Even though it's been a while since the last release of the original series (excluding Japan), I was curious as to what specific release of Neon Genesis Evangelion other fans might prefer. Personally, I have (and love) the Thinkpack Platinum Perfect, but my friend has the older Perfect collection; he likes the original grain/stutter from Eva's earlier releases over the higher-quality platinum releases.

I personally love the 5.1 surround sound and clear picture quality of the remastered, but edited and altered editions (Renewal of Evangelion/Platinum Edition/Blu-ray Box), especially the Blu-ray Box.
But I prefer the original, unaltered editions (Second Impact Box/Perfect Collection/Archives of Evangelion DVD Box), even if they are of inferior audio/video quality since key moments work better in the unaltered versions than in the altered editions.

Plus, the unaltered editions don't look as bad as people make them to be.
Especially with Mjonlir Mark IV's AviSynth scripts for the Perfect Collection with the VHS subtitles and when you watch the unaltered editions on a CRT with Component cables.

Seriously, on an SD CRT (especially a Trinitron) with Component inputs, the Perfect Collection looks absolutely gorgeous, even if these unaltered editions don't look as good on LED/LCD/HD displays.
I may even dare to say that it probably looks more amazing than watching the Blu-ray Box on a 4K OLED TV.

This is a plus since I still have a Samsung CRT from 2009 which still works like a chap to this day.
I would rather watch the original, unaltered editions on my CRT than the remastered, edited versions on an Ultra HDTV.

Packaging-wise, I think the Laserdisc edition looks amazing. I just love the artwork and the fact that they are huge!
One of these days, I'm gonna buy them.
I actually own the Japanese Blu-Ray and Archives DVD. I love how compact they are - generally I'm a huge fan of super clean and slick design... I like to cool it Apple-esque. The only problem with those boxes is that despite being very cautious with them they are already covered in scratches, because of how delicate the packaging is.

In terms of subtitles and image quality, I don't really care, because I'm to lazy to actually play those discs nowadays.

I'm not familiar with every release, but of what I do know, I love the packaging of ADV's big ol' black and red box set with a stylized Unit 01 face shadow on the back and the NERV logo on the sides (I think it's called Perfect Collection? I should know this, it's the one physical release of Neon Genesis I have). I adore the poor audio and video quality of ADV's first releases, as it makes it feel more real and visceral, but the stuttering between every single cut is annoying as hell. If I could have it my way, I would just lose it over a VHS box set of Neon Genesis, and End of Evangelion, with that subpar audiovisual quality, but without the noticeable jump between each cut and shot.

The way I usually watch any Evangelion anything now is on my phone, where I have rips of all the Blu Ray releases of Neon Genesis, End of, and New Theatrical stored in one big folder on my micro SD (god it feels amazing to just HAVE my favorite anything ever on me at all times). Unfortunately, since they're the Blu Ray rips, it's super clean and high fidelity, which I feel takes away from the gritty, real feeling of the older releases.

I feel so strongly that audio and video quality can have an immense effect on tone and story in film that if I'm ever given the chance to direct my own film or series (which would be fucking incredible my the way), I plan to make it 4:3, 480p, with very slight film grain and ever so slightly distorted, muffled audio, with a VHS box set collector's edition release. Nothing pulls me out of Stranger Things more than being able to see and hear everything crystal clear. Because I grew up with 80s and 90s stuff and all of it was on VHS, the compression quality itself strongly effects my immersion and being able to tell when something is set. Sorry for the tangent.
*injects Angel blood* I know what the fuck an EVA is now :)

The Blu-Reis, followed closely by the pre-renewal release of Episodes 21'-24'.

If I am being very specific, I would say the fifth volume of the standard DVD releases of the show back in the day. A constant favorite was the scene where Toji and Hikari are talking about how he always eats at school and she offers to cook for him because she's got a not so secret crush on him. :D

The Blurays are very smart (but being perspex are extremely delicate and liable to scratches); but as a package I prefer my robust steel box of the Platinum edition (R2 version), which has individual DVD cases with all the cover pictures, a thick booklet with all the notes from the separate disks combined (synopses, glossary, and a load of other information) and a few additional prints - and of course it has English subs and dub.
