Chapter 21: Cell

SPOILER: Show

Misato studied the pale girl on the security monitor. She was sitting pristine and silent in the interrogation room, rigid and aloof. Her expression was bland, and vacant. Yet…strangely present. The woman squinted quietly, staring at the image. She had made the decision, come down here to talk to Rei, and yet now she found herself unable to take the next step. She lingered here in the security room, staring at the ghostly image.

“That’s pretty much the extent of her behavior,” the sentry at the desk said. “Sitting and staring, and nothing else. She’ll occassionally say some stuff, but none of it makes sense. We’ve been recording it, of course.”

“Send a transcript to my account.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

She sighed, counting down the seconds. There was nothing for it: she had to see this through. Shaking herself from her vigil, she awkwardly straightened and carefully moved towards the door. Her escort stood nearby, one hand raised slightly but not interfering. Misato appreciated that much more than if the woman had gone directly to helping her.

The Major made her way into the hallway, using the walls for support. She couldn’t sit in a wheelchair, she hated being trucked around on the gurney, and they had no walking assistance in the GeoFront: walkers and canes were the sort of things that would be common in a hospital that would see degenerative illnesses or rehabilitation, but not in a suite geared towards combat trauma. Still, she had found a way to walk at least, and using the walls to provide balance got her to where she needed to go.

She made her way to the cell, where two Security Troopers waited. They opened the door for her, and she entered with her escort. Rei gave them only a momentary glance, the kind a bored cat would make to an intruder, before going back to whatever strange, mental place she occupied.
Misato smirked, slightly. Within the room was a table, and a second chair. The escort pulled that chair back, and offered a hand for Misato. Sitting and standing were still sort of dicey, and Misato could manage both on her own. This time, however, she took the assistance: the walking had exhausted her. Rei watched that with a little bit of curiosity. Once seated, Misato waved the escort away, and the woman exited the room.

When the doors closed, Rei commented, “You aren’t who you are.”

“Excuse me?”

“Something has changed with you.” The ruby eyes flicked over Misato. “You’re…damaged.”

“I was injured.”

“I see.”

“All of us were. When the N2 device hit. You seemed okay, though.”

“This is one of the lowest portions of the base,” Rei commented. “I would not be injured.”

“Hmm. Shinji was, and so was Asuka, but they’re both fine now. I thought you should know.” Mentioning Shinji, Misato noted Rei’s eyebrows raise, but there was no other reaction.

“…I don’t know what to do with you.”

“What do you mean?”

“Rei, why were you made?”

“I don’t understand that question.”

“…what do you know about your past?” That seemed to confuse the girl, and she squinted.

“I know that I was somewhere before, and that I am not anymore. I know that I am here, and not there, and soon, I will be somewhere else. The transience makes things such as past and present quite meaningless. They are one and the same.”

Not very helpful, Misato thought grumpily. “What I mean is what do you remember about your life before; you’re childhood, you’re…what do you know about that?” Misato, of course, knew a lot of the details. She had seen the room of Rei’s birth. She had seen the clones.

She had seen the truth of the existence. What she didn’t have was the point.

“…I know that I am me,” Rei said quietly. She lowered her head, and seemed ashamed. Or was that embarrassment?

“…you don’t remember anything, do you?” Misato phrased it as a question, but the tone was clear: it was an observation. A statement. Rei detected that, and looked up. The bland mask broke for just a moment, and she seemed hurt by the implication.

“…I am me,” Rei repeated, as if it was her only defense. Misato sighed. Rei wouldn’t be able to tell her much more, it seemed. As far as to why she was created, it would take other avenues to determine that. Still….

Misato wanted to poke at the girl a bit more, but she found herself hesitant to do so. If you don’t know what it is, don’t poke it: and yet, she had no answers. She needed to determine some more about this girl, and stress and crisis were the essential means and method to determining the truth of a thing. It would have to be a very cautious and careful crisis, indeed. So she squinted, and decided to ease into it.

“I know some things about you,” Misato said. “Not a lot, but a bit. Would you like to hear them?”

“…yes.” Rei crossed her hands and perked up, all business. Misato stifled a smile. There was a strange nostalgia in the motion, but from where she couldn’t determine.

“You’re a clone. Did you know that?”

“Yes.” That was a frank and not altogether surprising answer. It was more than Misato expected, but she still couldn’t say she was surprised.

“Do you know how many there were before you? How many Reis?”

“…No.”

“I don’t, either. I knew one. Shinji thought very highly of her.” Something about that statement made the ruby eyes glitter. “What do you know about her.”

“I…sometimes…my eyes…look back.” Rei’s expression became pained, and she seemed to have left the conversation. Her brow furrowed.

“Your eyes look back?”

“I see…that place…where….” She closed her eyes, squirmed a moment, and then returned to her poise of serene detachment. “I remember a place that smelled like Shinji.” Misato cocked her head, pondering that sudden twist.

“…what is that like?” Misato asked. “That smell?”

“…a memory. It…is from somewhere.” Rei licked her lips, and studied the table. “There is…something important…about that place.”

“…Rei, do you know what a clone is?”

“It’s a copy.”

“Yes, it is. And the copy has to start somewhere. Did anyone ever tell you who you are a clone of?”

“…Me. I am a clone of me.” Misato nodded. True enough.

“Who was the first?”

“What?”

“The first you. Where did you come from?”

“…I came from…that place…that. I came from….” Rei swallowed, and looked away. “I feel this body eroding.”

“Rei…did someone tell you? Did anyone?”

“It pulls apart…at the cellular level. It is filled with rot. I feel…my skin rotting.” Her words were mechanical, and the brief moments of pained emotion seemed to have vanished. “My flesh is pulling apart.”

“You’re a clone of Yui Ikari. Do you know that name?” Rei’s head twisted sharply, the eyes focusing on Misato.

“What does that name mean?” she said.

“That’s who you came from.”

“I know Ikari. I know the Commander…and the Third Child. Who is Yui?”

“…She was the Commander’s wife. And Shinji’s mother.”

Rei stared at Misato, unreadable. Then…she detached again. Back to that place of emptiness. “I don’t know what those are.”

“What does that mean to you?” Misato pressed, trying to retrieve that moment of connection.

“…this body is dying,” Rei said. She closed her eyes. Misato waited, but she knew that this meeting was done. She slowly, carefully, stood up, and then moved to the door to knock for exit.

Damn . . . thanks for reminding me that Rei III's body is still gonna fall apart EoE style even when deterred from joining with Lilith. But serious, kudos for keeping up the quality of writing even when you're updating so quickly! ;)

Nooooooo! Don't die, Rei! ;_;

Ritsuko, Kaworu, one of you better do something about this, darn it! (What? Kaworu's soul might be in the Adam embryo, and Gendo's out of commission right now, so...)

Ahem... what I mean to say is, that was an interesting chapter, although I'm worried about what's going to happen to Rei. Please keep up the good work, Gob!

Chapter 22: Nag

SPOILER: Show

Shinji picked at his lip, thinking of the dream. Which led to thinking of Rei, which led to a half-haze memory of giggling, vacant faces, dissolving into amber sludge. He thought of the Rei that was down below them, in some holding cell. He thought of the Rei before her, the one that was someone unique, and all her own. Who had smiled at him once. And…was there another?

How many Reis had there been? Or was there one Rei, and many bodies? He closed his eyes.
And Rei, and Rei, and Rei, and Rei…a whole long line of Reis, stretching back before a time he had been here, existing, and being…Rei. Where did that line start? He whimpered. When had he started thinking of it like that?

When had he accepted it?

“Why are you crying?” Shinji sat up. Asuka was standing up, her arms crossed and her expression tired. She was wearing one of her school uniforms, a wrinkled one that had probably been stuffed into a locker and forgotten for a time. It seemed absurd that she should be wearing that. It occurred to him that was probably all that she had to wear. With the N2 strike, Tokyo-3 was gone. That probably meant Misato’s apartment was also gone, along with everything they had ever owned. Those clothes were all Asuka probably had. The clothes he had worn to the GeoFront were all he had. That…and the Plug Suits.

“Ah!” He sat up, in shock. Asuka blinked, surprised by the movement.

“What?”

“My S-DAT player,” he said, his voice tinged with a sound of realization and almost wonder. “It was blown up.”

“What?”

“Everything was blown up. So…my S-DAT player was blown up.” Asuka blinked slowly, raising her head and looking to the ceiling.

“Yeah,” she said quietly. “I forgot…the apartment’s gone, huh?”

“Yeah.”

“…all my dresses were up there. And my jewelery. My books…movies.”

“…that’s weird.”

“That my stuff is gone?” Asuka asked, but there was no venom in the tone. She seemed detached.

“No…it’s the S-DAT. I don’t care.”

“Don’t care?”

“That’s it’s gone. I thought I would, but…I really don’t. I feel…not bad. It’s strange.” He furrowed his brow. “Actually, I don’t feel bad about anything else being gone, either. It feels…lightening.” He smiled, just slightly. Asuka gave him a wary look, and sighed.

“I wish your cello hadn’t been blown up.” Shinji looked at her, curious. “I liked it when you played the cello.”

“…I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“That I don’t have a cello to play.” He sighed, curling his hands against his lap. “…Asuka, what happened to your arms?”

She turned slowly in place, putting her back to him gradually. The bandages were difficult to see when her arms were crossed, but now she stood between them and Shinji. “Why do you care?”

“You were gone, and I didn’t know why. The next time I saw you, you were…you weren’t awake.” He rubbed his arms. “It scared me. I didn’t want to see you like that. And I saw your arms. It didn’t really occur to me until just now…I guess things were….”

“It doesn’t matter,” she mumbled. “It’s over, now.”

“What is?”

“…nothing.” Asuka skirted the bed, walking briskly towards the door.

“She’s not the first,” Shinji said, unaware that Asuka was leaving.

“What do you mean?” she asked, and he glanced up in surprise, seeing her near the door. He had drifted, away from her for a moment. Feeling that distance, that detachment as she put up her wall. He remembered giggling faces dissolving into amber sludge. He had spoken on impulse.

“…Rei,” he said. “She’s the First Child, right, but she’s not really the first. So it’s ironic. That’s what I was thinking. It’s ironic, because she’s…not the first Rei.”

“…stop talking weird stuff,” Asuka mumbled.

“You weren’t here, so you don’t know that Rei died,” Shinji said. Asuka slowly approached the bed.

He looked up at her. “That’s not crazy talk, or anything. Ask Misato. She’ll say it, too. Everyone will. It’s, uh…matter of record, or something.”

“She’s not very dead, at least not the last time I saw her,” Asuka mumbled.

“…there was a place that Dr. Akagi took us. Me and Misato,” he said, dreamily. “There were tanks. And in the tanks were bodies, they were all…they were all Rei. Just a whole room of Reis.”

“…stop.”

“They aren’t there anymore. Dr. Akagi destroyed them. She said they were being used for the Dummy Plugs.”

“I don’t…want to know….”

“It doesn’t bother you?” Shinji fixed her with a hard stare. Asuka’s mouth dropped in surprise at the look. Slowly, her eyes lidded, and her mouth closed. She raised her nose up, and stared down at Shinji.

“No. It doesn’t,” she said quietly.

“It doesn’t bother you that Rei…came from somewhere else? That she’s…who was the first? The first Rei? She’s supposed to be a clone, but who is she a clone of.”

“I don’t really care.”

Shinji cocked his head. “You should. There’s something about that that made Dr. Akagi go crazy. She begged Misato to kill her.” The haughty expression on Asuka’s face didn’t change, but she lowered her head and looked away. She was trying to process that. “There’s…something…sick about all of that,” Shinji continued. “Seeing all of those…it’s not Rei, but it might be Rei, and if it is…what is she and why?”

“You obsess over your little doll,” Asuka muttered, her voice contemptuous. She didn’t leave, though, and she wavered in her spot, gripping her arms tightly.

“…I think there might be something dangerous about her. No, not…dangerous. But….” He closed his eyes. If Kaworu was an Angel, and he was a clone, what did that make Rei? She was just a clone, but…this was a circle. It was a circle he was trapped in, and he was running around and around and around….

He tossed his sheets away and swung his feet over the side of the bed. Asuka stepped back, surprised, as he scooted to the edge. “What are you doing?” she demanded.

“I’m getting up.”

“You were in a coma!”

“I feel fine,” he said, and he did, surprisingly. He had something he needed to do, and had to do it now. “Where are my clothes?”

“I don’t know!” Asuka said, extending a hand halfway as though to restrain Shinji. He ignored her and stood up. He wobbled for a moment, but the sensation passed and he walked towards the attached bathroom. Asuka followed him with her head, her mouth open. He stepped inside, and found a white bathrobe. He pulled it on over the hospital gown he wore, and found slippers in there as well.

“Where…where are you going?” Asuka asked quietly.

“I don’t know yet,” he admitted. “I don’t want to be here, right now.” He rubbed his head. “I feel itchy inside. In my mind. I feel like something is scratching through it, is whispering to me, and….” The rubbing became a hard, scrubbing motion.

And Rei, and Rei, and Rei….

He turned and hurried out of the room, absently pulling at his hair with one hand. Asuka stared after him for a minute, still stunned. Then, without consciously deciding to, she followed.

Though, Gob still might look good in a cocktail dress.
