Hayashi/Yamazaki extra wrote:Q: How did you decide who was responsible for the script of which episode?

Hayashi: The director had already planned out episodes 1-6 in considerable detail and handled the script for episode 1 himself, I was put in charge of episode 2.

Yamazaki: From around episodes 8-11 onward [7], the rough structure of the episodes had been decided upon, but it was still undecided which characters we wanted to focus on and what they would do, so we collected everyone’s ideas and distributed the episodes among ourselves. It was close to a voting system.

[...]
Hayashi: [about klaxxohime] I made an appeal to the director to give her the appearance of a very young child (laughs).

CONTINUE section wrote:Q: Hayashi-san, for this work, you were in charge of the script together with Nishigori-san, but what specifically did you contribute?

A: I performed supporting tasks such as turning the plot Nishigori-san had created into the original script and doing the series composition.

Q: So this means that at the time when you joined, Nishigori-san’s plot, the setting and the rough course of events were already in place?

A: That’s right. The setting was fixed, and there also existed rough sketches for the characters, klaxxosaurs and so on. The outline of the story was already visible to a certain extent.

[…]

Q: Regarding the emotional state of the characters, did you feel that, fundamentally, what Nishigori-san wanted to depict was how the children change and grow up in response to their surroundings, or was it the love between them?

A: Both of them… If I had to choose one, I’d say it’s a multiprotagonist drama. Of course, portraying their love is important as well, but more than that, I got the strong impression that he wanted to write a multiprotagonist drama about these children including Hiro and Zero Two. Because of this, in the beginning, before starting work on the actual script I created a prototype and we compared it with Nishigori-san’s vision, but I tried to properly incorporate such emotional elements. [8]

Q: In depicting such a relationship between the adults and the children, Hiro’s, and by extension the children’s situation, is likened to that of birds. The bird motive in particular is very easy to understand, but why birds?

A: From the initial stages, Nishigori-san really empathized the birds. They’re strongly incorporated in monologues and there are many parts where they’re linked to the characters’ emotions and circumstances.

Q: So I was thinking, maybe it’s precisely because the children were linked to birds and other organic metaphors and inspirations that the Franxx were named after flowers?

A: Hm, now that you mention it… I never asked why they were named after flowers (laughs).

Q: […] The issue containing this interview will go on sale after episode 24, the final episode, has aired, do look for forward to seeing the finished version of episode 24?

A: I really look forward to it! I wrote the script for episode 24 together with Nishigori-san. I think it turned into a spectacular and moving ending.

Q: Had episode 24 already begun to take shape during the initial production stages to some extent?

A: It looked like Nishigori-san had a lot of trouble deciding on a conclusion. He squeezed in small elements even after the broadcast of the series had already started.

Q: I see. When was the script for episode 24 finished?

A: My work was finished around the time the first few episodes of DarliFra had aired. I had originally turned Nishigori-san‘s basic outline of the plot into what could be called a very rough draft of a script, and without finalizing it, Nishigori-san started drawing the storyboard at once.

Footnotes
[7] This sounds a bit strange, 第8~11話辺り以降 basically means „around episodes 8-11 and then everything after that“, which especially clashes with Nishigori’s claim that episode 13 was pretty much planned from the start, so TL /a/non thinks that episode at least should be exempt from this statement.
[8] TL /a/non was not sure if their inadequate knowledge of Japanese is at fault here or if this is indeed worded as ambiguously as it seemed, and cannot tell for sure if そういう情緒的な要素 is supposed to refer to “love” or not.

It just sounds like everything just got messed up and now everyone's trying to point fingers at others because of the poor reception because no one wants to take the hit and take the blame hence the clashing and contradictions in statements.

Also the more I think about this the more I wish they'd just stripped out all the Evangelion themes like depression, sexuality, sex, gender and LGBT issues which they couldn't pull off due to incompetence and made Franxxs silly and stupid fun much like Kill a kill is because as a piss take and parody of the mecha series it just might have worked and might have been way more fun.

The main interview was in the June issue of NewType, i.e. would have been on news-stands about the time of the wedding episode; at that point, the ratings were decent and the ending was a secret to anyone outside the production team.

The interesting bits are that it was meant to fall into four parts (if only the joins weren't so visible), and that it was intended to be an ensemble cast thing rather than just the star-cross'd lovers (if only the seams weren't so blatant).

Interesting to see it from Nishigori's POV.
I think too much liberty might have been the problem of ideas colliding.

I made an appeal to the director to give her the appearance of a very young child (laughs).

This is honestly creepy in the wrongest of ways.

And guess who's going to talk about it now?

Okay, okay, this is going to be hard. My feelings about Darling are confusing, I've been thinking about it for a month, but I'm going to do my best explaining.

I'll just start by saying that the show is indeed a mess. A mess that worked for me, but a mess nonetheless. We went from a show saturated with obvious sex metaphors, to a "standard" mech series, to a sort of slice of life, to a weird homage to Gunbuster at the end. That's a lot of shifts. Too many shifts.
The mechs are a good example. Darling is a mech show for the first 14 episodes or so and then they just become things that exist in the world. There are less fights, the fights that do happen are less interesting. Frankly, I feel the show would have been better of without them! The best parts of the show were the character interactions, and that was the focus, so why even bother with mechs?
Evangelion and Gundam weren't about the robots, but they sure were a part of story! Not here.

What to say about the pregnancy and all that? I don't even know. It didn't bother me at all, in fact, I liked it, the epilogue with all the kids warmed my heart, but, obviously, not everyone was happy. Even I was pissed at how miserable a fate the one lesbian in the show got. I mean, really? She helps the other while slowly dying? Come on.
The show has such simple messages: "The power of LOVE" "Have kids" " Don't blindly listen to authority" And yet, despite being so simple, not enough time was spent on them. The show has weird pacing. Some of the early episodes go slowly and then at the end you have scenes go by at sonic speeds.
There is so much that I like, but it feels like it's all buried under unnecessary nonsense. Seriously, why is this even a mech show? Because its predecessors were?

I said I liked the epilogue, but the fate of Darling and 02 is trash. Standard bullshit, "We'll met in a reincarnation!" Spare me.

Man, is this even a positive review? It still is.

What about everything else?

Well, the music is good, not spectacular, and only a couple of tracks are memorable, but it does its job.

The animation is probably the most consistent thing in the show, I found it to be good looking all the way through, although the CGI was trash, and the background varied in quality.

You know, and that's kind of it. I know, I disliked many things about Darling, but it's like Devilman Crybaby, there are a thousand small things I don't like, but the good thing still manage to shine through.

I wish Darling in the Franxx was better. I wish it wasn't a mess. Because at the end, only I and a few others really liked, and that sucks, because at the end, I just wanted more people to enjoy Darling, because what's the fun in talking about something you hate? Where's the fun in being the only person to enjoy something? What do I gain by that?

And in the end, I still really liked Darling. It missed most people, but at least it hit me, and I won't forget it
9/10

And now people are done talking about this show. Robersora, your soul can rest now. There's a new season here, filled with many new anime, most of them probably crap, but certainly with a few good ones in the middle, so lets go there.

Some good news -- Yuichiro Umehara, Goro's VA is recovering and getting back to work.

If the series had merely been bad or even just mediocre, probably we wouldn't. As it is, even if I personally didn't care for the 02/Hiro romance, we had something with bursts of excellence, that failed more for being over-ambitious, and fumbling the landing, rather than for being timid. Still, it's not like retcon movies or OVAs are unknown -- maybe we might see an End of FranXX some day.

View Original Postbarnett wrote:To conclude, I am a bit surprised that among the many shows mentioned as source of inspiration nobody recalled another A-1 production (and my favourite anime of this decade) From the New World - Shin sekai yori, which competently frames a story of apocalyptic teenage-hood and coming-of-age into a compelling fantasy/sci-fi setting.
Partly due to people looking at the high-profile things the main staff have worked on (especially the Gainax connection, and Nishigori's stated wish to make something Gainax-like), and in part because the show has the trappings of mecha, and so tends to get discussed in those terms, there being enough examples to draw from, after all -- comparing what we got to what seemed the intend as conveyed by the interview I posted above lends itself to the short-hand description of "they thought they were making Fafner, but they actually ended up making Eureka Seven".

Phew, very good to hear. Loved his voice acting, would be a real shame if he wouldn't be able to do it again

I would even go as far as saying that the entire arc from Ep 8 to Ep 15 was excellent, but I now for a fact that people will disagree on that one.
End of FranXX would be a very good thing to happen, even (or maybe especially) if it is "just" a retelling of Ep 24 that gives each plotline more time to flesh out. Although Im not sure if naming it like this would be a good idea

This was probably my least favorite thing about the series(except for the aliens) and one of the reasons why NGE is the GOAT; the shows main allure to (most) true fans is the psychological shit but in NGE all of the Angel battles, Nigouki against the harpies and the use of Shogouki during the Third Impact are all very awesome stylistically. And all of the fights in Ha are super cool. Now enough about eva... The battles during Darling the Franxx I thought were all pretty cool until they introduced the aliens and went to outer space, but there were never really enough of them for me. In the later episodes before the aliens showed up I legit forgot I was watching a mech show. But it's not like the show was catering to just me so I don't really care and it didn't get to me.

I enjoy almost all of the anime I watch(I maybe seriously disliked five series that I've watched) and I liked Darling in the Franxx, and I really liked the first 15 eps or so. I've missed it for the last few Saturdays for sure. The shifts were a bit much, but to be honest the first time I watched NGE the shift in tone kind of rubbed me the wrong way too... So I'm looking forward to watching the series in six or so days around XMas break and seeing what I think of it then.
The characters were cool, the mechs were cool, the setting was alright and the fights were cool when they were there. The OPs and EDs were nice and I was never bored while watching the series. The alien thing was really the only thing I truly disliked, but oh well.

I'll take Eureka Seven and Rahxephon over it as a post NGE mecha series but I'm not going to be forgetting it anytime soon, and it didn't really deserve a lot of the hate it got, but annimay watchers can be tough to please.

now I just wonder what the number one fan of the show, kim k, thought of its wacky shifts???
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

Its strange because I think the dark hair red eyes red horns works better for Zero Two it plays to theme of classic hammer horror monster as I always felt that's what they were trying for with Zero Two that she is some kind of demon/monster but instead they lightened everything in her design trying to play up to bright Asuka type look, but for me the pink hair makes her look to comical unlike Rei in Evangelion who can pull the bright blue haired look off.

It looks like they had some serious potential there to make something actually unique and memorable, but then the show was basically focus-grouped to death. Look at 02. She seems to originally have been planned as a much more sinister character, with her unnerving blank expression and creepy-looking smile. Her horns actually look like demon horns too, as opposed to the show itself where they look more like cat ears (and given the way she acts, they might as well be). In other words, you can tell they were trying to make her scary, which could have changed her whole dynamic in the story. Instead, we got Asuka-lite.
The version of Darling in the Franxx hinted at by the concept art actually looks like it could have been a lot more interesting than the version we got. It always disappoints me when I see interesting or unique story ideas that were discarded in favor of "safe" ones, and Darling in the Franxx is no exception.

I'm just wondering is this one of those anime issues that's similar to the Hollywood issue like you can't have real looking women who have scars bruises, burns certain body sizes or age group or who might be blind or missing teeth, but in anime it's oh so she must be good looking and cute she's not allowed to look like a full on demon/monster even though that's the basis of her character's ark and theme because we want her cute and fuckable to both genders so you can shift mechanise.

The irony is I would have brought that design above as a statue because its awesome but there's no way I'd put the one they went for up on my shelf because why bother? If I want a hard core version I'll just buy another Asuka since I don't go for Asuka-lite..

Still picking at this scar...

Some third-hand reports from the Nishigori panel at the Crunchyroll Expo included two salient points.

1) it was his idea that Code002 should be a tall girl and so her original small design was repurposed for Hime
2) it was his idea that after all she had been through, the only way for Code002 to find happiness was to be reborn

The latter is an object example of letting the perfect be the enemy of the sufficient; and explains why it ended as it did.

*sigh* Alright, this genuinely pisses me off. I have several rather close friends with PTSD and this is a massive "fuck you" to them and to everyone who suffers from it. "Seen some bad shit? Yeah, fuck you, you'll never be happy again." To make matters worse, it's just plain not true.
