Re: Godzilla & Kaiju General!

Hot take maybe, but I think what contributed to KotM's lukewarm reception was that it kinda fails as a visual spectacle, and this is coming from someone who really wanted to like the movie. I liked many of the thematic things it does, I liked the music, and for what I've heard, the director seems to...

Gyrozetter episode 1: https://i.imgur.com/iaiJHc9.jpg Have you ever watched one of those Tony Seba transportation lectures and thought to yourself "this is pretty cool, but it would be even cooler as a shounen battle anime"? Because if you have, Gyrozetter has you covered. Back in 2012, t...

Re: 2018 Positivity Thread (Good things that happened, you came across, etc.)

Something that's different from last year: I live in the northern armpit of the EU, but even here a steady trickle of electric vehicles has started to appear: Kias, Hyundais, Toyota hybrids, Nissan vans, BMW i3s, and yes, some Teslas as well. It's heartening to see, considering how few models are st...

Coyote Ragtime Show The name may be evocative of Cowboy Bebop , but this series is more like a Chinese bootleg of Outlaw Star . In a distant future humans have colonized the galaxy and powerful mafia families rule the roost, which is probably for the best, considering how both inept and psychotic t...

Re: What manga are you reading right now?

Tokyo ESP (A.K.A. Hajime Segawa's X-Men) Tokyo ESP was Segawa's big follow-up to Ga-Rei , and actually started its serialization while the latter was still ongoing and nearing its finale. Considering this continuous transition, it's pretty amazing how markedly better the character art in Tokyo ESP ...

Dancouga: Blazing Epilogue Not the abject horror show I was led to expect, considering how this four-episode shortie was for the longest time avoided by classic mecha fansubbers; it's just this completely unneeded thing. Shapiro is back, and gets to do very, very little. Not the correct way to use ...

Hitler Rants Parodies closes the circle of meta with a tastefully done, touching tribute. I'm not sure if I expected that.

Social aspect & non-splintered access to canon. It's obviously something that appeals to hardcore film buffs, so it can only really work in an urban area with high enough hipster density.

Galactic Cyclone Bryger: So, yes, it's one of those shows that are famous for their villain, and I must admit that even though the anime as a whole is a depressingly low-rent affair, Khamen Khamen is an intensely cool villain who deserved a better series. As an Egyptian mafia princeling, he's all a...

Ghost Sweeper Mikami: So yeah, it's a really good episodic 1990s supernatural adventure show with not a single shitty episode stinking up the bunch. At 45 episodes, that's pretty amazing consistency. It's also an absolutely heathenous anime that dares to suggest that high school is actually pretty ...

Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich In an unintentional meta way, this is probably one of the edgiest films ever made, in that it's a thematically non-edgy, soft, safe, sanitized Nazisploitation film. The edge loops full circle here, and I doubt anyone would see that coming. I sure didn't. Granted, t...

Re: Eva Misconceptions wiki page?

As for what content should go on it, what immediately comes to my mind: •Is explaining the death threats. (I honestly can't recall if they were actually about TV ending, or Death & Rebirth but I thought it was the latter?) And if memory serves, it was only a handful of messages, right? Weren't ...

M3: The Dark Metal https://i.imgur.com/SjBHOr6.jpg An already-forgotten Satelight show that is one part low-rent Eva clone, one part curse-based J-horror. A fairly inert affair despite its Mari Okada pedigree. Most notable for Natsuiri being an eye-poppingly awful Gendo expy, and the final episode ...

Re: What manga are you reading right now?

Ga-Rei: Hajime Segawa had lots of luck with his breakthrough opus Ga-Rei, as it actually benefited from what I assume must have been executive meddling. Its story is told in four major arcs, but the manga starts from the second arc, and throughout it the first arc is only visited in scattered flash...

Ghost Sweeper Mikami, eps. 1-19: https://i.imgur.com/Qk8vwOQ.jpg GS Mikami was a big hit back in the 1990s, spawning a whole slew of imitators within the "hot chicks busting ghosts" subgenre, and it's easy to see why: Takashi Shiina is really good at cranking out slightly comedic one-and-...
