At Shinji's age I see him as even more disillusioned yet not quite irredeemable. Something probably happened to him at Shinji's age that turned him into the "brusque, standoffish loner who gets into fights." Maybe he was bullied relentlessly as a kid, or maybe his parents were shittier to him than he was to Shinji, or maybe he had his heart broken, and he found the world itself to be irredeemable. Any or all of those explanations make sense to me.
What do you think Gendo was like at Shinji's age?
