Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Ghost Sweeper Mikami, eps. 1-19: https://i.imgur.com/Qk8vwOQ.jpg GS Mikami was a big hit back in the 1990s, spawning a whole slew of imitators within the "hot chicks busting ghosts" subgenre, and it's easy to see why: Takashi Shiina is really good at cranking out slightly comedic one-and-...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School: It's pretty ironic that a game series that does anime bullshit so well is so bad as an actual anime. But of course, considering the basic building blocks of the franchise, any attempt at adapting it on television would be a crazy uphill battle, esp...

Yeah, Uprising is largely what you'd expect, a plasticky Chinese cheapie compared to the first film. But I honestly didn't expect them to lift the very final action setpiece from

Re: News of Anime in Japan

So I just finished reading the Ga-Rei manga and I'm going to post something about it at a later date, but a Wikipedia reference led me to this. That is absolute screaming madness. I mean, I guess you could techincally pull off a dinky live-action version of Ga-Rei Zero with a TV superhero budget, bu...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Eureka Seven AO: In short, I don't get why this series is supposed to be this uniquely awful thing, but that's almost certainly due to my policy of not engaging with the in-the-moment seasonal anime fandom (and also being a know garbage eater). Hipsterism perhaps, but it's just a fact of anime that...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Battle Athletes Victory, episodes 1-6: No wonder chaz as a man of wealth and taste likes this show, because it feels like the complete product after the practice run that was the OVA. Considering this franchise is built around a preposterous future sports setting, the OVA was probably too epic for ...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Having now watched all of the Robotech component shows, I get the feeling that Southern Cross is the underrated one, likely due to its butt-ugly mecha designs. The robots really do look like Chinese Macross knock-offs, but other than that and its unfulfilling non-ending resulting from an early cance...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Rewatched Your Name , and it's truly a remarkable film that shows how a movie can glide over even large mechanistic plot holes if it has good momentum and fingers the right thematic and emotional chords. Take, for example, Itomori with its ancient meteorite craters: it makes absolutely no sense that...

Re: Oh The Horror!

For those looking for a modern zombie film with as much satirical social commentary bite as Dawn of the Dead, I always recommend the Cuban film Juan of the Dead. It's gutsy to the point of "I can't believe the filmmakers were not arrested for this".

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Dirty Pair The Movie: Make no mistake, Project Eden is an absolute wonder of the sort of 1980s aesthetic that makes the retrowave crowd moist , but much like a number of Dirty Pair OVA offerings, it suffers from an inconsistent tone. Basically, there seems to be two ways of doing Dirty Pair. One is...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

Interviews With Monster Girls: Food for thought: this isn't my go-to genre, granted, but I think this show might be the fabled, super-elusive realistic harem anime. It achieves this by tweaking the typical harem asymmetry where there's always a main girl (usually a boring one) and then some harem f...

Leviathan-sized video rental stores are being rescued by turning them into nonprofits. Looks like this one won't have any trouble reaching its Kickstarter goal.

Jubei-chan, episode 8: So this hard slapstick show just pulled some deeply moving, extremely serious human drama in an episode where the protagonists are menaced by literal Mickey Mouse ninjas. Goddamn I love anime sometimes.

Well, it took longer than expected but it's finally here . Hope the DOS nerdiness won't scare away too many people. The FGC page style makes the page longer than I'd like, but we'll have to live with it. This is a thing of beauty, exactly the sort of addition that makes me feel like the Old Comment...
