What would Rei be like with a little more personality?

We all saw in the last episode with the re-imagined world Shinji envisioned, and with Rei with more sunny and cheerful personality, a stark contrast to her nearly emotionless demeanor. And in the Shinji Ikari Raising Project manga, she seems to be one of those shy and timid types, a bit of a kundere, if you will.

If she had developed some type personality at some point during the series, even somewhere early on, what kind of girl do you think she would be? Or could have been? And how will affect her interactions with the other characters?

I think Rei would be a reserved person, very quiet most of the time, and would say a lot with a few words to people she doesn't know. But, if she is with people she really trusts, her inner personality would come out, and she's be very open to trying new things out, expanding her mind beyond what she knows, and be very friendly and kind. She'd probably be very protective of her friends, almost to the point of self-sacrifice, which isn't much different than what happens, but she would verbalize it better. And she'd know how to stand up for herself as well.

Her interactions with Shinji would have been drastically altered, and perhaps she would have played a more active role in fighting and hanging out at the apartment with Shinji, and even being social at school. As for Asuka, she would have put Asuka in her place and defended Shinji from her, and they would have become at least friends.

I think I'd put OrdinaryUpbringing!Rei somewhere in between DarkBluePhoenix's post, and EoTV Rei. I personally do not think she would retain much if any kuudere aspects. That's what Rei's known for, and presumably why she's portrayed that way in the Raising Project, but I don't see how she'd turn out that way if she was raised in a more social environment.

Rei, while having no agency, definitely always had personality. It's very alien compared to other humans, but it is a personality. To me at least.
I think you might find what you're looking for in 2.22, in which Rei's personality is much more proactive.

So you're saying:

not cheerful personality = no personality at all

You should watch Daria.

I have to highly disagree on your statement that Rei has no personality. In my opinion, she is one of the most well-written characters I have ever seen.
So, making her more cheerful as you are implying would only take away from her character and make her way less memorable, on top of not really fitting for both the tone of the show and the circumstances and purpose of her.

I mean, which would you remember better after not having seen a show for lets say half a year:
A klutzy, hyperactive, maybe kind of slapstick, heroine/possible love interest (the way Rei is in the alternate reality mentioned in the original post) or
a mysterious, silent and kind of strange character of the same physical appearance, like Rei is for the rest of the show?
Why don't you save the Princess next time instead of being such a baby? She would love it and maybe you could get a sweet kiss. ~ sadly not Mari in Q (Joseki)

I think DarkBluePhoenix was pretty spot-on. I don't think Rei would ever reach a personality even close to the one in the last episode, but she'd at least express herself more.

Hilariously, I can envision a Rei with more personality having some similarities to Daria.

Correct, DarkBluePhoenix. Also, doesn't she look like a Mii here?

A bit like a Mii, just rendered more correctly. And in all honesty, I would not mind being her bestest best friend.

I hate it when people think being introverted means having "no personality." Still waters run deep. Rei (at least in NGE) is a good example of this.

Em she'd be like she was episode 26 when they showed the AU universe where everyone had led a normally life or she'd similar to how she is in the spin off manga's which normally have her as sassy, smart and confident. Though I do feel she still had a personality in the series/manga its just covered by the fear and stress of being replaceable.

Ah, thanks! You know, you can say what you like about the dub, and its mistranslations, and its lower-quality acting, but it really does have a certain je ne sais quoi that makes it worth watching, despite all that. I actually love when the dubbers modify the source material; when it's done well, you get a viable alternative to the original that can end up giving you two shows for the price of one, or in some cases (such as that of Hetalia), the English version is actually far superior. I say this even though I almost never watch dubs. They still hold a certain charm. (To be fair, that charm is sometimes marveling at the poor acting, but even so, generally worth switching language tracks for an episode or so.)

I do recall that Tiffany Grant and Amanda Winn Lee in pod casts have both said that they and the others would spend hours in the series and EOE going through the Japanese translations trying to find the suitable match in places and even if you hate the English dub you have to respect the effort and love the voices actors and the hours they put in to Evangelion and from what I've seen you can really tell when there's no love in dub though my pick for superior dub would be Black Lagoon as the English voice cast just fits better in the setting.

You may want to look in to reading the Shinji Ikari Raising Project manga or playing the Girlfriend/Boyfriend of steel games as both take a slightly more light hearted fan service view of the universe which mirror that episode. ^_^

Ooh, nice... I actually planned on skipping those (or pushing them back veeeery far), everything sounded so weird and kinda dumb... but if its anywhere near the levels of comedy gold as that alternate universe, Ill definitely give them a go

god were straying far offtopic... time to go back
