Bad Times at the El Royale

It doesn’t pull off the stylistic flourishes it tries for and comes across as trying to be Tarantino by way of Wes Anderson (or perhaps the other way around) but that’s excused by top notch performances and a tight script. Easily the most unpredictable thriller I’ve seen in a while.

I saw Nosferatu on Halloween night...

Being on a big screen with lively, tinted, restored footage + a live band/orchestra for the music + sound effects made it quite the more spectacular experience than I ever recalled in the past...I enjoyed it quite a bit, which is funny because Nosferatu is essentially described as death incarnate, which bings me to the other movie I saw recently....

Halloween (2018)

It. Was. AMAZING.

I liked everything about this, especially with regard to the depiction of Laurie's trauma...As Eva fans, I'm sure we can all agree that showing that kind of emotional disturbance for a lead character is quite a big deal, especially when it's handled right...And here, Curtis really shines...I know they threw out all of the post H1 canon, but damn I love how fresh this felt. Plus, I for one actually loved the humor and I was even intrigued by the twist that was thrown in...

I should explain that the first Halloween I ever saw was H6 Curs elf Michael Myers back in 1997...I never heard of Halloween or Michael Myers prior to that and, being as young as I was, it scared living shit outta me! Hence, Ive been a (terrified) fan ever since lol

Really, though, up o that point I'd seen Chucky, Jason, and Freddy and while they are "scary," I'd leaner dot already laugh at them and didn't feel much fear. Buy, Michael Myers was very different....He wasn't campy or jokey or really any of that...He was just downright mean spirited, brutal and frightening like a murderous death machine...Id liken hm to being more like the Terminator than anything...

Anyway, I'd seen H20 a few years later and (I didn't realize this at the time) even though the orginal continuity gets displaced, it was quite cathartic to see him decapitated; truly the perfect ending for the original series...Until Resurrection came along, ugh... I don't outright hate it these days (mostly due to Curtis coming back better than ever), but I'd definitely watch it after the Rob Zombie films which would be after Season of the Witch, which would be after marathoning Halloween (1978) through Halloween (2018).

That being said, Halloween is my favorite horror franchise and I kinda dig how it's turned into a sorta "choose your fate" style series where different entries branch off from the original...makes the viewing experience kinda fun.

Coco 2017

I loved this its visually beautiful and awe inspiring in how it views the day of the dead and it does a far better job with its characters than The Book of life whose horrible tropes and lazy sexism hurt the movie no end and stops it being as good as it could have been which I always found a huge shame as Mexican cultuer is fascinating. Coco feels more real more genuine and heartfelt with a lot more to say about family, love and loss...

SPOILER: Show
My god did the end part of this film ever punch me the feels in a way I was not ready for or did not expect and the idea that in the land of the dead that you can die a second death if your forgotten is heartbreaking in its self yet it raises the stakes in a way that has you rooting for the good guys to win because there all have there hearts are in the right place.

I also like that this movie pulls off a brilliant subvert on the seeking the fame trope in that at first your led down the path to believe that Miguel is interested in fame and fortune but later he realizes what fame cost Héctor and that in reality he didn't care about it and he just wanted to return home to give it up and be with his family but de la Cruz just couldn't let it go and murdered him and stole his songs and legacy.

Kudos to Pixar for showing that kind of evil villain as its rare in there films as its very close to reality in how some people will murder and kill to get what ever they desire and it makes de la Cruz genuinely threatening. I'd say this is best offering Pixar has done in a while, its much more on form with what they used to do which was ask a moral question and get you thinking in there movies while punching you in the feels.

Actually watched Coco, too a while ago. Really enjoyed it, and the animation is oh so gorgeous

I liked Frozen or more to the point Eliza, but I get why people don't like it or don't warm to it, there is some really jarred stuff in it where Disney is trying to call out its past gender issues (Like marriage in a day to a guy you don't know) Yet it pull's the same trope with the rock trolls out of know where and your kind of like what the hell? Like you can't call yourselves out then fly on that trope later in the film when your trying to modernise the gender dynamics, it makes you look so damn stupid.

Also Han's villain run does have a few plot holes (Like how no one checks that Anna is really dead and takes his word for it) Yeah I get why they did this plot wise but I don't believe the royal court would be that dumb because there's power and lands involved along with alliances so they'd want to be sure before they start pitching and fighting over who gets what.

Oh, I'm not talking about Frozen itself. I'm talking about the 20-minute cartoon about Olaf they put in front of Coco.

Oh that, yeah I heard that was really bad and it was very dumb of Disney to assume that Pixar fans would even go for that, that short should have been put on wreck it Ralph 2 since people know Eliza's in it and more of viewers would be Frozen fans.

Halloween 5 - The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
Underrated entry in the series but not great.
Official trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPwAtB65dCs
Really good fan trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvTjz_LXvPo

Cons/Nitpicks...
- The bumbling cop duo & the silly quirky music that accompany them are grating (but thankfully don't have much screen time and don't share any with the much cooler and more competent Sheriff Meeker)
- In general it's just generic more of the same-ness from 4 but not as well executed.
- Why didn't Loomis or the swat guys find the bodies in the attic before the trap was set?
- Myers has his knife in this position perpetually towards the end of the film and it seems kinda cheesy, like the outstretched arms the Universal monsters used to do but worse.
SPOILER: Show
Image

Missed opportunities...
- Not doing much with the twist at the end of 4.
- Killing off...
SPOILER: Show
Rachel really early.

Mixed Elements...
- Donald, Harris, Starr & Cornell like 4 still make for a solid cast, altho sadly many of them don't get much to do compared to 4.
- Harris is still great but her performance is limited somewhat by not being able to speak for much of the film. (altho this adds to the audiences sympathy for her)
- This is Pleasence's most unhinged performance as Loomis and yet simultaneously the actor himself seems tired/worn out while in 4 it seemed like only the character was such (appropriately).
- Many find Tina annoying, I personally like her. Her interaction with Jamie is very sweet.
- 5's mask still isn't particularly good but is much better then the mask in 4.
- How Myers survived 4 is reasonable and doesn't resort to the preposterous like Resurrection (although why the hermit nursed him back to health instead of taking him to a hospital is never explained)
- Kills in the barn are solid even if they feel more Jason-ish then Myers, Myers with a scythe is cool.
- The...
SPOILER: Show
mostly off screen shootout in the police station at the end is abrupt and mysterious but part of me wished they showed it, we already had a completely off screen police station massacre in 4.
The shootout was filmed as seen in this BTS image but cut for whatever reason.
Image

Pros...
- The more gothic redesign of the Myer's house is suitably cool & menacing.
- The entire end sting operation, chase scene through the house & Loomis's trap for Myers is all great & suspenseful.
- Film is pretty surprisingly brutal to a child character, Jamie gets cut & scraped up severely.
- The moment of Jamie cornered in the attic and accepting her fate by crawling into the casket is daaarrrk.
- Tina unknowingly in the car with Myers is suspenseful.
- As is Myers trying to chase Jamie down with the car &...
SPOILER: Show
Tina's sacrifice.

- Score is solid.

Absolutely, the Godzilla series works in much the same way with it's 1984 film ignorning all 15 movies between it and the original.
I wish we could get some comic/graphic novel sequels to some of the dead timelines, follow after 6 with Myers & the cult continuing to go after Jamie's baby or continue after H20/Resurrection and show Myers going after Laurie's son.

But after I got over that... oh man, this is my favorite Pixar movie since Wall-E. The world of the Dead is visually just breathtaking, the script is amazing.

Tonight, I'm gonna watch the new Halloween. I've watched the first movie as a kid and was afraid to go to bed for a long time as a result. Really looking forward to the new one.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

TBH, anything is better than the first Jurassic World but this one takes the anti looter mentality that The Lost World had and amplified it by about 1.21 gigawatts! :D

Even though sometimes it feels like it drags on in the evading Indoraptor and it did feel like a waste of a perfectly good Jeff Goldblum cameo, seeing all those richies get what they deserve for being greedy and having the escaped dinosaurs knock em around and eat em is so satisfactory. I will say though that the Owen and Claire always get the most awkward kisses. Last time around it was due to being caught up in the moment and this time it was to get him to save Maisie.

Halloween The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) - Producer's cut in full for the first time and re watched much of the theatrical cut afterwards for comparison.

- While like 5's mask the neck here is still a little too large the rest of the mask is a big improvement over 4-5 & h20.
- Anyone who dislike Myers's conflicted behavior and tears in 5 should be pleased with his absolute zero hesitation in
SPOILER: Show
killing Jamie in ether version of this film.

- I am not sure which version of
SPOILER: Show
Jamie's death I prefer. The weak stabbing & hospital assassination of the PC seems anti climatic for the character, but the farm implement shredding of the TC seems too mean spirited & brutal for a character we spent the last 2 films watching as a desperate sympathetic child.

- Seeing Loomis happy and almost at peace during his 1st scene is very nice and a big change of pace from the way we have always seen him up to this point in the franchise. This early sequence with him & Dr.Wynn is longer and better in the PC. (the film could definitely use more of their interaction & Wynn in general however)
- The TC stupidly cuts out Loomis's reaction to finding Jamie.
- Rudd is decent here, he gets a few sweet moment with Jamie's baby but overall is fairly emotionless (purposefully).
- There are a few moments towards the end of the TC were Rudd gets to show more emotion then in the PC, moments were he is clearly petrified and can't do anything but semi chuckle in despair.
- Marianne Hagan as Kara Strode is a likeable very sympathetic and motherly final girl.
- General editing in the PC is vastly better, the TC uses a very lame, very 90s style of showing abrupt harsh flashes of gruesome images jarringly between shots. Pace of the PC is slower and feels a lot more franchise appropriate.
- The lighting is better in the PC.
- Some absolutely beautiful shots throughout the film such as this...
SPOILER: Show
Image

- Scores are different, both are good but the PC has a more classical version of the theme & utilizes it's score better overall.
- The PC's handling of the cult and explaining their goals/motives is VASTLY superior to the TC, PC they rightfully stick purely to the supernatural & handles such with reasonable subtlety, the TC tries to make it about mad science & doesn't explain it barely at all.
- Scenes showing the connective tissue between 5's ending and this film are cut out of the TC.
- The TC's cut of John's death with his head exploding is ludicrous.
SPOILER: Show
- The TC operating room massacre is cool I guess but there is no reason given in the TC's story as to why Myers would turn on the cult out of the blue with nothing at all triggering that turn. Nor is it shown who/what the cult doctors were operating on when Myers interrupted.
- Myers "defeat" by magic runes in the PC while not flashy or epic at all is a lot more believable and natural to the story up to that point then TC's defeat by having skinny ass Paul Rudd beat him with a pipe, regardless of what poisons Rudd pumped him full of before the beating.
- Ending fate's for Loomis there is no comparison, the TC is a absolute insult to Pleasence, ending the film with his off screen screams without explanation. The PC gives him a cruel but poetically appropriate ending.
- That said It's never explained why Wynn was giving up his position as Myer's handler (a throwaway line about him having cancer or something would have sufficed) nor why he would choose Loomis who is obviously older and more frail then him.

Overall, the TC is a absolutely pathetic butchering of the PC which IMO is a full on good film (far from perfect but good). Makes me wonder what is missing from Hellraiser Bloodlines which I have heard was similarly edited to hell by the same company.

Watched Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. It was colorful, fun, fast, hilarious & excessively nerdy loaded with tons of fan service and obscure characters.
It was honestly a lot like Avengers: Infinity War... except you know, not being a ponderous ugly mess. That 76 minute running time was a bonus too.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom 2018

You know I didn't think this could top the first for being bad...it can its Jurassic World but as if it was written as a piece of bad fanfiction. Like the first story a writer does that's a really bad awful attempt that they look at it 12 years later and go god that was shit my writing sucked back then yet this was a Hollywood movie someone marketed it, sighed off on it and put money in to.

SPOILER: Show
I really hated seeing Jurassic Park get it in this its a horrible unnecessary set piece that breaks your heart because its like watching your child hood die and its really mean spirited and cruel to any fan who grew up with this because you see dinosaurs you know and love die and its the worst use of nostalgia I've ever seen in a reboot it left me angry and depressed.

The other sad thing is Owen and Claire are written better here but once again every character around them sucks or is just boring or a stereotype and the villain is weak as fuck he comes off like a greedy minion.

Also less said the better about Zira and I can see why they cut out her LGBT part about her being a lesbain because the bash lash to Colin Trevorrow would have been beyond belief. She's an outdated 90's stereotype and you can tell Trevorrow is so clueless about writing strong women beyond making them unkind towards men for no good reason, its such pathetic and childish writing.

The truly sad part is had this movie been written well and in the truly serious vein of Jurassic Park by a writer who wanted to ask moral question it could have been awesome as the idea of using Dinosaur tech to clone human's is a serious moral question yet the movie never dives there all it cares about is it's blood, gore and the Indoraptor (Who should have had its own horror movie as its perfect for a stand alone horror but not for a Jurassic Park movie.)

Very good point Chuckman.
SPOILER: Show
Yeah its like she's no longer that awesome terrifying human killer that she was in Jurassic Park now all she does is play hero or villain eater pisses me off no end, because its made clear in the first film and Jurassic World she's a first generation prototype she has no empathy she's an eating machine and she's out lived her welcome.

Plus the amount these animals sell for in the script is an outright joke its a dinosaur its not gonna sell for millions its will sell for billions possibly trillions, because its a one of a kind and rare....and I could add a whole extra rant about the fact that you can't use T rex blood on a raptor as a blood transfusion because they are on a whole different family tree to one another and have nothing in common...but hey fuck the films makers who have no time to look at wiki or a dinosaur book....

I can't remember the name of the weird twerp who's the corporate point man on gutting Jurassic Park as a concept, but he's pretty open about Jurassic World 2 being a corporate-mandated stepping stone to the "Planet of the Raptors" movie they actually want to make, which will also be aggressively terrible.

They want a Jurassic Cinematic Universe and they're doing the same dumbass thing that DC and Star Wars did, making dumbass soulless movies that stumble over questions that no one really cares to ask.

Seriously, they could start a "Planet of the Raptors" movie with a five minute montage and just say "this his how the world is now" and no one would care.

Then again, that's too much to ask from screenwriters who decided that InGen used Jason Vorhees DNA to make the brains of their dinosaurs or that it makes perfect sense for an 18,000 pound bipedal animal that smells like rotting meat to sneak up on people *who are looking at it but the camera is facing another way*.

I will be very surprised at this point if anyone cares for the last movie as I feel that the first two have spent all there good will and as you say Planet of the Raptors is a flawed stupid concept I personally see the next one being the flop like Predators was, like so much so it hurts the franchise so bad it puts it out of action for a very long time.

Some one also pointed out there is a mayor plot hole in Fallen Kingdom like a huge one that is so outright bad and flaws the whole of the next movie outright making it utterly meaningless. All the dinosaurs have trackers that includes the Mosasaurs (Who no one checked was missing as her tracker would light up even off the park.) But this tracker means all off these dinosaurs could be found again all over the world if they created new tracking software (Only the black market ones would be an issue) and there's in reality not a lot of dinosaurs on the loose.

So unless there gonna go for rich people building armies off them in the sequel no doubt to weaponize (Because shit we just can't let that jarred plot line die) there is no real invasion yes people might die but the army would come in and kill the T rex once she got in to a big city. Yes the Mosasaurs might eat thousands of people but hey that's what rockets from submarines are for blowing holes in threat level things so she'll proberbly get through one beach before all the countries band together and kill her.
Anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live. After all, you are alive, so you will always have the chance to be happy.

Michael Crichton is rolling over in his grave.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

I don’t know. I’ve read pretty much his entire body of work and a lot of Crichton’s works published post Jurassic Park are so bad they make the Jurassic World films looks good.

Either way, they’ve already got a release date set for the third one - June 11, 2021 - it will go ahead into production, it will get released, it will most likely be terrible, it will still make north of a billion worldwide and everyone involved will get very nicely paid. Then they’ll probbaly keep making Dinosaurs in the Modern World movies or whatever until the well runs so dry that they go for the easy win of remaking the original novel as a dark limited series on some streaming service.
