Don't you mean DBZA salvaged it? And I wouldn't say absolute garage, just dragged on for too long especially the fights against the main baddies. GT however was far worse.

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions
I think the problem I had with attack on Titan is the bleakness like its super depressing and its not the deaths that got to me its that it has zero truly fun moments to break the darkness and I feel in anime these are so necessary when you have that level of darkness and though it tries to do funny jokes I didn't find them funny.
Like to shout at someone for eating a potato in the training line is kind off funny but then the joke takes itself to far in that she's punished in to running until till she almost dies and they try to throw in an offside joke off her leaping on some girl holding bread so she can eat it because being staving to the point of animalistic is so funny right? Its like they were going for black comedy but they took it way to far and past the point that it becomes funny.

I'm totally on board with this. Attack on Titan was so edgy and grimdark, with the occasional quirky moment (haha potato girl lol teh randumness XD) it's no wonder it became crazy popular with 13 year old kids. I think that the concept behind it, although stale and overdone (see: The Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, Divergence etc), is really strong- the remainders of humanity forced into a cage by mysterious giants, live peacefully. Until one day, an enormous, insanely powerful giant fucks their shit, and humanity is forced to retreat inwards. Shit really hits the fan when

Do yourself a favor and never learn Japanese, since the version of Japanese spoken in most Anime sounds about as cringy/unnatural/wrong as their American counterpart.

I still like Gundam Wing. But from everything I've read about the franchise it's . . . decayed in recent years. Like people seem to hate it nowadays. Did it really not age that well?

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions
I don’t understand Japanese, and I can tell the Japanese dubs can make one cringe from time to time. My issue with the English dubs isn’t that the actors are inferior, but that the placement for each individual syllable sounds just unnatural enough to fall into a linguistic Uncanney Valley. Say what you will about the annoying vocal characterizations given by Japanese anime voice talent or American Spongebob performers, but the words seem to leave the mouths of the characters in a way that has a natural rhythm to it. The Looping process in foreign dubs, on the other hand, is a process that will inherently create an environment in the recording booth that interferes with the dialogue’s natural rhythm, and only work in ADR situations where an actor is trying to lip-sync his own dialogue in a live-action movie, forcing it to match the natural rhythm he had already set in the original film footage. And it’s not just a problem with anime either. English dubs of Godzilla movies have had this issue since the 50’s.
This is the only real issue I have with English dubs, and also the only reason why I find the English dub of Cowboy Bebop dub tolerable. It’s not that Steve Blum had a better sounding voice than everyone else, but it’s that his natural-sounding speech rhythm seemed less affected by the Looping process than everyone else’s dailogue cadence.

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions
Aside from whether the delivery is natural (which I guess is harder to judge in a language one doesn't know), the sync with the image can vary. In some productions, the sync is at least as bad in Japanese as one expects it to be in English...

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions
I'm not talking about lip sync, but rather dialogue rhythm. I generally don't care if the voice doesn't match the lip animation perfectly. But I do care if the natural cadence of the sentence is being compromised in order to make the lip sync with the animation. I can tell when an actor is intentionally speaking slower or faster than normal in order to fit all of a sentence in lip animation, and it bugs me. I'd almost rather they ignore the lip animation all together and just speak more naturally. Original dialogue, English or non-English, doesn't have that issue, since many original productions let the actors speak at a natural speed for the dialogue given. There's a scene somewhere in the original NGE where Ritsuko pauses in her speech before gong on to the next thought. The lip keeps flapping, but the original actress didn't care, and just let the pause happen despite the continued lip movement. It sounded great and I never noticed this until the 15th time I saw the show. The English dub, sadly, sacrifices that natural cadence for a mechanical delivery calculated to fit all of the syllables in the lip flaps, and it sounds less-than-stellar. sometimes it's just beast to let the voice talent try things apart from what the animation dictates. English dubbers can't seem to grasp that notion.

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions
Yea, I get that - I thought I'd made that clear enough. In fact I'm not as sensitive to poor lip sync as my wife (being deaf is an issue there, actually); but when it's as bad as in the last couple of (Japanese) episodes of Black Clover (don't judge me!), things are really going to pot.
How often are the lip flaps finalised after the original dubbing to make them fit? I seem to remember that was a big deal with one of the famous films (Akira?, Nausicäa?), but since then I've seen contradictory accounts.

It was definitely Akira that used the technique of basing the lip flaps around the dialogue (known as "pre-scoring"). There's even an interview with director Katsuhiro Otomo that discusses it (right at the start of the video, so you don't have to go too far).

Wedding Peach is not a Sailor Moon ripoff.

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions
Sailor Moon remake is good, excellent graphics and it is a bit closer of the manga, Toyko Ghoul is not that good, it tries too hard particularly.
SAO was only good until the first season got ruled over by romance, I do not like Lacus Clyne, she seems too perfect for me, I prefer Sasuke to Naruto, Code Geass was good until the second season, Haruhi Suzumiya was not that good, the endless eight...the endless eight!!!!
Akame Ga Kill is horrible, dogs raping girls in a scene, soon after transition, highlighted Harem Hijinks.
Just WTF.
I will remember others controversial opinions soon.

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions
I wonder if there's any correlation between a person's view of the endless eight and their view of being dragged into Shinji's mind in Q?

Indeed. Unless he was talking about the manga, which I think was better received, right?(But I guess this isn't "Controversial Manga Opinions" heh).
I did actually pretty much enjoy that series, on a good day I'd probably give it a 7/10. Judge me how you will...

I really don't think One Punch Man is interesting at all, I get the conflict is internal but that still doesn;t stop from being boring. Ditto for ONE's Mob Psycho, it feels like the same premise but with psychic powers.

^^^
I think the reason One Punch Man and Mob Psycho are well regarded is mostly due to the excellent animation. Other than that, all you have is a decent story(a bit above average in Mob Psychos case) and a couple good comedy moments. Not bad anime by any standard, but far more well know than you'd expect them to be.

Re: Controversial Anime Opinions Bl
Too much beam spam, politics of the setting are bone-headed stupid, character motivations left me rooting for someone to choke a bitch (KILL RELINA, HEERO, DO IT GOD DAMN NOW!), series ends by logic equivalent to " a wizard did it" for there were no more wars after the Gundams were destroyed.
I trade off between whether it or AGE is the harder series to watch. AGE looks better, but I think it's more intentionally stupid (for the kids), and I didn't actually finish it.
It's strange, as G Gundam put a lot of what we see in Wing into motion, and I absolutely adore the former... maybe G Gundam's more campy atmosphere is what better sells it?
