There are many sites that you can provide suspicous links to, and that then investigate the matters further.

This is really off-topic, so she would we move this somewhere else?
(Because @pwhodhes: I'd like to know if I understood your message correctly and just having these images displayed on your screen, even if involuntarily, is seen as a crime, because that would make no sense and would be counterproductive to catching predators)
Shinji: "Sooner or later I'll be betrayed... And they'll leave me. Still... I want to meet them again, because I believe my feelings at that time were real."
Ryuko: "I'm gonna knock ya on your asses!"
-Asuka: THINK IN GERMAN!!! -Shinji: Öh... Baumkuchen...
Hayashida: "As game developers, our work is special. All of us here can put smiles on very many people's faces with our work."

Involuntary display may not be handled as a crime, I imagine. In the case of someone investing suspicious activity on a server, the display could be argued to be deliberate, though for an innocent purpose. But the law contains no exception for those circumstances, which is why the official advice was so severe.

Yes, it could be argued to be counter-productive, and it may be that case law and experience has softened the handling of this. The advice I described was given about five years ago, and I am no longer in that information chain.

Hey, I was just joking about the FBI thing! I don't seriously think I'll be considered a dangerous pedophile for accidently seeing unnapropriate pictures on the internet while searching infos on a giant robot anime. Wait... what was that noise ?

Well, that would play into the UK's rule of law "Guilty until proven innocent" where the accused would have to prove they were simply investigating the issue and no harm was meant. Though it is counterproductive, because how do police handle the investigation,or how is the evidence displayed when simply displaying it is a crime? The law asks more questions than it answers

And now I smell toast...

Voted in college to be Most likely to Take Over the World, how to do that however, will require at least Four Evangelions. Thanks for the idea Misato-san!

Of course, UK law still plays by innocent until proven guilty. But by reporting the result of an investigation of illegal images of child porn we provide the proof of our guilt (because the law as written doesn't include an exemption for investigation). This is a fine example of the law being an ass, though, and in practice it is not an issue; but we are all aware of instances (on both sides of the ocean) in which an over-zealous application of the law has caused embarrassment all round. The guidelines, however impractical, are intended to provide protection against that.
