Looks to me like this is in reference to Gainax's regional branch in Fukushima, as opposed to the parent Studio Gainax. Fukushima Gainax has been acquired and renamed.

I must admit that every time I read Gainax's name in a headline I fear it's gonna be about them shutting down, but then I wonder if it is something that I should even fear given their current state.

Ok so I first didn't really bother with this since "lol Gainax is still pretending to be alive?" after all the years of nonsense, but this is actually kinda interesting and substantial

First a quick recap of The Death of Gainax  SPOILER: Show
2006 August - Anno and his crew leave Gainax to found the highly successful Studio Khara

2011 August - Imaishi and his crew leave to found the highly successful Studio Trigger

2013 March - Yamaga announces Gainax is finally making Aoki Uru

2014 August - Khara loans Gainax 100mil yen

2014 October - Gainax's name starts disappearing from all Eva stuff including the official website. Eva is now owned by Khara and Eva Production Committee

2014 December - Detail about Aoki Uru hint at shall we say irregular financial approach: "Instead of the typical Japanese production committee, Uru in Blue will be produced by Uru in Blue LLP, a limited liability partnership comprised of various investors and partners. This LLP is based in Singapore, and they are currently seeking investors."

2015 January - Announcement of formation of Gainax Fukushima

2015 August - FLCL rights sold to Production IG

2016 March - Gainax West is set up in Kobe

2016 December - Khara sues Gainax for not paying up

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... es/.109396

2016 December - Yamaga post apology and notes "that Gainax has no capital ties to the companies Yonago Gainax, Fukushima Gainax, Gainax West, and other companies in Kyoto and Niigata, and expressed deep regret for how the December 2 news had caused worry for them"

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... it/.109563

2017 June - Tokyo District Court's Tachikawa Branch ordered Gainax to pay Studio Khara the 100 million yen

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... en/.117898

2017 June - Same day Yamaga is ordered to part with 100 million yen he also announces Aoki Uru will begin production after over 4 years of empty promises and nothing but bad news

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... th/.117938

A decade of downward spiraling since the first exodus of creative staff and then we have the subject of this thread

2018 August - Kinoshita Group Holdings buys Fukushima Gainax and renames it Gaina

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... me/.135673

At first I didn't really pay any attention to this because ANN's page on Kinoshita is useless and I didn't bother googling further since it sounded like more of Yamaga's shell company shenanigans.

So who is Kinoshita? Well, they're basically a giant bag of money and might be Yamaga's final salvation.

They're a giant industrial conglomerate who has made most of its fortunes in housing. Planning, construction, sales, renovation, furnishing, etc. Some articles describe them as a "life engineering firm".

Like a lot of giant Japanese corporate entities they eventually start to diversify and dip their feet into all sorts of other industries and one of those is entertainment.

They've been helping fund live action movies since 2006 and anime movies since 2008. At this point they've pitched in for all sorts of movies, from the yearly Precure and Kamen Rider event movies to small auteur driven live action that Japan sends to international film festivals.

They've only produced a few TV anime so far and all very recently:

Kado: The Right Answer, 2017 by Toei Animation
Eromanga Sensei, 2017 by A-1 Pictures
Blend S, 2017 by A-1 Pictures
Slow Start, 2018 by CloverWorks
Record of Grancrest War, 2018 by A-1 Pictures

But it seems now they want a more direct approach, as the article states:
Kinoshita plans to make its Tokyo-based Gaina subsidiary a pillar of its new anime production efforts in order to expand its business profile.

It seems that finally, after all these years there's actually some believable financial heft behind the latest promise of Aoki Uru coming out in 2022

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2 ... ct/.136482

What's interesting about this is that the August article states:
While Fukushima Gainax carried its former parent company's name, the original Gainax studio and Fukushima Gainax separated their capital ties and became independent companies in December 2015.

Yet the September news makes it clear that all the IP has been given over to the entity now owned by Kinoshita.

Personally I don't really care about Aoki Uru at this point since it will be nothing like what was promised in the 90s. It has become a mythical project that can not possibly match what people have imagined in their heads for over two decades.

New Top wo Nerae I'm slightly miffed about since Yamaga isn't the one that made the first two great. There was slight hope that if things carried on as they were that Yamaga would continue selling off old Gainax IPs to the people who should actually be working on them, but I doubt his new corporate overlords will let him do that. At the same time, I'm assuming those same new corporate overlords will be watching Yamaga very, VERY closely so that he doesn't mismanage their wealth and future prospects in the industry.

Gaina are currently producing Mori no piano, with Netflix having worldwide streaming rights from the off. The first cour broadcast last Easter (streamed by Netflix from September with 20 sub languages and eight dub languages), and the second (and final) cour starts in January. Presumably the deal with Netflix is helping fund this.
