If I understood symby correctly, "moe" is the fancy new word for "Fetishism..."

Not quite. I remember Merri explained quite clearly why they are not the same. But what I could comment is that moe does not carry the same psychiatric stigma like fetishism and the vague feeling of adoration and protection is not conveyed that clearly if "fetishism" is used.

We have now started a thread focusing on MOE. You could go there if you want to discuss it further:

Still, from what I gathered before, it's possible that Kaworu finds Shinji moe. ("Your heart is fragile like glass. It is deserving of my sympathy")

If Kaworu was an anime fan, I am sure he would find Shinji moe

Had a curious thought about that. If many of us both find Shinji to be moe (or even sexually attractive, full stop) and identify with him, isn't there some narcissism in that? Not that it's necessarily bad, but it's kind of creepy, having feelings for what's intended to be your double.

Hah. :smirk:

Well, strictly speaking, I don't believe the point of moe is narcissism at all, though I see where you're coming from with that.

^Nadia's not moe. Nadia's just a bitch.

Well... I guess there were a few times she was moe. Only a handful, though.

I think it depends on whether you find the character moe because you identify with him, or whether the aspects of his character you can identify with are mostly unrelated or marginal in relation to his overall appeal.

There are two men in anime who are the sheer apex of moe, Kaiji (The Nobuyuki Fukumoto one) and Shinji.

On a more serious note: considering that moe can be pretty much anything ranging from things a majority of people find moe, "glasses, large breasts, clumsy girls, maid uniforms" to pretty much anything regardless of how obscure or weird it is. Yes, Shinji is technically objectively moe.

Shinji moe? Of course not! More like an anagram of that...

Well if we're trying to discuss whenever or not Shinji Ikari is moe, we have to figure what "moe" even is, since people in the anime community tend to use this word in different contexts. So I will be using the Tv Tropes definition: "It's a ill-defined otaku term that means, amongst other things, "cute", "huggable", or "endearing". While it's sometimes used to describe a series or the phenomenon called Perverse Sexual Lust, it's more about a specific ideal or kind of character, similar to Kawaisa. When used as an interjection, figuratively, it's used to convey that "something blooms inside your heart.

A common definition is that Moe is the ability of a character to instill in the audience an irrational desire to adore them, hug them, protect them, comfort them, etc. To evoke a sort of Big Brother Instinct, in men and women."

And while Shinji does indeed have some traits of being moe according to this definition, I mean, he's pretty attractive in a certain way, I wouldn't call him cute but I can see how people can see him like that. But ultimately it's difficult to really refer to Shinji as moe due to the nature of his character and how polarizing he is to the anime community at large. Because when someone refers to a character as moe, it's universally accepted that people find this character moe.
