I just wanted to chime in to say that I really, really approve of all the love Utena is deservedly getting. It's one of the great shows of the 90s.

I started watching How not to summon a Demon Lord... right now, it is walking the thin line betwen becoming a second KonoSuba and devolving into a complete and utter dumpster fire

The movies function on their own terms. If people can't accept them on those terms, and keep expecting them to be NGE, then they probably should have realized a while ago that they weren't going to have a good time. ~ Words of wisdom courtesy of Reichu

Go ahead and judge me for this one, IDC !
I just received the entire collection of Taboo Charming Mother DVDs and got started with the first episode. The action mostly revolved around solo play with a gift left at the front door by a prank caller and the stepmother who has the seiyuu who has been in many of the classic hentai that I admire so much (one of which is Bible Black) has such an attractive character design that you would think the husband would attend to her needs but then again, we wouldn't have a series of debauchery and kinkiness abound.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
I'm not all the way though this yet (Only ep2 currently) but I do like the darker take of the magic girl anime as one thing that has always put me off magic girl type anime, is I just find it kind of to light and fluffy its why although I liked Sailor Moon I never quite got on with it, but this maybe due to my personal taste as I do prefer my anime to be slightly darker and have consequences.
(Will edit this later)

Very kind of you to answer my literal cry for help there, Rob. Glad someone cares, if only in passing.
Ignore the seasonal crap and rewatch good stuff? That idea is so insane it just might work…
Do the cool kids still use MAL? I thought there was some kind of boycotting going on <shrug>
Gus, mah boi! You finally stumbled across some good rubbish for a change.
Are you watching subbed, or the terrigreat dub, full of dated topical humour?
So, rewatching stuff… I remember Re:Zero being entertaining although hardly fantastic. Figured I’d give it another go.
It remains one of the better looking and better animated Isekai titles, although my eyes may well need some adjustment after Death March.
This out of nowhere breaking of the fourth wall struck me as something rather awful:
Forgot that ever happened…

Thanks! I am watching the infamous dubbed version with Monica Rial doing a hilarious take on the ditzy teacher Shizuka who has the hugest boobs which get fondled by Rei and the sexy moaning of Takagi and Saeko when they splash cold water on each other. Good times!

PMM Madoka I like, though it has some melodrama, which it seems often happens with Urobuchi.

I feel similar... I still think about this one from time to time. Isekai ain't my favorite genre which is probably why I only watched it once (mecha 4 ever). I thought it was a pretty charming show, with some cool characters and nice comedy bits. I'm excited for season 2 whenever the hell that happens. Subaru isn't the best MC of all time, but his get up is alright and he's not unlikeable. I never did really understand the love for Rem and Ram, but who am I to judge? That one moment
SPOILER: Show

At the moment I'm rewatching Gunbuster for the 4th time. It's so easily Anno's best work outside of NGE (though Kare Kano started out so well...), with the fourth episode probably being the strongest of the series. I love in the fifth episode when Noriko is basically yelling about how the alien's shit is weak. Finishing up ep. 6 tonight, then it's on to Diebuster, which will be my first rewatch of it. Pretty stoked.

Magical girl shows fall into two buckets; one aimed at little girls and airing in morning or early evening slots, with a secondary audience of young men (PreCure being the standard example here --
SPOILER: Show
Although partly a sentai show, Sailor Moon is a part of the former bucket, whereas Madoka is squarely in the latter.
You may wish to try Princess Tutu as a show for little girls that also manages to get fairly dark; you might also want to look at Shinbo's previous outing in the genre, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha for an otaku-aimed take on the genre that is neither dark nor fluffy.

Part of the problem is that we don't really have any comparable genre outside of Japan (OK, so we have Steven Universe), so it's hard to tell the different varieties of it apart.

Just had the honor of watching the most impressive episode of Cowboy Bebop so far which is the 23rd called "Brain Scratch". Judy breaking character when her program with Punch gets cancelled got a lot of chuckles and the fact that Lord Zedd himself from O.G. Power Rangers voices the cult leader Londes with a spectacular performance makes the entire experience of him preaching to his followers about the traditional concepts about the afterlife being B.S. scared people made up to feel better but his concept of technology taking you to the great beyond is correct made me think I ought to check out Serial Experiments Lain which tbh I have never seen to this day .

You’re a funny chap, Gus.
Overlord S3E1- A fun, fluff start to the new season (by Overlord standards); no tiresome, overly long fantasy-world political discussions like those that bogged down season 2, just the quirky Nazarick crew going about their regular day.
This can only mean the rest of the season will be chock full of overly long fantasy-world political discussion…
Encouragement of Climb S3E2- The character animation looked a bit rubbery in this one; the first episode style seemed to match the quality of the previous season, so I can’t tell if this is a creative decision or just the result of a rushed production.
Perhaps unshaded, dodgy looking character art like ^this will help the scenic backgrounds look even more stunning by comparison?
Oh lordy, no.
Couldn’t finish the first episodes of ISLAND and Angels of Death. My tolerance/patience for nonsense to slowly make sense is at an all time low.
The comedy will be what makes or breaks this one.Blockio wrote:How not to summon a Demon Lord... right now, it is walking the thin line betwen becoming a second KonoSuba and devolving into a complete and utter dumpster fire
Yet another generic Isekai premise and setting? No thank you.

Back Street Girls episode 1
"Interesting" is putting it mildly given the situation the "idols" are going through. I would've thought the leering yakuza near the end would be dealt with throughout the main arc and not that quickly... Well, i wanted more of that so called trash tv and i am getting it!

^ Just got done watching the second episode and the girls are starting to get used to their new lives. The most lol moment was without a doubt when Chika's fellow yakuza stripped after a bunch of drinks and was shown with a Chika faced underwear!!! Also, i assumed that Airi was going to fall for the old man who used to drink with her back when she was still a man but it was still touching that the warmth she felt after so much abuse and the advice the old man gave her was in general.

Zoids Wild
Dear lord; that color pallet, that hair, that wooden dialogue...
Re-imagining Zoids as motorcycles/horses is cool, and the villains being into S&M is hilarious, but Zoids-as-Pokemon just doesn't work for me.
Angolmois: Genkou Kassenki
Historical anime about the Mongol invasion of Japan; and the main character is right in its path on the Island of Tsushima.
Honestly don't know how this will turn out, as I didn't quite catch what the year is; the Mongols invaded the island twice, lost once, won once.
No, don't tell me if you know.
It's not boring me; seems like the show is genuinely interested in breaking down battlefield tactics, though not entirely interested in showing them off wide-scale.

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now Bl
I just saw the trailer for that the other day and was just going nope this is a huge mistake...as there is a reason Chaotic Century and Guardian Force still hold up better than the follow up series it is because it's Zoids are more grounded in reality and it was not coy or joking about the war and battles.
Plus they keep giving characters in the new series super power ligers for no reason what's so ever and everyone's got a lightning saix even though its stated in the first series you have to be really good to piolt that Zoid as it has massive G force so it should be quite rare and a one off to see one in the follow up series.

Ghost Sweeper Mikami, eps. 1-19:
GS Mikami was a big hit back in the 1990s, spawning a whole slew of imitators within the "hot chicks busting ghosts" subgenre, and it's easy to see why: Takashi Shiina is really good at cranking out slightly comedic one-and-done adventure plots, usually built around some sort of chase situation or location-based setpiece, which is reminiscent of things like the original Dirty Pair. Mikami has that super-nineties aesthetic that's known to cause unexperienced anime fans to spontaneously combust, but I adore it, and I have to especially mention the colorwork. Since this was late cell animation, some poor bastards probably got cancer from fiddling with the paints and thinners, but it sure resulted in some striking pastel hues.
Another pretty striking thing is that while there's no shortage of useless male characters in anime, GS Mikami is absolutely militant about Tadao being a worthless horny idiot. Mikami, ever the cheapskate, keeps him around as a pack animal / meat shield because he's so horny that he'll happily take any amount of abuse, and the abuse is well-deserved. Well, at least he's not bland, but the situation makes me wonder if there's some SM subtext going on there, because Tadao truly is a pig, and he deserves the whip. In a long-running title such as this, one might think he'd undergo some very gradual character development and become less of a pig, leading to some budding romance with the hot boss, but after 19 episodes there's absolutely no indication that it's ever going to be in the cards, even though some episode-to-episode continuity is dutifully maintained. And if the show can keep up this same episodic energy, I'm not going to penalize it for not doing more.
Battle Athletes Victory:
A.K.A. the good Battle Athletes anime you should watch, A.K.A. sometimes second time's a charm
I've gushed about the early episodes earlier in this thread, and now I'm going to gush about the whole thing some more. Victory truly is an evolutionary product that refines what was good about the OVA into a joyous, bigger new thing. After a very strong start, its quality does dip a little in the middle when it has to redo the University Satellite arc that formed the entirety of the OVA, but it's building towards a purpose. And I have to say I was blessed to be able to go in blind after having seen the OVA, although the OVA is by no means required viewing. In fact, skipping the OVA can be recommended on the grounds that then the mid-part of the superior TV series won't have that whiff of a rehash, but for me personally, knowledge of the OVA turned the final arc of Victory into a thrilling twist ending.

SPOILER: Show
You see, the completely ridiculous intro sequence exposition dump of the OVA stated that a track and field competition was used to finally settle a long space war between humans and Warhammer 40k orks, and that's the reason why Space Olympics are now the hottest shit in all of human culture. But that was just backstory, mind you, and no aliens appear in the present day of the OVA. Then comes the TV series, with a seemingly different backstory justification for its space athletics. There's no mention of aliens anywhere, and one might assume it's just a case of a totally superfluous element from the OVA being smartly dropped. After all, Akari's story has a wider dramatic sweep now, and there's no need for such clumsy externalities to make it more "epic". But the absence of aliens stuck in the back of my mind. Something entirely original was clearly afoot with the coach character Mr. Miracle, but I assumed the show was simply setting up a standard familial revelation. A supposedly dead dad, a mysterious masked man... And I guessed that revelation correctly, but I still thought the TV series was just going to repeat the ending of the OVA, with Akari winning the final race and being crowned champion. And indeed, we arrive to this endpoint... but in episode 22, with four episodes still to go. Already from the beginning of this episode I was expecting a wham, and boy did I get whammed. Yes, it's time for you know who, and the true finale goes insanely over the top. I'm not going to spoil more, seeing is believing. Definitely one of the most memorable anime finales I've seen in a long time.

A Silent Voice
As someone who loves Evangelion because of how its handled depression, suicide and loneliness I have zero time for other animes/manga which don't hit the same mark and this is the first time I've seen a film come close to hitting that target. A Silent Voice is beautiful, honest pulls no punches when showing what it is to be the bullied and what its like to be the bully and how that mind set works and even has the guts to show the after match attempted suicide and how it effects people around you.
I also like that it high lights how you can't always see depression as with Shōya he showed anxiety but his friends are not quite seeing it and his family are horrified when they find his suicide note. While Shōko's is deeply hidden as she hides behind her lack of confidence and smiles and shyness and though the hints are subtle they are there as she feels like she's a huge burden on her family.
Also kudos to the voice team for not trying to make her voice normal when she finally does speak because it does sound like a true deaf person speaking which really carries the impact. I also like that this film shows interracial marriage which is so rare in anime and shows how cruel kids can be and though I know most won't agree with me on this I prefer this film over Your Name.
It just feels much more real and I really like that it has something to say where as Your Name in my view is doing outdated gender dynamics with out understanding what it really doing and plays of like some bad 80's body swap movie. Don't get me wrong Your name is not a bad film I still enjoyed it but I wasn't impressed or blown away by it where as A silent Voice I was.
