Re: EoE Final scene explained and connected to EoTV G.W.F Hegel.

EoTV's ending is as triumphant as it gets. EoE's ending is miserable and depressing. Even if you take a positive message away from the ending of EoE, it's hard to argue that it isn't far more downbeat than EoTV's.

Re: EoE Final scene explained and connected to EoTV G.W.F Hegel.

Anno specifically mentions the applause as "a bit weak", and in response to "So we can't think of [the ending] as [Shinji] being saved, or as it being happy." he says "Um, well, there are probably people who see it as a happy ending. For me, personally, it wasn't very happy....

Yes, the second film was a serious project that was going to be written by Anno and everything that they legitmately intended to make. Sore o Nasumono was just Ikuto Yamashita and Seiji Kio tossing ideas around, and was never seriously considered as something to actually make.

Re: EoE Final scene explained and connected to EoTV G.W.F Hegel.

This thread contains most of what I'm talking about, with particular emphasis on this: Anno: But I was speaking to myself. There was a regression back into the self. Thinking back over it , I feel like it was an ending where I intended to push forward but ended up being drawn into this feeling of b...

Re: Rebuilds being a continuation of EoE?

I somehow doubt it's enough of an unlucky number to not use it in the title of a numerical sequel. And that's ignoring the rest of the evidence.

Re: Rebuilds being a continuation of EoE?

The original series spells "Evangelion" as "エヴァンゲリオン". The Rebuilds spell it as "ヱヴァンゲリヲン", but with 3.0+1.0 it's back to "エヴァンゲリオン". The title has also gone from "Evangelion New Theatrical Version" to "Shin (specifically not the kanji for "...

Re: EoE Final scene explained and connected to EoTV G.W.F Hegel.

Anno has never directly said it, but he did make statements around the time of EoE's production that he was unsatisfied with the message and themes of EoTV. To draw a line between that dissatisfication and the message and themes of EoE is not exactly hard.

Re: Rebuilds being a continuation of EoE?

A sequel in the traditional sense, probably not. But the titles of the final Rebuild film all but confirm some sort of connection to the original series.

Re: EoE Final scene explained and connected to EoTV G.W.F Hegel.

To do so is to deliberately reject Anno's intent, which is perhaps not invalid, but it's something that should be remembered when making statements about how the endings "fit together".

Re: EoE Final scene explained and connected to EoTV G.W.F Hegel.

The Hegelian stuff may be, but any sort of attempt to link EoE and EoTV is on dodgy ground, and it's on practically-collapsing ground if the attempt is to link the themes, considering EoE is partially a repudiation of the message and themes of EoTV.

I think I've finally managed to put together a timeline of events surrounding the production of 25/26 & EoE

Tell me your thoughts, as well as pointing out any possible holes. ⋅ The original plan is for episode 25 to be roughly similar to the first half of EoE (25'), with episode 26 being an amalgam of the 25 and 26 that were eventually broadcast. ⋅ The original episode 25 is scrapped d...

Origin of the "EoE was based on original scripts" rumour + episode 19 was to be rerecorded?

I've been digging through Usenet for contemprary reactions to EoE, and I found this post by Michael House translating a statement by Gainax publicity manager Sato Hiroki: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!search/%22evangelion%22$20after$3A1996$2F03$2F26$20before$3A1996$2F04$2F15/rec.arts.anime/TVuq-...

I was more worried about the opposite, to be honest. Adding an anti-SEELE secret organisation requires an extreme degree of tact.

Re: Shinji Post-Third Impact

Anno himself, despite his hopeful message, relapsed and fell into new depressions after EoE, so who knows what Shinji will have to experience after Instrumentality... That was after the TV series, not EoE, and it shows. Instrumentality becomes negative, and Shinji's final conclusion is much vaguer ...

Music performers

Do we have any official information on who performed the music for the original series, outside of the singers and arrangers? VGMdb lists performers for the first album, but I have no idea how accurate that information is.

Re: Why do some people not want to talk about 3.0/Q before the last movie comes out?

Because a lot of people, including myself, view 3.33 as a lot of setup with the payoff held until 3.0+1.0. Whether that setup will be good or not is another matter. It is worth remembering that the two films were meant to come out as one release, but that fell through (just like the last time they w...

Re: From Your Lips to the Author's Ears: Story Ideas

One change to Misato that I think could make for some very interesting stories: Misato knows about Instrumentality from the start, but not just that: she's for it and in on the conspiracy. This has the potential to change her relationships with Shinji and Asuka (and the rest of the cast, especially ...

Re: Flashing text (and Gerry Anderson influences)

Of course the video has already been made and uploaded so this is rather pointless, but episode 7 does bear a remarkable similarity to the Thunderbirds episode "Path of Destruction"...
