And she knows it in the manga. There is a scene, where she complains to Ido, that if she wanted to express her feelings for Hugo with "her whole self", she would hurt him. Que her fingers clenching in frustration... And tearing giant, steel pipe she was leaning on.

Yeeaaah... Emotional hugs may be a bit hazardous.

I don’t understand why they made the main characters eyes so massive, I mean, they kinda creep me out. I know this is an anime film, but that dosen’t translate into live action very well at all!

3rd trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3D2vmWD88w

I am liking everything I am seeing except the corny teen romance lines.
At this point I like the big eyes, CGI looks solid to me especially that shot of her spreading the blood on her face.

This movie might be good or bad but I couldn't stand those eyes for more than thirty seconds, holy christ.

I expect this to bomb.

Am I imagining this or are the eyes in this trailer already a lot less uncanny valley esque?

I’m sure the initial teaser or whatever had some half-finished effects and/or was mainly to gauge audiemce’s reaction to those wacky looking peepers. Either way, adjustments were made based on that reaction.

It looks better, but I don’t know if it looks good.

EDIT: it’s laughable that everyone in the first half of the trailer is reacting in some extreme fashion to her mechanical hand, when the real distracting element to her visual presence are those enourmously inhuman eyes.

I had the same problem and I had this issue with Mars Needs Moms, it looks to glassy to unrealistic and I can't fix on the characters emotional response because there eyes just look soulless therefore I have real difficulty connecting with them.

I really don't think that her eyes look that CGI-esque. I mean yeah, they look unrealistic, but overall I feel like they are much better integrated than the Pokemon are in the Detective Pikachu movie.

That's actually why they're horrifying. If Detective Pikachu looks too much like a real animal he'd be the same.

They need to look more fake.

hmmm... Maybe I was so horrified by the eyes in the first trailer, that the uncanny valley effect just doesn't strike as hard for me in this trailer.

Those eyes are certainly a choice.

The Alita effects have certainly improved from the original teaser but this movie is going to live or die by how the effect works in the overall film. I’ll say this, while it’s still unnervingly uncomfortable in some shots - “I just lost track of time” when she’s talking to Christoph Waltz - it works in others - her downward gaze towards Mahershala Ali & all the “you underestimated me” material. I think the effect might work if they embrace dynamic camera angles - lows, highs, push ins, etc - but I do think basic mediums or two shots won’t work entirely.

I’m intrigued. Not sold. Certainly more intrigued than I was by Ghost in the Shell or any of the other previous Hollywood anime adaptations.

Very spoilery International trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puKWa8hrvA8
Makes it clear they are being a lot more faithful then expected. Watch at your own risk.
I am sold. Really hope this does well.

I enjoyed it. Visually it's well realised - especially in IMAX. Beautiful 3D PG "ultraviolence". I can't really review it because I'm familiar with the source material - but it makes a big effort to get as much of the big "Alita" coolness in for people to enjoy. The beauty of a preview screening is that I can finally enjoy a movie for six whole days before the internet tells me why it's shite and I should hate it.

And that a few of the scenes the movie added to flesh out the background or introduce concepts - I enjoyed.

One or two things bugged me, but they're minor little things. The critics are already condemning it for changing gears a bit too often and trying to get too many 'Alita' elements in - or just plain not being deep enough into the usual 'cyborg' tropes you expect from a cyberpunk flick but at the same time, of the people I know who've seen it none have gone home dissapointed.

It's not as dull, dark and lifeless as the OVA. I hated it when I tried to rewatch it and I enjoyed the Manga. It's energetic and fun and looks amazing onscreen.

I wont make sweeping statements like, If you liked the Manga, you'll like the film. But everyone I've spoken to who's seen it has enjoyed it. Like I said - I've six days to be happy before the misereable dicks on the internet who ruin things by telling me why I have to hate them get their teeth into it.

And it's not Last Order. Which bored the hole off me wandering around itself. I think I finished that but after so many pages of 'Your Princess is in Another Castle' and a book or two of vampires, I just sort of lost interest.

I saw it. Good, but not great. The story felt rushed and yet incomplete. The visuals were fantastic- one of the rare times 3D was worth it, it really enhances the film and it’s very subtly done.

I was afraid the eyes would actually make me leave the movie early (I am not a fan of creatures with big eyes) but the finished effect actually made her more sympathetic despite making her alien.

Definitely one of the best *looking* movies of the year so far, but not my favorite of 2019.

I saw this last night I really enjoyed it way more than I thought I was going to and I will say I got used to the eyes in this after a while. Its a deeply enjoyable romb with some real nice character building at Alita's end she's what makes this film work as she never feels like a stereotype and she feels like a real living breathing person who you want to root for despite the CGI. This film also get's the human condition way better than the Ghost live action ever did and this really helps carry it and yes I won't deny there are a few 90's vibe cheesy moments but this is worth it for the fight scenes in the second and third act as they are just really brutal and cool in places and they do capture that anime/manga feel.

SPOILER: Show
Side note this film has the guts to go through with the tragic deal with Hugo which really surprised me as I thought they wouldn't go there.

Saw Battle Angel a few days ago. Enjoyable, but disposable, and definitely not worth $13.50 to go see.

They did a pretty good job with it, but a major complaint is that if you've ever seen the anime OAV, the ending is already spoiled for you.

I'd give it a C+/B-.

re: spoiler

Yeah, this movie deserves credit for giving a female protagonist the kind of arc and plot points that are usually reserved for male characters.

@The Eva Monkey, did you see it in 3D? I can honestly see someone coming out of this movie saying it wasn't worth it if they saw it in 2D but enjoying the well done 3D.
