Nah. Quality dropping in anime is quite common (every series has at least an episode that looks trash), and EoTV was fairly interesting artistically to compensate.

I wonder what khara is thinking about this dub petition. Considering Miyamura reposted it I'm sure they now know about it.

Ugh, that would be fucking awful. I forget if it's been brought up in-thread how Nadia had kids voicing their cast in the English dub. Eva could benefit from something similar, but the possibility of poor VAs encountering those crazies you mentioned? :mayano:

At the very least, dub Shinji should also be voiced by a lady. Works beautifully for Bobby Hill and Bart Simpson, no? I'm still wondering if anime/video game dubbing couldn't benefit from other voice actors:

View Original PostSailor Star Dust wrote:I'm bringing this up because I remember comments about the Rebuild voices, like Gendo and Fuyutsuki sounding too similar—and I honestly agree. I haven't watched enough of the original NGE dub to properly comment, but I remember the original Gendo (Tristan MacAvery) having that distinct "Oh, Gendo's currently speaking" quality.

Maybe this is just how modern voice acting is? Or, maybe dubbing anime and video games vs cartoon voice work. I don't notice that much crossover of cartoon voice actors also voicing anime/video game roles.

But you know the weirdest part about all of this? Amanda Winn Lee claiming to have been in contact with the new dub director and stating that Eva is "in good hands" before turning right around and petitioning to play her old role again. Again, I don't know if that's unprofessional, but it certainly is confusing and border-line contradictory behavior.

I know I've been posting all day in here, but that's exactly what personally confuses me about this whole ordeal

Which I'm sure is the only proper response. I'm behaving like a child right now, lol.

That's because his work was just that good, still better than almost anything out there; and most importantly made extremely much money nevertheless.

I really don't know, since English is not my native language. I was just assuming those weird RRRRRs are Texan, because I heard that unbearable accent from (I think) George Bush.
Either way, it really makes him a lot more grating. I always thought that Americans (who already seem to value media on a level that seems kinda dangerous to me) are just that used to hyper-individual wish fulfillment power fantasies in media, they can't handle anything else. But in Reality it's just the poor performance of the VA.
And all of this is just my uneducated, narrow perspective.

Spike's performance is extremely shrill and lacking in range but I hear nothing of Texas in it.

I'm probably the only person that wants Stephanie Sheh to voice Misato just so we can have the obvious Sailor Moon connection voice actors the like the subbed version has. XD

Hmm... I'm working in the creative industry as well... and generally speaking,
-the better known one is,
-the better one's work is,
and especially,
-the more indispensable one is, (in particular how much money one makes for all other people involved)
the more one gets away with "eccentric" behavior. (Of course this goes only so far, nobody wants to work with an asshole, though many people are willing to in order to "make-it". I have this suspicion, that the more money involved, the seedier the people get. And I rhetorically don't even wanna know what the fuck's is going on in Hollywood.

The English voice actors of Eva have earned none of these privileges, but behave as if they have earned all of them. Neither is their work good/respected enough, nor did they anything to boost sales. But even if they were in a privileged position, leaking industry secrets is an absolute no-go. That obliviousness to one's contribution and importance bewilders me greatly. It's kind of bittersweet to see the petition being a failure. I hope it serves as a much needed reality check.

But that's besides the point.

That seems to be an inevitability for teenage actors even when the work isn't sexual in nature. I've seen people sexualizing actresses in Stranger Things.

2 weeks or so back, Polygon had an article stating how amazing it was about Eva coming to Netflix. Not clicking this article (maybe it's just a clickbait title??), but uh:

Well, wasn't Amanda WL the one that made an account here and was promptly lynched over her direction choices in the D&R and EoE dubs?

Mostly everyone treated each other with respect in that thread. One person in particular behaved incredibly rude, I locked the thread, then the Staff collectively took action on the matter. (Time Zone differences, unfortunately, made it difficult for us to immediately remedy to the situation.)

It's honestly a shame that one bad apple had to ruin a pretty interesting and polite discussion—just like how it's honestly a shame this strong(?) possibility of a redub feels as if it's turning into such a clusterfuck. That seriously doesn't have to be the case!

^ I remember that! IIRC, that "bad apple's"' ban expired after a few years and he returned shortly for a while, only to disappear again.

Agreed. But I guess they've been invited to enough anime cons to assume otherwise?

Actually, it might be time to split hairs here. Honestly, I don't think that anyone in the English VA pool is well known enough to deserve most of their eccentricities. But, while they are a part of the group reposting the petitions, they are not the ones actually creating the petitions themselves. Fans of these people have been creating the petitions, and, as far as I know, fans have been the ones randomly calling dubbing studios in the hunt of rumored of any current Eva English dubbing. The VAs have simply retweeted and commented and stuff and, since they are not under any Non-Disclosure Agreements (assuming that there are any around a rumored dub to begin with), nothing can really keep them from doing that while still working professionally on other projects. (VAs expressing opinions of properties that they've participated in over twitter like that aren't uncommon either, as Tara Strong and the gang verbalized their surprise for not being a part of CN's PowerPuff Girls reboot.) And, honestly, with almost every report only being rumored for a new set of English dubs, I suspect that these petitions from the fans and actions on the VAs' parts have just as much to do with creating a new English dub as it does having the original English VAs starring in the new English dub. I think it's universally agreed upon that ADV's English dub of Eva has enough technical/performative/textual/etc. problems that using the ADV dub would do more to hold back Eva's credibility to half of its viewers, along with the reputation of anyone who had worked in it, than advance it. And since Netflix hasn't officially said one way or the other whether or not they're doing a new English dub, why not grassroots an effort to pressure that new dub into existence?

Now, the only actual cases of these English VAs being so obnoxious that it's detrimental to their goals are Amanda Winn Lee's posts seemingly confirming that there's an English dub director and that Eva is "in good hands" (without any official word from Netflix one way or thew other) only to turn around and suggest that it somehow isn't in good hands anymore simply because it might not star her. That kind of behavior isn't really consistent with itself. But even then, at least she's not like one of the fans actively calling every dub house and attempting to post their business arrangements all over the internet. Tiffany Grant's getting Yuko Miyamura to retweet the petition is kinda weird too, but I found that more surprising than anything else. I recall them being friends, so Miyamura's probably just trying to help a sister out. I just never really cared for Grant's dub work is all. (IIRC, Hideaki Anno was reported to have actually liked Asuka's English dub, so I clearly must be in the wrong here. )

I decided to look into it. The tl:dr of it is that Fukunaga says that Netflix will do the series a disservice by releasing it with a bunch of other titles and letting it get buried in a deluge of content while also claiming that Funimation would have done a much better job marketing and managing it as a brand so it'd rise back to prominence in the west. Looking at how they handled the release of 3.0 and how they pulled a bunch of their titles from VRV and Crunchyroll in favor of Hulu, I can't particularly say I believe him.

At the end he says Funimation really wanted Evangelion, so it sounds to me like Netflix may have outbid them for the rights and there's a hint of salt.
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

Can't argue with Gen Fukunaga's viewpoint on Netflix getting Eva.
It's an easy target to mock his opinion because of where he's coming from as the president of a company that would have had the rights to Eva if they weren't so astronomically high.
Eva is just another piece of content in Netflix's never-ending faucet of media. It's very easy to get caught up in the echo chamber that is a fanbase - in the grand scheme of things no one knows or cares that there's this nonsense going on with the original dub cast. I'll be curious to see if Netflix does anything out of the norm regarding Eva or will it be like all other releases on the service. One day it will drop on Netflix amongst a bunch of other newer releases, be buried in people's recommendation lists for a few weeks where it occasionally surfaces near the top and then as more expensive Netflix Original titles continue to be released it'll just be another title in the library.
It will be available but will it be seen outside the already initiated anime nerds & existing fans of the series? Being an EvaGeek makes us the worst judges of how the show will be received.
I don't think it's clickbait just like I don't think it's clickbait when filmmakers & producers point out Netflix doesn't give original titles a theatrical release or even tell the filmmakers how many people viewed their movie.
We'll see how Eva will fare as a part of Netflix's available for streaming library. I'm excited to see it in HD certainly.

@ BlueBasilisk: Mh, like so many fans have been mentioning, had Funi gotten NGE/etc, it probably would've been region-locked to only Canada and Mexico. The beauty of this Netflix release is multiple sub/dubs throughout so many different countries (as it should be).

Right. There are benefits and drawbacks to either company having the property. Netflix has only announced that they've acquired Eva so far. We'll see what they do marketing-wise when it's closer to the release date.

Gen Fukunaga has a point. It doesn't matter if it's Evangelion or if it's The Most Recognizable Ghibli Film In The United States™, it'll always be buried under the Netflix Original titles. And Netflix has never been transparent about viewer retentions or other viewership stats. (I'm not saying that they're lying, only that they're not transparent about it. Truthfulness is another argument for another day.) Also, all Netflix can really do is allow access to watch the show, where as, for all their faults, Funimation could have given us DVD/Blu-ray booklets and extra video features like it did the other Eva titles they've released. And we definitely would have had months of trailers announcing the release, and probably would have even had theatrical runs for D&R and EoE. (Something I'd kill for.)

In this specific case, Netflix was able to obtain international distribution, whereas Funimation would have only gotten North American distribution at best. So they had the higher ground there. But international distribution isn't Netflix's default form of operation either. Sure, VPNs could have given people access to region-locked online content even if Netflix had region-locked their stuff like they normally do, but the same would have been true of Funimation's iTunes releases. But that's the only way in which Netflix's Eva current licensing beats out Funi's licensing. In every other way, it sucks. But we've been without official Eva licensing for so long in the US that we're desperate for anything. And Gendo'sPapa is right, we at EvaGeeks are the absolute worst at judging these things.

In the end, I'm still happy we'll get to see it, even if it is on Netflix.
