When I went up to Cambridge in the mid '70s he was being rushed into the Lucasian professorship because they didn't think he'd last long enough to take it up at a more traditional age.

I can't find anything.

Note that it is suggested that the small proportion of ALS suffers in which the disease affects non-motor neurones are though to be more likely to develop dementia - but Hawking's mind rather discounts that possibility. Still, it might have led to someone jumping to an unjustified conclusion.
