It shouldn't have come as any sort of surprise. The way the series has been set up, it wouldn't have made sense for her not to be.

She didn't get full Asuka'd like δ and ε were. It looks like she may be doing what females of her species do, and is now the ghost in the Strelizia. Either that, or she and hime are doing the full Lalah Sune now.

2nd week in a row that dialogue from the ep has captured my sentiments about it. About a Hail Mary come from behind:
SPOILER: Show

But hey:

Not saying it won't succeed, but I'm not going to get hung up on this for the next 3 weeks. Another special program episode better not air again.

Next ep is both sides regrouping, then a 2 part finale.

It still comes off as the most genuine and solid of the relationships, such that it can remain platonic and still work.

I just finished watching Ep 21 aliterally a minute ago, and all I can say is "This is what I watch for." Great audio and visuals, well-made action, some realy sweet moments and reliving Eva without actually watching Eva.

I was about to say "how in the world are they going to fill the next three episodes", but on second thought, there is enough material: Alpha has obviously lost all faith in Papa, Mitsuru/Kokoro, whatever exactly happened to Zero Two and Ikuno, and maybe more VIRM

And I'm fine with that, their romance doesn't need to be complex.

But what is this show about then?
How many times in this show have we heard about that bird that can only fly in pairs, like an encapsulating metaphor for the series.
If the relationships don't turn out to be complex, the show will really be left to be shallow.

The way the series has been set up, it wouldn't have made sense for her not to be.

I was in denial and hoping it wouldn't go there.

I’ve only watched up to 20, and I won’t be able to watch 21 until July. Still, re Hiro: he and Zerotsuu have by far the most developed back-story (next is Mitsuru I guess), and while his memory being taken reduced his leadership qualities, it was still him who went exploring when they revisited the Garden, for instance. Then he recovered his memory with Zerotsuu as well. So yes, I am interested to see how he and Zerotsuu get back together, how their journies towards humanity and saurification work out, and what their natures will end up meaning for the world as a whole.

The protracted finale nobody asked for, Episode 21,

SPOILER: Show
starts off by aliens casually instrumentalizing all the humans, except for some they kind of forgot, who also conveniently happen to remain important to the plot. Logical.
Then they go full on Wikipedia and explain the plot. Gripping.
One of the 9s get eaten in an overly gruesome way, that made me laugh. Definitely a high-point of the Episode. Funny.
This fuels the other 9s with the power of rage, and makes them stronger. Emotions.
After this everyone works together to escape from Klaxosaurs who come at them at high speed. Oh no.
Then the energy of one of the mechs runs out (so this can be a thing, huh) to create dramatic effect. :0
Thankfully the Klaxosaurs suddenly decide to slow down, to give the Episode enough time for forced drama. Phew!
Also, all the other pilots are now written out of the show. Convenient!
Meanwhile Klaxobitch and MC proceed bondage porning while proclaiming what his arc should have been. Sadly, we never got to experience it, so I'm glad they decided to tell us that too!
Then zero two rides the huge snake penis into a huge vagina wherein she gets squirted out into a hole like semen. Sexy!
ZeroTwo decides that this is the right time to use magic, so the ghost of Klaxobitch suddenly embraces empathy and decides to help her by ramming her blue horns into ZeroTwo's red ones. Thus they fend of the invaders, kill off dr. FranXXenstein (whoops). Also, ZeroTwo is dead... or is she...?

And thus the farce of an Anime, that perfectly encapsulates what people who hate Anime think Anime is like, continues....

View Original Postkuribo-04 wrote:A question (and it is genuine): Is anybody invested in the relationship between Hiro and Zero Two at all?
...
Zero Two has lost complexity little by little, leaving her to be le anime waif.

Lol, nope. I still kinda like ZeroTwo, but Hiro has always been the worst kind of bland MC.

At first I was kinda into the show, warts and all. Then it became an extremely fun hatewatch (haven't experienced that ever before) Now I'm just sad, by how many people are genuinely into this. But I've come so far and I just can't drop it so close to the finale.

View Original Postkuribo-04 wrote:I feel genuine disgust toward the idea of Kokoro apparently being pregnant

Why? That's one of the few slightly interesting parts.

Because this "let's keep watching so that I can complain about everything" attitude is toxic as fuck. Like, "the kind of people capable of sending death threats to the staff for daring to make a show that's not a masterpiece" levels of toxic.

Not nearly enough smut for that. Not even a good tentacle rape for your time.

Hiro has always been the worst kind of bland MC.
Not so much bland as passive -- you know your MC has problems when people start comparing him unfavourably to Shinji.

I just can't drop it so close to the finale.
It ends with Hiro restoring life and fertility to the Earth by dropping Hringhorni down the Grand Crevasse, and then he stands in the rain to give his dinowife a proper name -- Honey. Now you can save yourself three weeks of anguish.

As I said, I can't... I feel like it would make the time investment be for naught. I don't think I've ever watched so much of a show I hated that much. But it is a special kind of train wreck. It wasn't even that bad until... 15, or so? And even after that the trash factor was pretty amusing. But it got worse every week, and since 20 I feel I need to vent.

Couple things I wanna adress:
I don't think robersora is being toxic. Your (robersora) approach to criticizing the show is much more "agressive" than mine, but complaining about a show is something valid to do, doesn't mean you have to stop watching it.
Sending threats to actual human beings over a show is a couple steps above that.
And at the end of the day...it's just a show.

@Tines: I have often thought about why I don't drop things. When I have the feeling I can't, I can't. I trust my gut on that. For some reason I wanna finnish Franxx. I think it's becoming worse, but it's interesting seeing why.
Also, it has Imaishi animation sometimes and can be pretty entertaining.
(I hope your prediction for the ending is true lol)

@robersora:
The reason the Kokoro thing is so disgusting to me is it'll be portrayed in a positive light, the first naturally born child in forever, ignoring how effed up it is for a young teen to be pregnant, that coupled with how exaggerated the fanservice could be in this show gives me weird fetish vibes that make kinda uncomfortable.
I'm really being genuine when I say I felt a little nauseated at the idea.

Anyways...anime sure is fun huh.
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."

Also, I think the opposite is true, actually.
Looking away when shitty stuff goes down, because you don't like it is the mentality Austria embraced when the Holocaust was in full swing.
I know it's just a show. But if we want media that doesn't treat its audience like mentally challenged people we need to call that out.

Also, I've just been chronicling how lazy and dumb the moment to moment writing is... I didn't even cover the proto-fascist ideology this show keeps on happily selling to us.
No, co-dependency is not awesome;
no, people who cannot procreate for whatever reason are not worth less;
no, you can't do the Shonen trope and include the rival into the cast, and let him be our friend without any retribution whatsoever, when he was actively torturing and killing people.

Young folks watch that show, and presenting themes like that as if they are awesome is the real toxicity here.

View Original Postkuribo-04 wrote:And at the end of the day...it's just a show.

If only a couple adults would watch, I'd agree... but many, many impressionable teenagers soak up this inhumane, disgusting world view in the process of watching "cool robots"
(which aren't even that cool, because the animation department doesn't care any more)

[whoops, I totally overlooked there was a part of Kuribo's post that wasn't important for my reply, thus it's REDACTED]

I'm not against that myself. I mean, I don't know if it's due to an economic downturn in Japan or something, but recent mecha anime just... they feel like there's no soul in them anymore. I know that as products of the entertainment product kind, they're meant to make money - but when an entertainment product focuses more on making money rather than entertaining, we have a problem.

Yes, Franxx has its problems. But yes, I still enjoy it. Why? Because unlike way too many anime nowadays, it dares to experiment rather than falling back to the lowest common denominator of harems with featureless male protags meant as an audience surrogate and undefeatable isekai heroes whose strength removes any kind of tension from the story in favor of yet more harem antics. Playing it safe for minimal but assured returns might please the investors, but it sure as hell isn't going to please the customers.

The problem with Hiro, I think, is that he's not distinct enough for a classic protagonist, but at the same time not generic enough for an audience surrogate protagonist. He's like a walking golden mean fallacy.

Besides... calling out a story for its faults is one thing, but doing so at a noname forum none of the A-1 staff ever heard of, let alone visited just... kinda defeats the stated purpose.

Aside from Gundam there's barely any mecha anime at all these days and what little there is is mostly 3D nonsense. Darling is pretty unusual in that it actually has drawn mechs and is of a decent length. Last 2D mecha anime I recall was that weird Regalia(was that the name?) thing were lolis were pilots or something. It was not good.

Also, I'm just going to say I disagree with nearly everything robersora said in his last posts, big surprise there I'm sure.

In fact, unless the ending is complete shit, expect my final thoughts on this show to be extremely positive.
Going by the opinions on this forum and what little I've seen from other places opinions on Darling are at this point:

-The show is shit
-The show was initially good but became shit at some point, episode 20 having been one of those points
-The show was good but is now worse, altough still not bad
-The show is really good

I feel like the last opinion is only held by a couple of people at this point.

My review of Darling is probably going to be super short, despite how much I like it, I'm bad at writing.

The Gainax spirit is still alive - all those people are just not focusing on making Mecha any more.
Flip Flappers, Kyousogiga, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Trigger, Yuri on Ice come to mind...

Just because it tries to do better than the rest in some areas doesn't change the fact it fails spectacularly at it.
This show might at least not be another isekai trash, but it's still a sad parody/excuse of/for a Gainax show.
The MC is still bland mc nothing... I have no idea what his personality is, because he has none.
The writing in the last two Episodes consisted of info dump after info dump. A show that actually tries to be good would avoid that at all costs.

I mean compare FranXX to Evangelion. That's the standard they should strive for. It's been more than 20 years and there still hasn't been one contester!

No it doesn't because if I help spreading the idea, that less and less people are willing to accept this onslaught of shit every season and stop giving their money, the market eventually will be forced to rethink their practices.

@Justacrazyguy
I love the mech designs, and its nice to actually see some animated in 2D nowadays. (even if most of the time the fight sense were near incomprehensible)
But that doesn't change all the other stuff that's in the show. If you like the show, that's ok. I just hope I could communicate, where I'm coming from.

I don't know how recent it is honestly. But in current society I know it is effed up, and Franxx is being released into current society.
