to be the usual for Warner Brother, wh...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

Yes, I’ve seen that movie. They did do a good job with that, but Anime Godzilla isn’t in that same visual style, so it was more difficult for me to imagine what his movement would be like.

Seems as though the same was true for the filmmakers, too.

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

It hasn't. Studios only get 50%-60% of the total gross. Also, there isn't a consensus on how much the film cost to produce. Some estimates put it as low as $170 million and as high as $230 million. Which probably doesn't factor in promotion costs either way. That’s not quite right. For the first mo...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

I see a lot of other Godzilla fans having mixed feelings on this one as well, and I can see why. One of the weirdest things that struck me about GKOTM19 is how much American culture changes everything about how Godzilla tropes function in the film’s narrative. I’ll do a more spoiler-riddled, in-dept...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

This movie is the Mad Max Fury Road of Godzilla movies, and that's a fantastic thing. I get the complaints critics have with this one, really I do. But I also get watching Godzilla movies. There's a reason why Toho poured money into this franchise, even in the 60's when things were getting sillier, ...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

I get the sense that this GKotM movie might feel more like a big budget version of a Jun Fukuda Godzilla flick, rather than a big budget version of an Ishiro Honda Godzilla flick.

Is this true? I mean, I’ll enjoy either, but I prefer the latter.

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

Well, even as a Beast From 20,000 Fathoms film, ‘98 Zilla stops and starts one too many times, interrupting it’s own rhythm. There’s nothing the film does seamlessly as it goes from two Godzilla attacks to the baby Zillas in Madison Square Garden, and then back to an extended Godzilla chase scene to...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

Yeah, the American’s approach to nuclear weapons in film does kind of worry me about their attempts at a Godzilla flick. Signs of this were evident even from the Americanization of the original Black & White movie. Dr. Serizawa says in the Americanized 1956 film that he’s worried about his destr...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

My guess is that many western film buffs have a difficult time with media that isn’t somewhere on the Humanist spectrum. While there is an ocean of cinematic sins that Christian films commit, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the biggest disconnects between those films and western film communities i...

Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

I’m seeing it this Saturday. Critics seem to be confusing the monsters for something other than the main cast, which is weird. Godzilla is the longest running film franchise in history, you’d think critics would have gotten the hang of this some 30 years ago, instead of basically asking for an Aveng...

Re: Last Movie You Watched

If there is a distinction between high art and low art, John Wick 3 would join the rest of the movie in the series as high art. It's a good blend of the emotional visceral vibes from the first film with the great world building and plot progression from the second films.

^ Oh, that’s not happening. These episodes were filmed months ago and the producers probably granted picture lock and moved on to other things by now.

Re: [TV] A Game of Thrones

I knew the show was gonna die when I saw Episode 1 of Season 1. Basically the writers would spam cool things just to make the bits of bad writing more bearable to watch. (There was a lot of pointless nudity during the scenes where the writing wasn't the greatest, for example.) And as soon as they ra...

Re: Superhero/Comic Based Films & Tv - Vol.2

Ah, I see.

To be fair, absolutely none of us has followed Robert Patterson's extensive low-budget art-house filmography he's been starring in since the Twilight saga, so I don't know if we really know what the current Robert Patterson is like as an actor.

Re: Superhero/Comic Based Films & Tv - Vol.2

^ Uh, it’s a Matt Reeves movie, not a Chris Nolan movie. Matt Reeves is known for being a part of JJ Abrams’s projects in some way. The Batman (and the new Joker movie) is gonna be one of the first theatrical DC films in a while to not have Nolan anywhere in production at all.

Re: Superhero/Comic Based Films & Tv - Vol.2

Damn, I should stop pitching better movies every time a possible train wreck is announced.

To be fair, I think that the casting of Robert Patterson might actually work. Time will tell, I guess.
