help me decide whether i should continue the effort.

Sounds like it failed the Tines test for you.
Tried giving it a chance myself, but the execution of that second episode was just so, so awful. Not worth the effort.

Do I care who wins? Not really. Will I remember watching it in 2 years? Probably not.

Mmmyup. Pretty much this.
This show has an annoying habit of having inner monolog overlap with dialogue; whilst this might keep the pace of the episode rolling, it does play havoc with one’s eyes. I’ve adapted to reading text along the bottom of the screen, but not the top and bottom simultaneously:

something about the way it looks appalls me to no end. Like, I kimochi warui appalling. Which is weird, I've never had that sensation before.

Is it the trying to look like something out of Ghibli but produced with a TV-budget and schedule backgrounds that aren’t doing it for you? Or are you put-off by Fairy-bums?
Image
Come on, Rob. Fairy-bums are glorious.
By the way- am I not supposed to hear them clearly say “Sleigh Beggar”?

My Girlfriend is Shobitch. Teen rom-com, with lewd humour. Since fan-subbers are taking their sweet time translating the latest Seitokai Yakuindomo OVA AND film (would be a nice Christmas present for this year, as it was last year), this is having to serve as my instead in the meantime.
Gags are very hit and miss. The unappealing character design doesn’t help, there’s something about the eyes that looks off to me. Maybe if there were more Fairy-bums to sweeten the deal…

Kino’s Journey (2017). Um… am I supposed to just accept that motorbikes can talk? Or is it just the one?

Watched Dirty Pair: Project Eden after Dr. Nick mentioned it. Went with the Streamline dub specifically so I could hear the famous Braille gag.
Very silly film; the bouncy animation was nice and all but with no real stakes or intrigue to the plot I found myself yawning a lot.
The Bond-ish OP turned out to be the main highlight, unfortunately. Worth reposting the link.
I don’t think light-sabers would work this way:

If you could impale the blade that far, wouldn’t it just keep melting away at the base and…

Food Wars. With the arrival of Erina’s father it looks like we finally have a big, mean baddie for us to boo at, and for Soma to vanquish with the power of yum.
O-faces are one thing, but I didn’t expect to see traumaface in a show about battle-chefs:

Yes? As I recall he has far more character in the original, which since you ask I presume (to my surprise) you haven't seen.

Or is it just the one?

A second one spoke in a recent episode.

Sounded more like ベッグ to me. Trouble is, if it is actually some Gaelic phrase, and not a coinage for the series, guessing the actual spelling will be a fun game (the more complicated converse of finding out that Lioslath of the Sidhe is actually Leslie the Elf).

I found this: 'In the English adaptation, Chise is referred to as a "sleigh beggy" instead of a "surei bega". This in itself is a slight Cultural Translation, as it's the English spelling of the Manx Gaelic term "sleih beggey", a type of fairy.'

Also: 'The Irish expressions “the Gentry” and “the Gentle Folk” were not bestowed on the Manx fairies as a body, or at least they have not survived; neither has any other title which might testify to their physical or social superiority. They were the “Sleih Beggey,” the Little Folk – the right sort for such a little island.'

Given that the series is set in Britain - in the West when not in London - this seems quite appropriate.

Here are the series I'm actively watching right now:

Outlaw Star
Kinda similar-yet-different to Cowboy Bebop, sort of like turkey is to chicken, or oranges are to tangerines. If you're looking for a groundbreaking, original story, you won't find it here. Normally, rehashed character types and settings are something I look down on in TV shows, since they often mean the writers are using convention as a crutch at the expense of creativity. Outlaw Star is an exception for two main reasons. One, there just aren't all that many shows like it. The other is that it cycles between genres. Space opera, hard sci-fi, fantasy, martial arts, they all get their turns at bat, and it transitions well between them.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
I was a latecomer to the whole Gundam craze (as I so often seem to be with anime series--I was also late to the party with Pokemon and Evangelion), so the first series I watched was Advanced Generation--which isn't as terrible as everyone says. Iron-Blooded Orphans, though, blows it out of the water. It's the first Gundam series to air in English in over a decade, and it deserves to be.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
You know the story: basically Indiana Jones meets Fist of the North Star. Guys (and it really is mostly guys; the female characters never seem to stick around long) traveling around the world and getting into various japes and scrapes with both supernatural and human enemies while searching for ancient artifacts. All it's missing is Harrison Ford. If any anime were actually begging for a live-action Hollywood movie version, it would be this one. But no, we have to settle for Scarlett Johansson as an anorexic robot.
Life can seem a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when so much is on the line.

Episode 106 of Sailor Moon S.

Felt like skipping over to how Haruka and Michiru met and it was so sentimental. At first it seemed like Michiru was being a creeper but as the flashback with the demon looking like something out of a tentacle hentai unfolded, hearing her pour her heart out to Haruka was so deeply touching that it makes me appreciate the couple as something worth protecting.

If I may ask, what is it that you find engaging about Pokemon?

The anime, I find nothing engaging about whatsoever. OK, maybe not nothing--it's always funny to see the lines from it that have become memes nowadays like "AIM FOR THE HORN", and the 20th anniversary movie was actually good. But taken as a TV show in its own right, it just doesn't hold up. When I said I got into Pokemon late, I was talking more about the games. I started late with Sapphire, during the time when the franchise was in the doldrums.

Not gonna disagree I did like love the idea of the ships having space arms to fight with though and Starwinds magic cap gun interesting and I love the episode Hot Springs Planet Tenrei because of how it totality gets it own back on the three perverts in one of best fuck you's ever put to screen. Not gonna lie though I utterly hated that they tried to force a toxic romance between Henry MacDougall and Melfina it was really horrible, creepy and vile on every level and shouldn't have been put to screen as his actions make him helping her at the end of the series seem so fake as he treated her so badly hence any redemption just wasn't believable in my view.

I saw the last 4 episodes of Please Teacher in dubbed form yesterday. Still one of my favorite dubs ever though I wish I knew why Melissa Fahn was replaced in the role of Kaede for the remaining episodes by Rebecca Forstadt?

Episode 15 of Cowboy Bebop. Until I saw it today, I always thought that Whitney's middle name was Elias instead of Hagas. Nice to get a little backstory on Faye, however disjointed it looks so far.

Rewatched Your Name, and it's truly a remarkable film that shows how a movie can glide over even large mechanistic plot holes if it has good momentum and fingers the right thematic and emotional chords.

SPOILER: Show
Take, for example, Itomori with its ancient meteorite craters: it makes absolutely no sense that the new shower of comet fragments would be hitting this same location again. But when you take a step back and consider that this is a youth romance film where the primary external factor threatening the main couple's happiness is fairly literally the sky falling on them, it definitely gets you in the right teenage headspace. Hell, the movie even gets away with being just another time loop puzzle anime despite the ubiquitousness of that particular storyline (in before Rebuilds are confirmed to be a time loop puzzle). It's that good at tinkling its keys in front of the viewer.

Battle Athletes OVA:

SPOILER: Show
Image

It's a show about ass, but at least it's a high effort show about ass. A lesser ass show wouldn't take place in the year 4999 AD and begin with condensed history lesson recapping World War 3 (interrupted by a magnetic pole shift as imagined by Roland Emmerich), humankind's recovery, new renaissance and colonization of the solar system, a centuries-long space war with the not-Zentradi, and the birth of a new human-form-worshipping philosophy (with a more than a whiff of eugenics) arising from the increased automation and dronification of the said war. It's not a deep show or good science fiction, but it does present a fancy setting for all of the butt stuff, and features some sporadic charmingly bonkers ideas like the nudity-embracing Moon Amish. Does it qualify as classy sleaze? Ehh, maybe.

Having now watched all of the Robotech component shows, I get the feeling that Southern Cross is the underrated one, likely due to its butt-ugly mecha designs. The robots really do look like Chinese Macross knock-offs, but other than that and its unfulfilling non-ending resulting from an early cancellation (a typical malady of giant robot shows of the era), it's surprisingly decent three fourths of a real robot anime. The magic flower plot is ridiculous, but the show isn't too self-serious about it, and it greatly benefits from Jeanne being such a fun main character. She's kind of an abrasive airhead, completely unsuited to the discipline of military life, but she is in the military because she's almost a savant-level shitwrecker when piloting her tank-mech. She's a very unique female protagonist, a far cry from both the quiet overachiever and dark action girl archetypes, and her subordinate Bowie serves as a great straight man to her antics.

On the other hand, while Mospeada has far superior mech designs and a plot that tries to be a lot more serious, it really stumbles with its characters. Yes, Mint is famed for being this super-annoying child character for a reason, but Stig is pretty deficient as a protagonist as well, vacillating between a by-the-book officer type and a hot-headed rookie depending on the episode and situation, and this part of him never gets any better. Considering the cast, it feels to me Yellow should've been the protagonist: he's actually the one musical artist in this Super Dimension series, he's got a unique stage gimmick, and most importantly of all, he has much more interesting personal motivations. Whereas Stig simply wants to avenge his fridged fiancée, Yellow's journey to the Reflex Point is fraught with doubt, considering that as a loner he was doing pretty well for himself on Inbit-occupied Earth. He stands to lose his freedom and his life, with very little promise of actually undoing the Inbit domination, but he presses on because he has made new friends. And when it comes to the obligatory human-alien romance, Yellow x Sorji beats Stig x Aisha because Sorji starts out as an enemy ace instead of being an attractive deadweight that the team inexplicably keeps dragging along.

Yellow at least got to be the main character of Mospeada: Love Live Alive, even though it's just a short epilogue interspersed with a music video compilation. But while this focus on the best boy is appreciated, Love Live Alive also contains some surreally bad writing: perhaps don't give your character lines like this if the first thing we see him doing is littering. And he's a repeat offender!

Mospeada really is one of those anime that could actually benefit from a modern remake, since that's what remakes should be for, new stabs at flawed material with obvious potential. They could even keep it as a less risky one-cour anime simply by cutting off redundant things and Mint. The New York episode would serve as a good template for what the whole show should ideally resemble, a musically rich road trip through comfily post-apocalyptic America.

I think with Shinkai's films, especially the wonderful Voices of a Distant Star, 5cm per Second, and Your Name, he probably realized that there were things people seriously could pick apart about them, but he was probably like, "screw it." He does things his way, gets across his message and has an incredibly cool style(like Anno).

In the middle of the 21st century would teenagers still be text messaging with phones from 2002? Would two teenagers love each other without realizing how to call one another on a telephone? Did whatever happen in Your Name make any sense?

Q. Should we care?
A. No.

His soundtracks and visuals are top class(I could probably watch his movies without any dialogue), and as long as you're not too cynical the love stories in them are pretty nice.
I used to work in a factory and I was really happy because I could daydream all day -- I.C.
And thanks to EVA, I've started like myself and that has made me very happy. Mr. Anno, please keep working on EVA a lot more.
and thank you so much for everything!!

Feeling so proud of myself because I just finished the final two episodes of Aquarion! The final battle was epic to say the least, with seamless visuals and a plot that settles itself to an extent since some side characters seem to get shafted after they've been put out of harm's way. I would totally rank Apollo/Silvia in my list of top anime romances of all time (even though I haven't made a list yet  ). All in all, a great robot anime and this totally frees me up to watch the sequel Evol.

Having taken up Amazon Prime on the 30 day free trial for my Christmas shopping, I've also been watching YuYuYu S2. Given the short (six episodes) run, the plot is having to develop at break-neck pace. Alas the Amazon subs are "electronic brain pancake crystal elderly"-tier, to the extent that I'm not sure that anyone who hasn't seen the first season and been following all the side material, especially the KuMeYu LN, would have the foggiest about what is actually going on.

I've also rewatched the first half of Rozen Maiden, which is as cute as ever; and I also re-watched the first couple of episodes (yes, broadcast order) of Haruhi. This time I could appreciate the credits for the Adventures of Asahina Mikuru, but I was surprised at my quite visceral reaction to Haruhi when she started doing her thing in the next episode. Clearly, I don't get it.
