Re: Darling in the Franxx (Studio Trigger)

I'm going to keep watching to see what happens, but here's my first impression of Ep 15: it was really disappointing. I found the concept of the show intriguing at first, but it's just taken a turn into melodrama and anime cliches. I can't tell you exactly what I was expecting, but I was hoping for ...

Re: Rebuild-specific References/Homages/Etc.

Not sure if this is a direct reference, but in the flashback scenes of Darling in the Franxx , the characters are all wearing hospital gowns and chokers, similar to what Shinji was given to wear at the beginning of 3.0. https://i.imgur.com/aq3gSah.png https://i.imgur.com/V8R3oML.png The characters i...

Re: Personal Status After Rebuild

I've thought about the doing the same thing, but honestly — we're all going to be digesting the final movie (and NTE as a whole) for awhile. Just like every other Eva ending, 3.0+1.0 is going to be a) difficult to understand, requiring multiple viewings to fully comprehend the information available ...

Re: Grand unifying theory of Evangelion: Gendo the Janitor

^^Best answer. There is no way Gendo had no training in the sciences, or else he wouldn't have any idea how to lead a team of bioengineers and technicians. It is ridiculous to say 32 is "too old" to be in graduate school — 32 is actually the average age of grad students in the US. Fuyutski...

Re: Who will die in Final.

CT's multi-thread meltdown is depressing but compelling, like Evangelion itself. Very meta. CT, you have a little bit of Anno in you. CT: No one understands my shitposts. Gob: You never understood ours, either. CT: I thought this was supposed to be a forum without flaming...without trolling. Gob: Be...

Re: Rewatching the Rebuilds, and my thoughts

So the only believable and intellectually honest ending is for Shinji to become a cliched comic book supervillain? Suffering emotional pain and alienation does not turn people into villainous mass murderers; this is a silly, overused trope in anime and superhero movies. When I say "satisfying e...

Re: Rewatching the Rebuilds, and my thoughts

Like many fans of the original series, I hated 3.0 when I first watched it. After seeing it a few times, I still find it painful to watch, but I have to admit it's a good movie. I've spent more time thinking and reflecting on 3.0 (and the closing events of 2.0) than on any other part of the franchis...

Re: Am I alone in having a love hate relationship with Elfen Lied?

Elfen Lied was a pretty cool horror anime that influenced Stranger Things (much better show imo). It's more style than substance, I guess, but I still found it entertaining. A lot more than I can say for than all the shows I've attempted to watch and then dropped.

I consider it a guilty pleasure.

Re: Shikinami or Soryu relationship with Shinji ?

Soryu seems closer to Shinji and more likely to have a relationship with him. Whether this a good idea is a separate topic that has gotten plenty of debate here. Shikinami in Q seemed so much more mature than Shinji. Maybe she's not exactly a 28-year-old, but she seemed like an adult who prioritized...

Re: If Shinji commits suicide...

In Q, I was thinking more about Shinji running off with the Ayanami type after Misato told him Wille would protect him if he stayed in their custody. The audience understands that Shinji is simply confused — and so does the leadership at Wille, probably — but would everyone else be as understanding?...

Re: If Shinji commits suicide...

It would be incredibly silly for the last movie to end with Shinji killing himself. It's obvious that Anno has a redemptive ending in mind; the question is, how will he do it? But I don't blame some of you who are despairing about this. I have similar feelings about it. I can't see how Anno & Co...

Re: Does Shinji deserve all the hate?

And then this weird projection thing, people don’t like Shinji because he represents the part of themselves they hate! (Reading to much into the show?) when I think a more likely explanation is people simply don’t relate or don’t like his qualities. I was talking more about the kinds of viewers who...

Re: Does Shinji deserve all the hate?

In my experience, Shinji's harshest critics aren't fans, but people who watched the show once and disliked it, or were lukewarm about it. If you don't like Shinji, it's going to be hard to like Evangelion because it's all about him. I think most fans relate to him but also find him frustrating. I of...

I'm gonna say no, although it sometimes seems that way. At risk of oversimplifying a spectrum of disorders — autistic people have lots of trouble with social cues. Things like intonation, subtle changes in phrasing and body language — things that might provide hints about another person's mood or in...

I hate it when people think being introverted means having "no personality." Still waters run deep. Rei (at least in NGE) is a good example of this.

Re: Make me feel better about Evangelion.

Watch FLCL if you haven't seen it already (or just re-watch it). It'll make you feel better.

The show is a comedy that makes fun of the mecha genre, including Evangelion, and has a very Shinji-like protagonist. It's very well-done and has a happy ending, too.

Re: How Evangelion Gets Away With Being Terrible

Okay, that makes much more sense to me. Sorry for misinterpreting. Well, see, this is kind of the problem (for me, anyways). NTE lays this all out, while NGE more often leaves things like this open to interpretation, which makes it a much more emotionally and intellectually stimulating work as a wh...

Re: How Evangelion Gets Away With Being Terrible

I get that NTE doesn't have the time or format to develop everyone's backstories, and I don't think they should have tried. But it's impossible not to compare the movies to the original, even if it's apples and oranges, and think "gosh, they explained that so much better in the original." ...

Re: How Evangelion Gets Away With Being Terrible

At risk of falling into the "my opinion is superior" mindset that Gendo's Papa ranted about (I'm probably falling into it but hear me out) — the reactions to 3.0 make me feel like a lot of these Youtube Eva critics are just full of it. The fact that so many critics dismiss a movie series t...
