One Punch has got something pretty good happening under the hood, and the scene of Mumen rider fighting the Sea King teared me up.

Nonetheless, the meat of what the series is doing is put out there right in the first episode, and it's really just hammering that point in. In order for a person to evolve, feel as if they own their life, they need conflict. As the story goes on, perhaps the most interesting it does is let on (in very subtle ways) just how much Saitama is being harmed by not getting the conflict he desires.

Beyond that, the manga has done what I thought was next to impossible and made comedy of errors funny to me.

You consistently have Saitama and the main-ish antagonist run into each other, and each time they don't know who the other is, and brush each other off (sometimes literally). And none of it seems forced or coerced because it's as if the entirety of the story has been written just to make these scenarios happen.

As if One started with these scenes, and wrote the rest of the story around them.

Not bad anime by any standard, but far more well know than you'd expect them to be.

Considering the trash that is dished out to us on a regular basis, I'd say those two shows are easily in top 10% of shows. A piece of fiction is ALL about execution, and in that regard, both of them shine.

I am going to get so much flak for saying this but when i think about it King's Game The Animation ain't so bad! Of course, depending whether deep down you have masochistic tendencies therein depends on whether or not you think so too.

I like it too! It' a good comedy! I'm not sure if the creators intended for it to be a comedy, but in the end it doesn't really matter.

Overall I think Mamoru Hosoda & his films are mildly overrated.
Technically him & his team are fantastic & his films always LOOK amazing but with one exception they always leave me feeling little to nothing.**

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - It has a stellar first act & a genius narrative setup - how the main character abuses time travel for the most inane reasons is a delight - but the film gets lost so lost in plot nonsense, unnecessary exposition & an inert romantic narrative in the second half that I ultimately found the film to be pretty but vapid.

Summer Wars - Another visual knockout - I loved the Takashi Murakami-esque look of the digital universe - but after setting up an interesting family story with heart in the first half the film completely loses me emotionally with all the big action set pieces & narrative hurdles the movie jumps through to make this one family the center of the universe.

Wolf Children is the one film of his I adore from start to finish. It's his one film that I would say his genuinely flawless with strong character work and a complete focus on story. I especially love how the two children themselves evolve throughout the story in unexpected, ingenious & completely relatable ways.

The Boy & the Beast - I truly dislike this film. Again, it looks great & the animation on a technical level is inspiring BUT the characters are one-note and the movie lacks a compelling story & heart. I saw it once in theaters and felt nothing despite great presentation and when I tried again on home video I only made it a half hour in before quitting. This film really supports my belief that Satoku Okudera - Hosoda's co-writer on the three previous films but not this - was the one who brought the heart to his work.

I'll still see Mirai of the Future when I get a chance - sans Evangelion 3.0+1.0 trailer I'm sure - and hopefully it will be more like Wolf Children.

**Looks at IMDB, sees he directed the first Digimon Movie & a One Piece movie. Haven't seen (nor really interested in) either since I've never watched an episode of either series so I can't comment on them.

I really didn't enjoy Wolf Children the way I thought I would and I normally love these kinds of stories because i enjoy the idea of sympathetic creatures who are misunderstood. What hurts the movie for me is Ame its not that he wanted to go and be a werewolf I was fine with that its the way he hurts his mother and sister to do it it comes across as so selfish and self entitled.

Even when his Mom almost gets killed to come after him he still doesn't stick around after saving her or even to visit and its just angers me more because Hana gives up and risks everything for her werewolf kids so it feels like such a slap in the face to her character because she clearly loves her kids more than anything. I wish Ame whole story had been framed differently to show more respect and a better separation, because this just stops it being an excellent movie and makes it a just a good one in my view.

Here's a heresy for you -- with the current state of the art, CG is perfectly acceptable for use in animation, and not just for purely mechanical things or backgrounds.

The third-hand reactions I've seen were to the effect that the 3.0+1.0 trailer came with a disappointing bonus feature. But that may just be audience selection at work.

oh oh.

I still ♥ Summer Wars and The Girl who leapt through time a whole lot. Also, the Digimon and One Piece movies are among the brightest moments of those franchises. I guess he really shouldn't have lost his scriptwriter.

I'm just gonna come out and say it Citrus is as bad as the ancient forgotten train wreck that was Destiny of the Shrine Maiden you know where one girl rapes another and they fall in love because men and women always fall in love with there rapists (Sarcasm) its utter yuri trash that has very few likeable characters and no re demining qualities and it doesn't get consent or boundaries and it didn't deserve to be made in to an anime period and its manga sucks just as bad...

So, I agree that his movies are somewhat overrated, but I personally don't feel nothing after watching them. But, yes, Wolf Children is his best so far.

I'd say this is indeed very true, but I think being overrated is a bit of a part of the territory if you're a big name anime director and it's less their fault than people who don't really watch too much anime putting these guys on these pedestals for whatever reason they choose, be it because they want to seem cultured or because they're not crazy about anime or they like the medium but don't dig deeper into it. I've loved a few of Miyazaki's flicks but dude is def overrated and ditto with Shinkai. I would be definitely fine with never being able to watch The Boy and the Beast, Ponyo, Laputa, 5CM per Second or Children who Chase Lost Voices again. They're all fine movies, but one time was definitely enough.

I love Summer Wars and Wolf Children's soundtrack is one of my favorite OSTs in anime(and I really love the movie up until the dad wolf croaks) but I don't see him as any more of a master than whoever directed SnK or Napping Princess or Love Live!!
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

Probably a very unpopular opinion: I think Pom Poko is one of the worst movies I ever sat through and is disappointing in almost every non-technical aspect (although Im not even sure about that, its been over a decade since I watched it)

This was one of the better things I got out of the movie actually. Overall it was just frustrating to watch, and the whole "humans are destroying the enviroment" thing was so in the face that even eight year old dense me got annoyed by it. Which is not exactly easy to achieve

I understand your feelings on this movie though I don't hate it, but the ending makes you wonder well why did they even try if the result was that it would amount to nothing and the complex would get built any way? It just feels like kind of a slap to the face, because you really feel and root for them but its all for nothing...

Miyazaki actually did the whole "save-the-earth" thing much better and with a lot more subtlety in his first movie, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

In hindsight, I will admit that the animation in Super is not that bad and that the Dragon Ball anime is not good but I still prefer 90s animation due to the art. Super's animation is not that bad but the art or at least the art in some episodes is not that good.

Visual Arts Key/P. A. Works totally sucks at making anime. Their only one gimmick is that “sad girls with big eyes” trope and it’s mostly implemented uncomfortably close to chauvinistic tendencies. (This one boi must save ALL of the hi skool gerlz!) If someone does like a show of theirs, it usually ends up being only the first ones of of theirs that they’ve encountered, and they would quickly grow tired of the reused tropes 2 episodes into the next show. For a lot of people, their first Key show was Clannad (I seriously couldn’t get past season 1), but for me, my first show of theirs is Angel Beats, and as a result it’s rhe only show of theirs that I can actually bring myself to enjoy. (It also helps that those chauvinistic tendencies aren’t as hard in that show.)
