Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Having now watched all of the Robotech component shows, I get the feeling that Southern Cross is the underrated one, likely due to its butt-ugly mecha designs. The robots really do look like Chinese Macross knock-offs, but other than that and its unfulfilling non-ending resulting from an early cance...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Rewatched Your Name , and it's truly a remarkable film that shows how a movie can glide over even large mechanistic plot holes if it has good momentum and fingers the right thematic and emotional chords. Take, for example, Itomori with its ancient meteorite craters: it makes absolutely no sense that...

Re: Oh The Horror!

For those looking for a modern zombie film with as much satirical social commentary bite as Dawn of the Dead, I always recommend the Cuban film Juan of the Dead. It's gutsy to the point of "I can't believe the filmmakers were not arrested for this".

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Dirty Pair The Movie: Make no mistake, Project Eden is an absolute wonder of the sort of 1980s aesthetic that makes the retrowave crowd moist , but much like a number of Dirty Pair OVA offerings, it suffers from an inconsistent tone. Basically, there seems to be two ways of doing Dirty Pair. One is...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Interviews With Monster Girls: Food for thought: this isn't my go-to genre, granted, but I think this show might be the fabled, super-elusive realistic harem anime. It achieves this by tweaking the typical harem asymmetry where there's always a main girl (usually a boring one) and then some harem f...

Re: News [NO POLITICS]

Leviathan-sized video rental stores are being rescued by turning them into nonprofits. Looks like this one won't have any trouble reaching its Kickstarter goal.

Jubei-chan, episode 8: So this hard slapstick show just pulled some deeply moving, extremely serious human drama in an episode where the protagonists are menaced by literal Mickey Mouse ninjas. Goddamn I love anime sometimes.

Re: Commentary: Episode 07

Well, it took longer than expected but it's finally here . Hope the DOS nerdiness won't scare away too many people. The FGC page style makes the page longer than I'd like, but we'll have to live with it. This is a thing of beauty, exactly the sort of addition that makes me feel like the Old Comment...

Thank you so much for fixing this embarrassing mess! The asterisk is meant to mark a footnote, pointing to another asterisk that was in my original comment. So you should put the other asterisk back as well so the connection won't disappear. ****** Edit: some final comments: 080: ADV's old home vide...

Re: Commentary: Episode 07

Which raises a good question: Unless I'm not realizing something important, it looks like the quote in the FGC apparently sprang up from nowhere. Dr. Nick, might you have some other source for it? Looks like it's some kind of fucky chimaira combining the JAE FAQ entry and this mailing list FAQ entr...

Re: Commentary: Episode 07

You're right, ath. Looks like I went all cross-eyed about what the home video status quo is because this such a complex, silly thing, and I'm so very rusty. So let's see if I understand the progression of these name changes correctly: Yebisu (TV original) -> Yebichu (TV altered) -> Yebisu (back to t...

Re: Commentary: Episode 07

Okay, it's been years since I've been even tangentially involved with this stuff, so my apologies for being rusty. It might be because of my rustiness, but I'm a little confused/concerned about this bit by ath: 014 : Oh, and they forgot to fix the Yebichu/Yebisu branding issue in the Video releases,...

Re: News of Anime in Japan

This is licensing news, but Jesus tapdancing Christ. I'm a person who actively seeks out bad anime, and this shitshow still left me aghast. And the cover art is downright devious, making it look like a Trigger show. There are going to be blind buyers who are going to get burned by this.

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Night Raid 1931: It's a good anime if you're like me and suffering from Zipang withdrawal symptoms, but it's also unbalanced in a way that's going to be offputting for a lot of people. That's because its first half is quite a slog and makes the show seem dumber than it actually is. The presence of ...

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions

Why are these companies licensing/dubbing anime that's recent, instead of stuff I've heard of and want to see? Because retro anime is niche business, and the largest profits are obviously in the newer stuff. The best you can do is support the current retro releases, because that way we might get mo...

Re: Last Movie You Watched

Swiss Army Man. You know, parts of this film are eerily similar to Yuasa's Mind Game, just with more Harry-Potter-as-multitool action.
