Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu is somehow more adorable than Ryan Reynolds. What is this strange magic?

It’s a bit of a downer that the Detective Pikachu film - a most likely-going-to-be-trash-movie that’s embarrassed to be based off an anime so aside from CG’ing Pokémon into the world they’ve thrown in Blade Runner aesthetics, celebrity voices & more to distance themselves from the source material as much as they can while still using the brand name to make mountains of money- is probably going to make more its opening day than Alita: Batle Angel - a movie that fully embraces it’s anime/manga origin - will in its entirety.

One of those two films was clearly a work of passion that everyone on set really gave their all for.
The other paid Deadpool for a week of voiceover work to stimulate the senses of comic book nerds everywhere.

Such a buzzkill, man. Goddamn.

My nostalgia-laden ass will be firmly planted in a theater seat opening weekend for this. Because it actually looks legitimately entertaining and is a different spin on the source material and doesn’t seem like total crap.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I agree with Nacks, the film looks good, and I will be there to watch it in all of its awesomeness, not just because of the franchise, but like Nacks said, because it's different and interesting and at the very least can bring that childhood dream of seeing Pokémon in real life to life.

And how can Pokémon ever hide from the fact it was an anime? Everyone already knows what Pokémon is, plus the movie is based off a game with the same name... and Ryan Reynolds always puts in maximum effort

And doesn't Alita have some big name folks in the cast as well? So that's an odd stone to throw from that glass house of yours.

All that yellow fur I suppose... it's just so confounding how he lost all that weight and height to prepare for such an important rope.

idk, I think Detective Pikachu will at least be a 7/10. The 3D designs have really grown on me. Pokemon was always more of a franchise with an "international/family show" feel, so I don't really mind if it doesn't embrace what it never really featured: The turbo-otaku appeal of Alita or Ghost in the Shell.

I dunno, man. Like, I don't disagree with you, but one of them's ALWAYS been a passion project made by artists who really gave it their all, and the other one was ALWAYS a corporate sell out to sell toys and games and nonsense. Don't get me wrong, I'm watching Alita Battle Angel as soon as I can. But, even growing up as a fan of Digimon, I couldn't argue against the massive, exploitative appeal of Pikachu's design. He's just so stinking cute and I wanna hug him all day. It might be the closest thing I have to a guilty pleasure. (Or a dirty secret.) Former Digimon Fan And "Too Old For This Shit" Film Buff Secretly Loves Pikachu.

Honestly, I find it WAY more fascinating that Hollywood productions capitalizing on 90's nostalgia seem to have been naturally Japanese-centric. 10 years ago we'd all cringe at the idea of a live-action anime adaptation (even James Cameron's involvement with Alita), and nowadays it looks like they might actually get this shit right for once. Neither Alita nor Detective Pikachu feels tone-deaf in their presentation of 90's anime nostalgia to their audiences. Sure, some of them might be stupid movies, but they'll be stupid movies that seems to understand the 90's zeitgeist better than the other live-action anime adaptation attempts. (GitS sucked ass and could have potentially doomed the whole prospect of live-action anime adaptations.) Give it a little more time, and we could genuinely be looking forward to a decent live-action adaptation of Akira or something like that.

What needs to happen next, in my opinion, is that anime cinematography needs to be implemented more in live-action films. Japanese art as a whole has embraced a very flat aesthetic ever since the Edo period (minimizing the effects of perspective and not even trying to give the illusion of depth or 3-dimensionality in its figures), which influences how anime and manga are drawn. (This is also how you can tell Avatar: The Last Airbender was created by Westerners just by looking at it, despite its Big Anime Eyes™ approach to character design.) Every time I try to replicate a shot from an anime or a manga in live-action, I'm always surprised just how long of a telephoto lens I need in order to get it to look right. The more we replicate this in movies, the closer we can match that anime look in a live-action setting.

The lazy approach to a live action Pokemon movie would be to hire a bunch of cheap kid actors to play against a green screen and hire some hack to film it from a script written by other hacks who cobbled it together from a few episodes of the TV series.

Oh, and everybody in it would be really white.

I was gonna say the lazy approach would just be to do Ash and co (Even though Ash is now considered toxic due to the 18th animated movie and the reboot has not softened this view from what I've heard) because its would be deemed the safe option or to have some boy somewhere drop in to the Pokemon world and just be that good.

Well thankfully they didn't take a lazy approach and we're going to get something different than listening to Ash suck the fun out of a room

Though uh... when did Ash become a "toxic" character? I don't remember reading that anywhere...

I heard it was the movie Hoopa and the Clash of Ages that tainted Ash the character has always had an ego and a problem with the idea of I'm right and your wrong but in the other movies and series the creators knew when to keep this in check they knew when to have his friends call bullshit, in Hoopa though they didn't and Ash becomes all these terrible elements unlikeable full on egotistic, hence after this his character went in to decline and the later movies could not save it leading to the full on reboot of the series which over hauls his character.

^ So glad Pokémon doesn't look that fucking disturbing and unsettling.

Speaking of, another new Pokémon movie is coming out Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, which is an all CGI remake of the first cinematic entry in the Pokémon series.

Detective Pikachu no longer looks like a lazy cash-grab, not even compared to Alita. This is the black hole of creativity in live-action anime this year.

It's the eyes. They made them too small.

^ Anything anime with eyes needs to go big or go home, like Alita, that was a smart character choice on their part.

I second that....I had no hopes for this movie anyway even though I love sonic, this is just typical of sonic it just has a history of blunders both on screen and in games....
