A little research (well a fair bit, actually) tells me that (as Monk said, I realise) phpBB only uses session IDs when it fails to set cookies. I guess you need to check your browser settings carefully. My Chrome test browser has three cookies for this forum.

I can't think of any other reason for this to happen, unless you have an anti-malware product that is so aggressive that it is blocking cookies outside the browser, or some bizarre router content filter doing the same.

Are you using https?

I do, but it's not making any difference. Logging in at the front page, my login session expired again by the time I navigated here.

I looked at Chrome's cookie storage but there are zero cookies for this site, only a 35 byte "local storage". Third-party cookies are disabled; could that be the problem?

Forum cookies shouldn't be seen as third-party, but it's worth trying changing that setting for diagnostic purposes.

Are you going to exactly: "https://forum.evageeks.org" ? The site has had variants of this which could now fail in this way.

Got it. It was .com I was trying to use, .org works properly and now I see icons and banners as normal.

That's useful to know, thanks. What I'd better do is add redirections so that the surviving old URLs are redirected to the correct canonical one.

Nearly another year; but redirection is easy enough to do.

For a while now I've been suffering from this issue where opening Google links to this site (including ones within gmail messages) is often interrupted by a warning that the EvaGeeks site is considered untrustworthy. Does anyone have the slightest idea what could be tripping Google's security protocols like this?

Do you visit using https?

(I plan to make this happen automatically by redirection.)

Well, I do use HTTPS Everywhere. But that shouldn't be responsible for Gmail treating emails from this site as automatically suspicious; IIRC, the warning said that the site is associated with some sort of "fraud".

You didn't previously mention emails from this site (though I see I could have worked that out if I hadn't been on my way out...).

At present emails from the site travel through my email server rather than directly from the EvaGeeks server (sorting that is on my to-do list for the New Year). However, I have no reports from any other user that this is causing them any problem. In any case, you are getting the emails, and it is clicking the links that is getting you warnings. Again, no other Gmail user has yet reported this.

I've never used Gmail, so I have no idea what settings it may have which could affect this. I guess it would be helpful to me to have the exact text of the warning so that I can try to understand what might be triggering it. Possibly the wording of emails from the site might need reconsideration.

Well, now I wish that I had memorized the warning message before I clicked "Ignore, I trust this message" (which I did twice, because apparently PM notifications are somehow different enough from thread notifications to warrant a separate warning). IIRC, though, the warning was "This message could be a scam".

OK, that's enough to identify it. I don't know precisely what triggers it (it could be a combination of things), but for that message it is definitely worth pressing the "I trust this message" option, as you did, which feeds a counter-trigger into their system for everyone.

Google (understandably, I suppose) doesn't give any information on what the triggers are - its only related advice is purely on how to check the security of the sender's account (on the presumption that it's been compromised). As the messages concerned are ones you expect from EvaGeeks, that is clearly not an issue.

When I went onto the main page this morning, I got this:
<?php
/**
* Front to the WordPress application. This file doesn't do anything, but loads
* wp-blog-header.php which does and tells WordPress to load the theme.
*
* @package WordPress
*/

/**
* Tells WordPress to load the WordPress theme and output it.
*
* @var bool
*/
define('WP_USE_THEMES', true);

/** Loads the WordPress Environment and Template */
require( dirname( __FILE__ ) . '/wp-blog-header.php' );

I was able to get around it, and make it to the forum, but what exactly is going on here?

The version of PHP on the two servers that Ornette (wiki & news) and Monk (forum) are running stopped getting security updates at the turn of the year. Unfortunately, all our software breaks if the later PHP is installed, and automatic updates break our extensive customisation.

Monk and I are slowly updating the forum behind the scenes in preparation for updating the PHP version on the forum server fairly soon, to get back on the update path (prod: I must finish my bit now that Xmas is past). The wiki and front page are on Ornette's server still, and I guess he is more paranoid about security than we are - so I imagine he's updated PHP already and is now trying to hack the other things to work again. The wiki works in part (I noticed a problem with image links myself only earlier this morning). The trouble is that the wiki and front page software also, like the forum, cannot simply be upgraded to run on the new PHP because our data and customisations are not compatible without appreciable work.

Hopefully Ornette will report what he's doing shortly.

So I tried clicking on the members link, but it would just bring me to the Board Index. Is this related?

Is this a browser or OS related failure then?

No change has been made to the Forum server recently, so I think you have a local failure of some kind. It works for me in every browser, and using http or https.

Have you made any change regarding any software that might interfere with the browser, such as anti-virus, or ad blocking?

No... It's weird, if I chose to open Members in a separate tab, it works perfectly fine. If I stay in my tab, it goes right back to Board index.
