You'd think Kaji is dead, but he was in instrumentality...

So does that mean Kaji is alive?
And just how long do you have to be ded 4 to stay ded?
Just a big bro looking out for sistah

Mess with this crew, and I'll give you a blister

Metaphysics, son.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

I tend to think of RQ as really not being limited by time of death, really. We see her appering to Ritsuko and Misato, both of whom died at least half and hour-ish before 3I began. So why couldn't she go back a few weeks earlier to harvest Kaji's soul?

This does bring up the problem of who she *chooses* to harvest or not, unless she just harvests anyone. Potentially, this could include all the three billion people dead after 2I, or even before that.

Do we have any real reason to think that souls in NGE are immortal, though?

Well, don't they last an indefinite time in the chamber of Guf before use? And Lilith's and Adam's seem pretty resilient, even surviving being split. And the background of Buddhist reincarnation surely requires the soul to be immortal.

That's not quite the same as souls lasting an indefinite amount of time under regular conditions (e.g., sitting around in a rotting carcass on the material plane).

And the background of Buddhist reincarnation surely requires the soul to be immortal.

Not sure what you're referring to here. Brings the manga to mind, but we're not talking about the manga.

During Third Impact, when everyone is getting turned into that delicious orange flavoured goop, there's a shot in one of the hallways of NERV that shows a soldier's severed arm clutching a walkie talkie, with the end of his arm being reverted to LCL. The shot cuts to a wider view of the hallway, pans up, and is filled with uniforms of NERV personnel and soldiers, all surrounded by and filled with, LCL. This confirms that anyone who was ever alive was converted into LCL and was able to join Instrumentality.

"Everyone who was ever alive"? Not hardly. The recently deceased? Yes.

Perhaps only those who's bodies still remained? But then, when a body breaks down, it doesn't completely change, it's still the same basic elements but at their very lowest, most basic level... I wonder if this means every living thing in Neon Genesis has a soul?

That appears to be the case, yes.
