So yeah, I'm excited for this. But, I don't think I'll ever accept Will Smith as the Genie. :/ I prefer Robin Williams. ^_^ I'm also pissed off that Disney didn't even bother to ask Gilbert Gottfried to reprise his role as Iago either. :/

Getting Robin Williams to do it again would need a genie's intercession, unfortunately.

Bringing people back from the dead was against the Genie's rules. It's not a pretty picture and he doesn't like doing it.

They have CGI for that. And Outtakes from the first film...

....even if William's original contract specifically prevented that.

Honestly I was perfectly okay with Will Smith as the genie until I saw that abomination in the trailer. Like, couldn't they just have literally anything else look like the genie and just have Will Smith voice over it?

You know who I would've cast as the Genie? Wayne Brady from Whose Line is it Anyway? He can sing and he does improv. Plus, I heard that he was friends Robin Williams. I'd love to hear Wayne Brady sing A Friend Like Me and Prince Ali.

Jesus Christ, Will Smith had better not be trying to go back to his rapping days by remixing Genie tunes. That would be embarrassing for everyone involved.

Okay, so I've only every seen one other live-action Disney remake, and that was Beauty and the Beast. Aladdin's teasers are sharing some visual similarities with that film, and I don't like them one bit. Most of it is simply the fact that they all look like they were shot on small-ish sound stages. I don't know how to properly describe it without rewatching the film and taking more detailed notes, but Beauty and the Beast looks all very dark and claustrophobic for taking place in an objectively spacious enchanted castle. And it's not claustrophobic in a "dark creepy" kinda way, rather it's claustrophobic and dark in the sense of "Oh, we shot this live stage-play and are hiding all of the lack of set details by dimming the lights and pinning small spotlights on tiny parts of the set in the hopes that no one will notice," kinda way.

Both of Aladdin's teasers give off that same vibe to me. This needs to stop.

Yeah but I'm wondering if the blue genie in the trailer is in fact a red herring because if you look at the promo shots Will Smith's not wearing a black CGI suite like they do in films like Allita and planet of the apes as this is normally used to overlay a full CGI body. So I'm just wondering if that was a test which back fired terribly and they had to release the Frozen 2 trailer to get everyone's attention off it.

I dunno. Maybe he was always only going to be blue for certain scenes, but not others. Robin Williams Genie also made himself look like a normal human from time to time. But at the same time, that blue Genie clip in the teaser didn't look motion-captured at all. It looked very much like late 90's CGI key-frame animation. It was rushed and awful and didn't look natural at all, almost like his blue floating appearance was an afterthought the whole time. I have no idea what's going on inside the Mouse's head these days, outside of "Make $1 Billion per movie and leave town ASAP."

I agree regarding the 90's CGI key framing animation sadly the first thing that sprang to my mind when I saw it was god this looks like that really bad CGI thing they did with the rock in the mummy returns and I still like that film despite this and it has an excuse for being bad in that it was constrained by CGI limits of the time and people were testing new things but they didn't always work.

SPOILER: Show

Aladdin on the other hand has no excuse it has a billion dollar budget behind it I do recall though people complaining about Jurassic Worlds first trailer with regard to some of the dinosaurs though they later polished this so it might be a case that its rough cut and not fixed yet.

Though If I'm brutality honest I have not warmed to these Disney remakes Maleficent was the only one I liked because it was a fresh and new take on the original. The others have all been mostly scene for scene remakes which don't change the narrative a great deal or fix problamtic gender issues and those that have tried like beauty and the beast just made it way worse as did Cinderella, I just want them to stop with these remakes and make fresh new stuff.

The Fresh Prince of the Lamp would work fine if the CGI figure didn't have such a close facsimile of his actual face. The effect is like one of those weird cartoons where they have footage of someone's real lips superimposed over a still image of a cartoon character. Too uncanny valley. If they made him look more cartoony, it would work.

If Thanos or the giant blue cat people in Avatar or Smeagol or whatever just had a recreation of the actor's faces and not a kind of... adaptation? Interpetation? of them, they'd look horrible too.

They really should have just gone with Will Smith as Will Smith in a genie outfit or Will Smith in blue body paint or created a CGI cartoon.

In all honesty, Terry Crews would have been a better casting choice.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

For Princess Jasmine, yes, but what about the genie?

^ Jeff Goldblum as the genie, obviously. (Though I will take Chris Hemsworth if Mr. Goldblum isn't available for the role.)

So anyone wondering if the blue genie CGI Will Smith was test footage or a red herring....its not though its a mix off half human half blue genie not that, that helps any.

First 30 seconds of trailer : Oh wow, I'm seeing lots of colors! Maybe this movie won't just be various shades of blue on blue.
Next 30 seconds of trailer: Okay, so some scenes will be really colorful and then others will be gross blue CG environments. Anytime Will Smith is blue is a bad look....
Following minute of trailer: Wow... so they're just basically doing the cartoon classic scene by scene.
Trailer ends: I'll skip this but I am definitely going to watch the cartoon movie this weekend.

Final Thoughts: Doesn't really matter what I think. It will make over a billion dollars worldwide because everyone grew up loving or knowing the original film.

I hate it. Granted, I still sob every time Robin Williams says “I’ll miss you, kid” at the end of the animated film, and that doesn’t help whatever conceit people have on an “unbiased opinion,” but I still hate it. (Aw shit, I’m crying right now, fuck this movie.)

I was gonna say the only mildly good looking thing is Rajah like I know that's CG1 but its still better than the blue genie I noticed there keeping Iago out of this trailer which is nuts as he was a hugely loved character in the oringal with his dry wit and sarcasm and the sort of up and down relationship he had with Jafar like he wasn't just a minion he had his own ideas and didn't always agree with the bad guy.

I don't think I'll ever be sold on Will Smith as the Genie. But, I did like the new version of A Whole New World used at the end of the trailer.

So, I finally saw the movie yesterday. It wasn't that bad, it was actually pretty decent. They gave Jasmine some dumb female empowerment song though. And the actors who played Aladdin and Jasmine didn't have that much on screen chemistry. There's also a continuity error. When Genie gets freed from the lamp he says that's he's been trapped in there for 1000 years. But, later on in the movie he says I've never been this embarrassed in 10,000 years. The songs were good especially A Friend Like Me and A Whole New World. Genie also gets a love interest and a happy ending of his own. And there's also a sub plot with Jasmine wanting to become sultan. I don't know why they couldn't have used the term queen or emperess instead. Also, Jafar was a weak pussy and he wasn't very intimidating at all. And Iago was just a talking parrot instead of a wisecracking sidekick. Also, Will Smith did better than I thought he would as the Genie. I'm probably gonna see this movie again with one of my coworkers sometime this week.
