The people who are mad would still be mad and AWL would still probably be whipping up twitter drama because she feels like Eva is her baby. The series has long passed the fandom nostalgia threshold where any alterations or new takes will be received as a mortal offense by a vocal part of the fandom. It's like the people who lash out at Rebuild just because it has the gall to be different from NGE. But then I also feel like the original tv series would benefit greatly if it lost its sacred cow status.

We would have skipped the "my uncle works at Netflix (part time, full time at Nintendo) and told me they are dubbing NGE again" part. They would have explained their reasons (like for starter a better script) and people would have accepted more easily.

And more details is always better imo.

I’m fine with Swasey’s take on the character, but for me MacAvery is the definitive English voice (and one of the best parts of the ADV dub). If the redub ends up recasting, I wonder who’s gonna take on Gendo’s VA.

If Robin Williams hadn't killed himself because of his Lewy Body dementia, one wonders whether he would've been in the running for this.

Other than that huge missed opportunity, there is one thing that would be the most interesting performance change for a new dub, and that is Asuka having a (well performed) German accent for all of her dialogue. It's the one aspect of the Japanese dub that they were never able to pull off. Realistically, having lived in Germany all her life, all of her dialogue should have a German tinge to it.

Grant's performance, and the way she was directed, always felt too Americanized for someone having lived mostly in Germany, and the one or two times they threw in some snippets of German into her dialogue felt lazily tacked on.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Eh, I thought MacAvery and Swasey were both decent enough. Neither of their Gendos were performances I had a problem with. But I wouldn't be signing any petitions to rehire either of them.

That petition hasn't even reached 5000 signatures. This is the first time I'm happy about the fact that Netflix doesn't care about fringe groups.

Since many people here praised the dub for NTE as being a lot better than what they did to Evangelion.
No.
It's cringe inducing. It's deflating all of the atmosphere. Shinji in particular, with those super thick Texan (?) RRRRRRs sounds really annoying.
Spike Spencer is solely the reason Shinji gets as bad of a reputation as he does in the US.

^ Yep, Spencer's from Houston :sweatdrop: (lol, I swear I remember the 26 AU sequence throwing in a "y'all", but I couldn't find anything like that when I checked.) Like, it's super cool how the I city I live in was known for dubbing NGE and other series, but yeah.

Sorry if I'm repeating myself from earlier in-thread with this, but:

View Original PostDevRei17 wrote:I'm trying to remember four years ago - Did the Sailor Moon redub get this much flack? (Sailor Moon's arguably bigger in the West than Eva too.)

Nope. Also: DIC & Cloverway were Canadian companies whereas VIZ and Studiopolis is in California. A redub make complete sense for an uncensored version of the show (the dialogue and TV edits, etc). I totally understand fans wishing VIZ's BD/DVD releases included DIC & Cloverway episodes—I hoped for this, too. When it comes to dub voices, I'd personally argue the DIC/Cloverway voice acting had a distinct quality to the characters. In contrast with VIZ's voices, when briefly looking away at the screen, I can't tell who's currently talking (except for Artemis/Luna/Makoto. Artemis and Luna I'm familiar with their VAs from Persona 3 & 4, while Mako has a particular deep quality to her voice).

I'm bringing this up because I remember comments about the Rebuild voices, like Gendo and Fuyutsuki sounding too similar—and I honestly agree. I haven't watched enough of the original NGE dub to properly comment, but I remember the original Gendo (Tristan MacAvery) having that distinct "Oh, Gendo's currently speaking" quality.

Maybe this is just how modern voice acting is? Or, maybe dubbing anime and video games vs cartoon voice work. I don't notice that much crossover of cartoon voice actors also voicing anime/video game roles.

I've never been to Texas and I didn't detect an accent on Shinji. Would being familiar with Texas make me more likely to notice the accent? I assume it'd be less likely. (I guess you wouldn't be able to answer this, but it's amazing to me that someone noticed an accent on Shinji and I didn't.)

I always thought Maurice LaMarche would make a great Gendo. Y'know, that faux Vincent Price/Orson Welles voice he does.

If I am not mistaken the entire ADV dub was done in Houston. I actually met Tiffany Grant at a small local con.

I sometimes feel the ol' "reply before reading" is happening in-thread. Literally 2 posts above, I replied about the dub being in Houston

Good lord, Grant apparently went ahead and emailed her friend Miyamura about the "situation", so Miyamura ended up RT'ing the Petition link! Just...please, leave the seiyuu out of this    Netflix is going to do this however they want. Is it just me, or is this situation getting out of control? It seriously reeks of disrespect, IMO.

EDIT: @JC: That's an excellent point you bring up. Up and coming talent won't have a chance to show their stuff if this situation unfolds how it's sounding. (Hopefully, just fans being fans and not how Netflix's actions will be....)

I've posted about this on my FB but I feel really bad for any potential young VAs who are/have auditioned for this and are now sat there watching this unfold knowing that they could be in contention for a part. They going to feel awful about this and the whole thing sets them up for abuse.

I understand the original VAs want to be part of this but their conduct could have repercussions.

Ah geez, this really is getting ridiculous. I get that the VAs are attached to those characters, but...if netflix/the dubbing studio wanted those actors, wouldn't they have contacted them to audition? I doubt there's any insult intended even if certain parties didn't see it that way.

The whole thing seems really unprofessional to me. Shouldn't this kind of thing be negotiated between the actors and the studio(s) in private without dragging others into it on social media? And like jcmoorehead was saying, it puts any new talent in a real bad spot and is so unfair to them. If they do get the parts they'll catch shit from angry fans and that's not at all fair.
Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

It's a catch 22, really. It is very unprofessional to petition. They petition, because they desperately need work. They need work, because they act in an unprofessional manner.

The desperation makes me want them to recast out of principle now. I already didn’t like these VAs in their roles, now I’m actually starting to dislike them as people. Spencer especially has been annoying on Twitter.

Someone needs to tell to stop I know that they wont, but like jeez. People need to know that we really do not want them to be tied to this.

Huge Evan fan that I am, I've honestly felt halfway tempted to say something (at least a tweet to Miyamura) but I'm certain I'd have the weirdos attacking me, so I'd rather not :dizzy: Better to just wait and see how Netflix responds to all this (so to speak). Maybe they'll announce the dub casting gradually soon, if the auditions are still in-progress?

Also: maybe the petition numbers being so low means that Netflix wouldn't even give all this fuss much consideration, anyway?

Tiffany Grant got Yuko Miyamura on board?

This is gonna be fuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnn........

I really don't know what the VA "professional" norms are in the Anime English Dub industry. "Professional Behavior" is a very loosely defined term in creative industries like film or music. (Ever noticed that Hideaki Anno was never considered "Unprofessional" for delivering EoTV in their very rough, unanimated states? Weird, right? Clearly a drop in "quality" compared to the rest of the show, and he gets off scott-free.) This includes VAs. I really dunno if this is considered "unprofessional" or not on the part of the older VAs, but I do find it cringe-inducing and counter-productive to the overall goal of the English VAs. (But I find the whole NGE English Dub cringe-inducing anyway, so...)

Also, NTE English Dub is better than NGE's, but only on a technical level. I wish I could being myself to care about the performance of the English VAs one way or another, but I don't so that can't be something over which I can be opinionated. Honestly, if there needs to be an English dub, I see more benefits in recasting everyone anyway. I agree with the whole "newer actors also finding work" angle. I do think it's be great if we could get some talented teenagers to do the pilots'' voices, for example, but given the tendencies of anime creeps on the internet, I'd also advise against it. (Don't need some legal minor knocking it out of the park with her performance as Rei/Asuika/Hikari, and then being stalked by sex-crazed virgins for the foreseeable future.)
