Someday I hope that we'll be reunited if that is what's destined to be. Perhaps we'll discover that elusive bible. And then we will finally be free!

It does, it kinda reminded me of what happened with Dragon Ball Super fights. The choreography isn't very good either, it doesn't have energy.
Problems could be lack of budget/time/experience or all three.
Either way the quality could vary and be better in other parts, and I don't think something like FLCL should be judged only by the animation, but this does make me less hopeful.

Pretty bummed that Toonami is going to hold off on release of the Japanese language versions of FLCL2+3 until November. I figured this would happen when the news started saying the sequel seasons would premiere in Japanese cinemas as movie events in September. If Toonami streamed/aired the shows in Japanese it wouldn’t be hard for Japanese audiences to have the entire series available to them and make the theatrical runs a non-affair.
I may hold off seeing these until November so I can properly experience them without the distraction of dubbing. I work with actors a lot and the “actors” used in the anime dubbing industry leave a lot to be desired.

Unless they are specifically told not the dubbing industry takes rampant liberties with translating anime. In the Japanese version Megumi Hayashibara is voicing the Haruko of FLCL.Progressive - Harahu Raharu - while the original squeaky voice actor for Haruko from the original FLCL - Mayumi Shintani -doesn’t return to play the character until FLCL.Alternative, the 3rd season. I think they’re supposed to be different characters with similar designs. The US dub meanwhile is just using the same actor across all three seasons and is calling the character “Haruko” which could change the meaning behind th usage of different actors to represent different characters. Too early to tell but quite a change from what the creators did nonetheless.
I’m reminded of the lazy mistakes/liberties taken with Neon Genesis in the original US dub and how they royally fucked up things in Episode 22 during Asuka’s mind falling apart in the confrontation with Arael. When I first watched the show in English years ago I wondered what was the point of the “none of this is the real me” sequence where the same three or four lines from Asuka are repeated about 5 times. It seemed pointless and just a lazy way to draw out time. It wasn’t until I watched the series in Japanese that I realized each time it went through Asuka saying the series of lines it was a different voice actress playing the part & imitating Asuka thus making the “none of this is the real me” actually substantial. The US dub? It’s just Tiffany Grant the entire time cause those Japanese all sound alike, amirite?

I've been watching the dub of the latest season on Adult Swim and I'm not especially impressed. I was ready to accept that it wouldn't be as good as the original but I told myself I'd try to enjoy the ride anyway. But this new season makes me realize how important Naota was to the chemistry of the show.
I used to think of Naota as a boring comedic straight man, but it's his creeping adolescent insecurity, hidden underneath an indifferent exterior, that made the show. I can remember relating to him — wanting to grow up quickly but feeling confused about what that means; wanting to seem cool, mature and in-control but feeling anxious and afraid.
I have no idea what to make of this season's main character. She's also emotionally distant, but in a way that seems artificial. She's very Rei-like, but this is not a good quality in the main character of a coming-of-age (or "beginning-of-adolescence") comedy. This season may focus more on the show's fictional universe — the Galaxy Space Police Brotherhood, Medical Mechanica, Raharu, the Pirate King, NO channels, etc. — but I never took much interest in this aspect of the show. FLCL 1 was great because it captured a feeling — yearning for adulthood while simultaneously fearing it. I don't see that in FLCL Progressive; not yet, anyway.
Anyway, I still have hope that everything will come together in the end. I try to tell myself that FLCL 1 didn't make any sense to me the first time I watched it, but it had...something that's missing from this season.

I've watched 3 Episodes. There are moments, that are as strong as the entirety of FLCLassic. Sadly, they are just moments. The pillows are underutilized - almost no orgasmic uses of blasting choruses accenting climaxes. The design work and script are quite nice, the shots are dynamic, but the actual animation lacks big time.
FLCLassic was this coalescence of music and beautiful visuals that washed over me, and had staying power due to competent writing and soul in its production.
Progressive aims to emulate that, but clearly lacked the time/manpower to make it look as should and expertise to make it music-videoy.
Overall I still enjoy it, and I can't begrudge them for trying, because this is no Sailor Moon Crystal situation. But it's sad. I feel like if they had half a year to polish what they've got here, it could have been amazing.

I haven't caught up watching this yet (following my enforced non-streaming or download period, aka holiday in deepest nowhere), but while getting organised I note that the title of episode 5 (Fool on the Planet) is the same as that of the greatest hits compilation album (and its new title song) issued by The Pillows some time after their success with FLCL.

I saw the first episodde of Alternative yesterday (I think they're airing it on Adult Swim now), and I like it more than I did the first episode of Progressive. One of the biggest things that struck me was that while there are signs that Kana is just as much of a negative character as either Naota or Hidomi, she is more proactive than the other two leads, which makes her a lot more likable.

What were people's overall verdict on this? Glancing at the summaries, both seasons seemed...bad in the sense of not living up to the original.

They definitely did not live up to the original in any way. I'd give Progressive a strong 2, and the one Episode I've seen from Alternative a strong 6. For comparison, the original is a perfect 10 in my book.

These are just my thoughts but:
Progressive has a few strong moments - most of the episodes open well and there are a few wonderful bits of animation like all of Episode 5 - BUT the whole Season gets lost because they're trying to be "wacky" like the original without knowing exactly what they're trying to say. Becomes a mess by the end that doesn't fulfill the initial promise offered.
Alternative is actually really enjoyable and well-written as a low-key spin-off of FLCL but it's so low-key that not much about it sticks. I still enjoyed it though and would love to revisit the third "Season" when I can hear the Japanese performers.
I don't think either is a disaster and "hurts" the original. Honestly, if the new Seasons weren't made on an obviously thinner TV budget I'd be open to the idea of letting new filmmakers do standalone FLCL things once every couple of years with the only unifying character being Haruko.

Finally watched these:
FLCL Progressive: This probably didn't even need to be a sequel to FLCL, but it still works. It's carried quite a bit by it's wonderful animation(particularly episode 5, like Gendo'spapa mentioned) but I don't think animation is it's only strength. The calmer mood gives a distinctively different feel, and helps it stand apart from the original FLCL and it's even calmer third part.
FLCL Alternative: Not nearly as visually impressive as Progressive, this one stands out through its fun character dynamics(from witch come the best comedy moments of these sequels) and generally just being better written in my opinion.

Also, the soundtrack for both anime is really good.

I haven't gotten around to watching Alternative, but I'd struggle to give Progressive anything more than a 2. The original was work of passion that also caught lightening an a bottle and became one of the master pieces of animation; while the sequels are cynical cash grabs borne out of the incompetence of the people leading Gainax, the juvenile narrow-sighted love from Adult Swim officials and people driven by greed on the side of Production I.G. All of them guilty for not understanding the appeal of FLCL in the first place.
Granted, the disgusting meta of its creation might bother me more than other people, but fact of the matter is, it's just not good. Granted, Progressive has its moments, like the start of Episode 1 and parts of Episode 3; but it's clearly written with a check box of superficial ideas what FLCL is about in mind instead of telling a cohesive and engaging narrative. The cast often explains the point, when part of the appeal of the original was its mastery in show - don't tell. I like the character designs, but the animation is so cheaply put together most of the time it's an eye sore to watch. Which is especially insulting, considering that the original is a masterwork of animation in General. The music is great - at least the few songs the Pillows contributed - but how about using music the staff is passionate about?
Going in I hoped for a situation like Gunbuster and Diebuster in which the next generation of brilliant creators create their labor of love; instead we got a listless shitshow.

I think the opinion people have on these sequels depends a a lot on how much one likes the original FLCL. Make no mistake, I like the original, and it's clearly superior to these sequels, but I think it is reductive to call them cash grabs. While the people that made the sequels aren't the dream team at golden age Gainax, I don't doubt for a second that there were plenty of talented and passionate individuals working at both sequels. Would these people have been better served making an original anime and not sequels? Certainly, but we can't do much about that.
I also disagree strongly about the animation being cheaply put together. I think both sequels are well animated, and I'd even argue Progressive is worth watching for its animation alone, if one is a big sakuga fan.
