This is NOT an Onion article. Can anyone verify its accuracy and that this isn't a colossal joke?

Osama Bin Laden was a Weeb. Or at the very least someone involved with him was.

I doubt it himself playing those games, as he had either minors or younger members of his retinue who have to spend time months at a time keeping guard, hence the games, the cartoons, and the porn.

As an Austrian, I feel the need to say my to cents. So at first, people weren't sure if this was photoshopped. And I for one think it's much cooler than all those crosses we have on many mountain tops. :D I think, it's funny as hell - and I'm in the majority. Which is interesting, as Austria tends to swing on the conservative side. Then again, we have whole stretches on the Danube reserved for nude bathing.

Apparently Net Neutrality in the United States is going to be retracted. How might that affect this forum?

The principle behind cancelling net neutrality is that ISPs will be able to charge content providers to give them some preference in bandwidth. The likelihood would be that a few large entertainment corporations would end up with slightly improved access (only slightly, because if they all pay for it, the same cake will still be being shared among the major users of bandwidth), and the rest of the world with slightly poorer access. And customers will end up paying the bill in the form of increased subscriptions.

99 million-year-old tick found preserved in amber on a dinosaur's fossilized feather

the fossils will not be yielding any dinosaur DNA. The tick’s last meal was not preserved, and even if it had been, the lifespan of DNA is too short for it to be successfully extracted. Jurassic Park was based on a real study that had claimed to have extracted DNA from amber, but subsequent experiments concluded that the amber sample had been contaminated by modern DNA. Currently, the technique to extract sufficiently well-preserved DNA from amber—if that is ever possible—does not exist, as DNA easily degrades as time goes by.

You mean we can't grow dinosaurs from blood ticks ate?

I know Japan has been beefing up its military--ahem, its self-defense forces--but I'm pretty sure this is illegal somehow. After all, doesn't Article 9 prohibit Japan from possessing "offensive" weapons, such as heavy bombers, ballistic missiles, and aircraft carriers?

Abe apparently wants to amend that bit. Not sure if that also includes getting rid of the US troops currently stationed there (they are still there, no?), but...

I suppose Japan'd be the West's favorite power in the Far East. Certainly better than China and North Korea. (I do however dislike the focus on nationalism/militarism, but... at this point I'd rather look at it optimistically.)

This isn't going to end well. I just know it. It's something that the United States does all the time, yet never seems to learn from: we come up with ideas to help other countries that seem friendly at first, but then we always act surprised when they turn out to have different interests from us. It always ends badly.
How many times must we see the evidence? We create the Treaty of Versailles prevent another war in Europe, but it ends up disillusioning Germany, allowing Adolf hitler to seize power. We lend support to the Soviet Union during World War II, but then they become a major military power and our greatest rival of all time. We train the Mujahideen insurgents in Afghanistan to fight the Soviets, but they become Al Qaeda and plunge the world into the War on Terror.
The United States has been keeping Japan on a tight leash for the past 60 years; if that changes and Japan decided it wants to be a military power again things could go south very, very quickly.

Specifically, they are only allowed to possess the forces with which to defend themselves. They are no longer allowed to project power away from their territorial waters. It's a very sticky situation when it comes to aircraft carriers, which are considered the crown jewel of power for any navy (which ironically, Japan helped shift us all towards), like the battleships of old. The ships in question, Izumo-class helicopter destroyers do look very much like old style, WWII aircraft carriers, such as the USS Enterprise (CV-6) or the later Essex Class Carriers, which were more than capable of projecting air and sea power across the Pacific. However, the Izumo-class looks more like an aircraft carrier than the LHD Wasp-Class or even their own Hyuga-Class helicopter destroyer, which is what is concerning those in the far-east and elsewhere.

Although, I can't blame the Japanese for wanting to beef up their defenses considering the amount of advancement the Chinese and North Korean militaries, with China having one Russian built aircraft carrier, with another being built and more on the way, and the North Koreans being all... well crazy or whatever. The situation with Senkaku Islands, which are claimed by China, Taiwan, and Japan jointly also require more domestic muscle in order to keep up with the Jones' on that side of the world.

imprimatur13 wrote:Not sure if that also includes getting rid of the US troops currently stationed there (they are still there, no?)

Yes, we're still there, mainly on Okinawa, but there are other bases in Japan.

Germany has its military back, perhaps its time Japan was allowed theirs back too? I mean, they were both on the wrong side of WWII. And to be fair, the French pushed the Versailles Treaty more than we did, and the war reparations which financially crippled Germany are what helped Hitler seize power, among other things, like forcing Germany to claim sole responsibility for the war and its damage. The US wanted to foster trade in Europe to rebuld the economy, but no one wanted to work with Germany, so that plan died off. And the USSR was more of a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" deal, which always has its downsides on the back end when the common enemy is gone.

The thing is, Germany has acknowledged and apologized for the horrific acts they committed during the war. The Holocaust is a mandatory part of every German child's education nowadays, and you can be arrested for even displaying a swastika if it isn't in a documentary or for purely artistic purposes. Germany has accepted complete responsibility for the things it did.
Japan hasn't done that. Other Asian countries, like China and Korea, still don't completely forgive Japan for things like the Bataan Death March, the "comfort women", and the Rape of Nanking. They see Japan rebuilding its military, and they freak out. With how tense things already are in North Korea, and with China building up its own military too, this could get ugly.
