RAGE OF BAHAMUT GENESIS

Catching up on my backlog (finally)

This is everything I've ever wanted in a Medieval Fantasy series. Action, Sorcery, Insanity, Tightly Written characters, an interesting and Batshit crazy world, and for once there's barely any nudity played for sex appeal. There are naked people, but the nudity is always relevant to the story and the situation and never comes off as exploitaitive. And for once a Loli character that isn't lewded once!

I will say this about Amero though. The character design looks really androgynous. So hearing that manly devil may care voice coming out of what I first assumed when I saw promos for the series was a woman? Well it was jarring to say the least.

So I finished Devilman, watch it. I have read the manga and this is a great adaptation that exceeds it in every way except for one thing

SPOILER: Show
Jinmen had a very interesting new twist that I feel was executed poorly overall.

However, all the new content made me actually love the manga and series more. You can look at the 3x3 thread here and see I put Devilman on my 3x3 but this was even greater! Normally I would put a huge warning on this about the type of person that can stomach and get through this but we've all watched End of Eva and love it here right? I don't really write reviews or go into detail about anime I adore because I just want people to go see it unspoiled completely.

Watched Fate Stay Night Heavens Feel Movie 1 in theaters today (yes, Aniplex hates Canada and brought it here months after the US). This film confirmed two things for me:

(1) ufotable is the best animation studio in the industry, their animation is miles beyond all other competitors;

(2) ufotable have exhausted themselves with Fate. The entire movie can be summarized as random half-ass'ed scenes depicting "narrative" that are used to stitch together a series of godly animated fights that happen every 20minutes. It's like ufotable stopped trying to write well. The awful pacing and mediocre script really brought the film down to a 6/10 for me. At least some effort on their part towards a well presented plot would have made this an easy 8 or 9 because the animation/battles/music were top tier.

Except for Fate/Zero, which was salvaged by the sheer immense writing chops of the the amazing Gen Urobuchi, everything Fate is bad written. Unfortunately, for me, insufferably so.
It's like a big fan of Shonen Anime thought, "I'm gonna make something for adults!", somehow thinking that means,
imbuing it with ridiculous "philosophic" "dialogue", completely dismissing, that no one talks that way, which makes it impossible to relate to the cast (a poor man's lord of the rings),
while still feeling the need to construct everything around arcane power systems and lore preached in hours of exposition,
thus turning a trashy premise promising FUN like Vampire Hunter D into a ridiculously self-serious display of overly complicated stuff to sit through just to seem "intelligent".

Watched episode 5 of Ousama Game: The Animation last night.

While Nobuaki is definitely noble in wanting to save everyone from certain death, he is a bit wimpy in how he does when everybody keeps dropping like flies. Yousuke's death by dismemberment somewhat appealed to the sadist in me with how bloody and gory it was. Ria still gives off that creepy demeanor even after it's revealed that she was raped in the past by parental units. Overall, the series borderlines on exploitation territory which somehow manages to be it's appeal.

In the past, I know I've done my share of complaining about loose adaptations of manga (e.g. Bokurano, Planetes), and given props to nigh frame for frame ones (Aria, Mushishi), but today, I can say that there are faithful adaptations that fall into the camp of "I've already read this; you're just presenting the same material to me, but much more slowly". The Junji Ito Collection for example. And Hoshiiro Girldrop, too.

Caught up a couple of episodes of Mahoutsukai no Yome, and the comedy SD moments are really serving to undercut the drama. And my initial reaction to the eponymous character in the Faerie Queene episode was "Calm your tits, Missus!" -- I've never seen such inappropriate Gainaxing from a character who's only sitting there. Perhaps it was because she's called Titania -- I can't think of any better reason.

And rather than being primarily a "let's sneak something into the timeline between Diebuster and Gurren Lagann" romp driven by ex-Gainax personnel, it's looking like DarliFra is going to be a teen relationship DORAMA with a slight mecha vs kaiju flavoured coating. While Hiro Protagonist is doing all the Shinji hand mannerisms, we can distinguish him from Shinji because a) he wants to get in the robot, and b) he's not very good at it -- one starts to wonder whether he was in fact auriga rather than sagitta on the one occasion when things went well for him. All in all, I think that one can go back on the shelf until I hear that the emphasis flips.

Darn it, Gus. I thought we convinced you to avoid this rubbish?

Finally got around to watching all of Ping Pong the animation.

Smile was a funny choice for a main character; someone that dispassionate wasn’t easy to root for… in fact, I was never rooting for him.
Then there’s Peco. It was interesting to see (the other) main character actually quit/leave the sport for more than one episode; usually one expects the protagonist to have a crisis of confidence early in the story, only to have the moral support slap them out of it the next episode; for a literal example see Battle Athletes Victory.
He comes back and finds his groove again rather easily, sure- he has to run up some steps and flirt with an old woman before getting there, but the vicarious sense of accomplishment just wasn’t there. I wasn’t rooting for him either.
Was I rooting for anyone? Well, by the mid-point I was behind Kong. His story actually had me feeling a little emotion.

Of all things- the style and look of the show was the best thing about it. I liked the way the screen would often chop itself up with different angles and close ups. It was never boring to look at.

Overall- it was alright. Not my favourite sports animay (Battle Athletes Victory again), not even my favourite on Crunchy (see Keijo!!!!!!!!), but alright.

Still watching the Ancient Magus’ Bride, although I am getting rather tired of its episode endings; Chise has an annoying habit of collapsing/getting kidnapped immediately before the credits. This level of cliff-hanger ending abuse makes me feel like I’m watching BubbleGum Crisis Tokyo 2040 again, and I don’t like being reminded of that show.

View Original PostMr. Tines wrote:"Calm your tits, Missus!”

We’ve already established that show is full of fairy bums, I suppose they just needed to fill the fairy norks quota too.
Of course- there’s also the not-vampire you’ll see a couple episodes later, which handily provides both.

Nice to see Dagashi Kashi back for another season, along with Hotaru and her crazy eyes.

Hmm. Never boring, but to my eyes always ugly. I watched it through, but could never bring myself to like it even though I could see what others admired.

Well, I suppose. But it doesn't, for me, detract from the greater sweep of the story. Still a favourite here.

March comes in like a Lion. Having picked up very late on recommendations, and only now having caught up, it's going to be frustrating to go onto a weekly schedule after marathoning so much. It's a curious show; its focus varies greatly between different arcs which at times has made me wonder where it's really heading. But OTOH certain things have resonated so strongly with me that it's even prompted me to wonder, essentially for the first time, whether I should write an autobiography. If I do (unlikely, frankly), then you'd be able to see why, but I'm not going to start on that here... Anyway, it's drawn me in, and isn't likely to let me go. The art style reminds me of Honey & Clover.

I took a similar route last year; I think marathoned the first 18 episodes or so before I started to watch it weekly. I do enjoy waking up though on Saturday mornings(or afternoons) and putting this one on and having a cup of coffee. The arcs are quite tricky though aren't they? For a while there I forgot I was watching a show about shogi! It is a very fine series, but not really quite in my top tier. However, the beginning of Episode 20, when Shimada dreams of a life in which he didn't focus on shogi, is one of the most beautiful scenes in all of annimay.

chazthesilencer wrote:Overall- it was alright.

Glad ya didn't hate it. Yea, China may be my favorite character as well, or probably tied with old Smile(I like the silent, loner types). I honestly can't really say why I love the series so much, I just really do. I'm really poor at writing reviews on things, but I'll just say a few things I liked about it. I think on my first watching I wasn't expecting Peco to be the player he was, and his reemergence as the Hero does sort of come out of no where, so when he went and beat Dragon it made me really happy. The series has one of my favorite soundtracks, I genuinely like the animation and probably would have assumed everyone else would like it if I didn't already know that a lot of people hate it(I can be very dense). I like that all of the main characters have their avatar sort of things; Smile and the robot, China and the airplane, Dragon and the, ahem, dragon. I like the master and protege relationships between Smile and Butterfly Jo and Peco and the old woman. And I like that all of the characters are pretty good people, even if it's nice to see Dragon lose.

Also watching Junji Ito, which is a nice Friday night treat. It seems like a Friday night show, don't it? It's not great or anything, but I have no connection to the source material so they can go ahead and do whatever they want with it. The animation is atrocious but I like a good anthology show. My favorite so far has been the one about old dude who had the long dreams. Biggest head scratcher moment: why did those dudes voluntarily go to the mountains with that freaky lookin lady?!

Also, hot take alert: Märchen Mädchen will be my favorite series of the season. Fingers crossed that one of the magic books is something by Faulkner.

Almost forgot to point this one out. I had seen the week prior the first episode of Digimon Tamers.

Because my Tamers knowledge is so limited having not seen the show in dubbed form when it was on television, I had thought that Takato and Jenrya were friends from the start and not rivals since the preview has the latter chastising Takato for not having control of his Guilmon. Also worth noting that Guilmon in the Japanese version is voiced by Masako Nozawa, the one and only Goku from Dragonball. It's understandable that the dub would cut out Culumon's tendency to end almost every sentence with Culu since in Spanish, it's one vowel correction away from being the word for "asshole".

Episode 18 of Cowboy Bebop. I just want to take this moment to say I retract every bad statement I ever said about Steve Blum's ability as a voice actor especially since I heard him in other projects and didn't complain. The ending with Faye's Beta recording of the time capsule was one of the most touching moments so far on the show and prior to that, the adventure Spike and Jet had locating a Beta player on the underground building with the wonderful music playing all for naught since the mail service brought a machine anyway was amusing. :D

Just when ya got caught up with the series too, huh? Yea, I haven't heard anything about any other series, I think it's just this one because it's on the main NHK channel(which reminds me, I haven't paid my NHK reception fees in a while...)

It's not too bad though, since the season is just 22 episodes; I don't really want the series to end anyway and now it'll be on for a bit longer. Probably use the next few Saturdays to catch up on the new Cardcaptor Sakura.

Digimon Tamers is a great show. It's been 10 years since I've rewatched it, but I remember it quite well. That alone should be a testament to how much I like that show, so I'd be surprised if it was anything less than a 8/10 for me.

Yes, it really is atrocious. Junji Ito is one of the few exceptional Manga creators. He is a true master in what he does. Everyone should check out one of his short Manga, and Uzumaki should be required reading. So you can imagine, how much it hurts to see such an atrocious adaption. His work deserves to be adapted by capable people with resources, like Yuasa's team from Science Saru.

Could be due to the fact that both shows are based on Manga from the same Manga-ka, Yukari Hashimoto.

They are from the same author, Ryohgo Narita. While Baccano!! is a fun, fast-paced romp that everyone should watch and can enjoy, Durarara!!'s quality sadly visibly suffers from the effects of having to churn out so many Episodes. It's still fun, tho.

Hmm, true. To be perfectly honest, the quality does dip a bit somewhere around the beginning of X2 (gets a bit boring), but I felt it was a worthy watch due to how it picked up near the end.

I love me some Junji Ito as much as the next guy, but I'm actually surprised at how much negativity I'm seeing with regards to the anime. Frankly, it's been far too long since we had a well-publicized anime that was purely horror based, as opposed to simply being a really dark fantasy with a ton of fanservice-y characters. There need to be more shows like this. Perhaps one day we'll get an anime adaptation of one of his longer series, like Uzumaki or Gyo (yes, I know Gyo had a direct-to-video anime movie a while back, but it looked awful).

As for the anime itself, it actually does a pretty good job at doing what it needs to, that being capturing the spooky and creepy mood of Ito's manga. I think my favorite episode so far was either Shiver or Long Dreams, but I really hope they adapt either The Black Bird or Splatter Film. Those two pull of the "scary-twist-at-the-end" horror cliche in a way that M. Night Shaymalan only wishes he could do.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.
