As for what kind of person Asuka is, in all of her incarnations: Someone who kicks people while they are down. period. Not allways this literally, but very consistently. And Skyler is the real villain of Breaking Bad, not the guy who actually kills people and sells meth. Being geeky and emotionally...

I really wish things as concrete as the ending scene of 3.0 where she literally kicks the kid in the head would end the constantly ongoing "Asuka truly loves Shinji" debate. But it won't.... It will never die. If the last scene of EOE didn't kill it nothing will. Dude, people stil...

Will Space Stalin find happiness with one of the lovely bacherlorettes he sent to the gulag? Clearly this is the most important unresolved question thus far.

How is it "irrelevant" that Anno's approach to character is demonstrably untrue to life, in a story ostensibly about the human mind/heart/whatever?

I still think it would've been much ballsier/ more morally coherent if the writers had settled on making Shinji "consciously" aware that he started Third Impact. It feels like they want to do a story about sin, redemption, and responsibility...without actually making Shinji narratively...

We have answered it, dozens of times, by explaining, in no uncertain terms, that "What happens to the world doesn't matter." is not the same as "I want the world to die/end/be hurt. There might be a moral difference between actively seeking out people to run down with your car an...

You know, one question the "Shinji was framed, I tells ya!" camp hasn't even tried to answer is: if Shinji in no way willed Third Impact, why the suggestive placement. of "ASDF screw the world!" line immediately before he, well, screws the world? There's about a billion o...

Finding 3.0 shocking and unfair is like being outraged by the ending of Macbeth. "He was such an enlightened monarch until that asshole Macduff ruined everything!"

So now we're hanging people based on what they subconsciously want? Well it was pretty conscious judging from the "I don't care about the world" line and his earlier traincar monologue. He just didn't know he had the hardware to turn his wistful dreams of genocide into literal...

I'm surprised no one as mentioned Kaworu's assesment of Shinji yet: "Instead of seeking change, you prefer a world of nothingness and brutal abyss." Even though the movie retroactively informs us that Shinji wasn't aware of his surroundings during third impact--it could've ...

I don't think refusing to kill Asuka says much of anything about Shinji's character, considering that literally the next day she is implicitly grouped with "the world" in the "I don't care if they live or die" category. And "I can't just kill someone" so...

Feeling remorse after killing thousands of people doesn't really bump Shinji far up in the sympathy department. Even TV anti heroes like Tony Soprano or Walter White generally aren't shown to be psychopaths in the "clinical" sense of feeling no guilt whatsoever. If 3rd Impact invol...

^ Okay, so you're admitting that Shinji did knowingly bring about 3rd Impact--or at least willed it into happening by not giving two fucks about anyone but himself--but this is forgivable because...reasons. If that isn't the thrust of your argument, I'm not sure what the above post was m...

Because it apparently has to be said, NGE isn't a window into an alternate reality; it's a series of textual artifacts. Since 2.0 itself doesn't exculpate Shinji with respect to 3rd Impact, it's fair enough to call what 3.0 does a "retcon," in the same way that Darth Vader ...

I couldn't agree more. On the other hand, though, the narrative is a wonderful way to discern character, especially with issues as vague as Shinji's hand in 3I. And on that note the narrative's pretty cleavr. Yup, the part where Shinji announces that he'll destroy the world to save ...

Rebuild Shinji is pretty much Walter White from Breaking Bad without the cool goatee or technical savvy. Wouldn't be surprised at this point if he had Aoba prison shanked or blackmailed Toji into building a meth lab with him. Which would all somehow be ostensibly "to save Ayanami."

I don't really get it when fans claim nge is this ultra dark, gritty, nihilistic show. EoE is is dark for the type of genre fiction that it is, sure, but for much of its run nge is basically a children's show. Misato is about as realistic a portrayal of alcoholism as Homer Simpson. Asuka is ...

The real problem with NME isnt the lack of ball-trippy inner monologues-it's Shinji himself. Original flavor Shinji was a character who generally remained sympathetic despite being capable of atrocities, whereas ReShinji appears to have the emotional range of a Vice character in a medieval moral...
