Of the shorter songs, my favorite is Dolls' Polyphony with it's acapella rhythm spliced with a bit of keyboard. From the longer options, Tetsuo and Shohmyoh rank very high.

I often think that it's one of the greatest missed opportunities in cinema that no other filmmaker ever enlisted them to create a soundtrack. Unless Shoji Yamashiro just doesn't feel like doing another one. Either way, it's immensely unfortunate.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. For a show i claim to hate it does have a marvelous soundtrack! I am referring to the Cowboy Bebop: Blue CD i received today.

My definite favorite is Words That We Could'nt Say with Mushroom Hunting following closely. I wouldn't say Chicken Bone has great lyrics but the beat is dope and The Real Man has sexy drum n bass rhythm.

The one that nearly bored me to sleep was Farewell Blues. The bonus track got me out of that slump.

After nearly two decades of owning it, I FINALLY gave Fear Factory's official debut album "Soul of a New Machine" a serious listen and boy are my ears pleased with the result!

It's significantly different in tone from what would come from them since Demanufacture with the traditional extreme metal influences reigning heavy on the beat here. I think also finally seeing Full Metal Jacket some years ago helps with the spotting of sample fanservice. I know I am going to get lynched for saying this but I have never seen the first Blade Runner movie in my life so I can't really identify any samples used here if any...

My God, I can't stop listening to the cover-up album from The Protomen. I just keep on listening to I still believe, mr. Roboto, and Total Eclipse of the Heart over and over again. It is so f****** good.

New Jon Hopkins records dropped only a couple days ago. Just listening through properly for my first time now, having only caught bits and pieces on the radio at work previously; absolutely sublime stuff. Too early to call it, but it seems on par with 2013's Immunity, which is just a stunner of an album. Lush, exquisitely crafted (almost flawlessly so) electronic music, ranging from cinematic/ambient pieces, alongside beat/techno driven tracks as well.

This one feels less "club" and more "ambient" than his usual works, and it's great. I'm really digging it.

I am really enjoying Cain's Offering recently... Stormcrow is a runner-up for a 10/10 album

Even though it came out last year, I've only recently been listening to more of the self-titled Slowdive release. I don't think many people would agree with me, but it's a way better album than Souvlaki in my opinion, which has, like, only two good songs, whereas the rest you can take it or leave it (I'd argue the second-half is complete drek). Those two songs are great though, ''When the Sun Hits' specifically is probably the best shoegaze song ever, heart-achingly beautiful with heavy guitar-work. However, this new one, every cut is worthy of being a radio single. Just way more consistent, surprising considering it's after a 20 year break.

Favourite tracks: 'Sugar for the Pill', 'No Longer Making Time' and 'Go Get It'

I agree, however the distribution of the two sides if fairly balanced just like on the last one. The full 10 minute/album version of 'Everything Connected' is awesome, and even a little more dancefloor orientated than anything on Immunity, even 'Open Eye Signal'.

Man, I can't get over how good of a record it is...

Seems nice, if a little bit "safe"? Like an off-brand version of Radiohead's The Bends.
I've been listening to the new Beach House and MGMT records recently. No masterpieces, but I enjoy them a lot!

I like 7 a lot, particularly the opening track. I really liked the work Sonic Boom did producing Panda Bear's Tomboy so it was cool to see him working with them. Though, after listening to their last five records a lot recently I think Depression Cherry has gotta rate as my favorite.

Them and Deerhunter(who I've also been loving lately) I see as a couple of the best indie acts of the last decade or so. They only put out great records.

Ooph. They're apple and oranges, two different bands working within two different genres. Funny you mention Beach House in the same post because Slowdive are a shoegaze/dream pop band, much closer to them, then say the alternative of Radiohead. I do get what you're saying though.

I'd recommend listening to 'When the Sun Hits' from one of the earlier records. I think it's the best example of their sound, and their best song. Not only do I rate it as one of the best shoegaze tracks of all-time, it's probably in my personal top 10 songs of all-time. Just such a gorgeous piece of music: Dreamy, melodic vocals and heavy, wall-of-sound crashing/swirling guitars. The biggest tease is that some of the most beautiful stuff seeps in just as the track fades out, always leaving you wanting more. Listen very loud (all shoegaze needs to be almost-deafeningly loud to get the effect) and with very good headphones/speakers.

I like 'Dark Spring' and 'Lemon Glow'. There were a couple others that stood out but I missed the names on my one listen-through so far. However, I can't see this album topping Depression Cherry or Bloom.

Joy-dude, what else you been listening to? What did you like from 2017 and what are you liking in 2018 so far?

I've given it a listen. Not really my jam. Starting the idea with the most common of chord progressions is something I'm very allergic against. Drowning the simple melody in heaps and heaps of guitars is something I like a lot, though. I've just seen this effect done to many better songs. Like the Ending for PenguinDrum.

I started 2017 basically only listening to New Order's entire discography. Something struck December 2016 and got me really into New Order out of nowhere. To the point where Technique is basically my favorite album of all time now. It's very poppy and sunny and I love how the album is put together, the songs go into one another very well. Music Complete turned out to be a great record too, and I've listened to it a lot past year or so. Besides from listening to NO all the time, the two albums I listened to most last year were a couple albums from '16: Modern Baseball's Holy Ghost and Black Marble's It's Immaterial(which I got into by somehow hearing Iron Lung somewhere). Holy Ghost was just insanely good; the band was just getting better and better with each release. They went on hiatus a bit after it came out, which sucks, but I'm sure they'll get back together in due time. It's Immaterial(and all of Black Marble's other stuff) is just my kind of synth based music, though I can't really explain why I like it so much. Touche Amore's Stage Four was another beautiful album that I listened to a lot, though it didn't hook me in as much as the other two albums I just mentioned. Also listened to a lot of Pavement's b-side and outtakes stuff after mostly only listening to their albums. Listened to a bunch of American Football(both their LPs) and a bit of Owen. Got into exactly one rap album, 2Pac's All Eyez on Me. And listened to the same old shit from the bands I've been listening to for years;Thursday, Interpol, Cold Cave, Animal Collective, Say Anything, Yeezy, The Postal Service.

The records that were actually released in '17 that I liked were LCD Soundsystem's American Dream, Alvvay's Anti-Socialites, Sandy Alex G's Rocket, Drab Majesty's The Demonstration and Salughter, Beach Dog's Birdie.

As I said recently I've been listening to a lot of Deerhunter and Beach House. Also a lot of Slaughter, Beach Dog(which is a Modern Baseball side project). In the early spring I liked the Arcade Fire and The Replacements a lot, and recently I can feel myself getting back into a Depeche Mode mood. There aren't really albums I've loved that have come out this year, but I'm sure they'll be some stuff that comes out this year that I really like. How about you man? What'd'ya think of Rainbow Mirror?

More general fodder for the thread; caught this pleasant number on the radio today whilst at work, which sounds to me like Bon Iver by way of The Police: Westerman - Confirmation

View Original PostJoy Evangelion wrote:What'd'ya think of Rainbow Mirror?

As a massive Prurient fan, I'm still posing the same question to myself. I've only managed to get through the whole three-hour plus ordeal once, and that was in two separate sittings, effectively splitting the album in half. Some bits and pieces jumped out at me, and it's doubtless a great ambient album, incredibly polished (what with having the guy from Lussuria on staff as well), but it just lacks definition. I think for Prurient, Fernow's vocals, lyrics and spoken word are such a large part of the character and charm, and their absence just leaves a massive void.

To be honest, Dom put out a better couple of ambient albums the same year, last year, in the form of his Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement moniker; Green Graves and Ambient Black Magic, which I've enjoyed immensely. 'Watery Grave' specifically strikes me a cozy, equatorial Silent Hill-like fever dream. As ambient music I think they actually achieve their endgame, whereas I'm still struggling to find that, or haven't quite found more time, for Rainbow Mirror.

I will definitely give it another shot though, as response to it has been mostly positive and it may just need to click with me. Weekly, however, I just end up listening to other Prurient which means more to me, sonically and emotionally; stuff like Rose Pillar, Unknown Rains, Frozen Niagara Falls, Cocaine Death and Still, Wanting. If I can speak to one element of the album; the cover, imagery, motifs, story and track titles lend it some serious allure and beauty, which is another reason why I want to keep trying with it.

View Original PostJoy Evangelion wrote:Touche Amore's Stage Four

Oh wow, didn't know you listened to TA. Sadly, this one didn't do it for me, and I think it may have even put a bit of a damper on my appreciation on the band as a whole. I loved Is Survived By heaps, the songwriting was rather phenomenal, really dynamic. On Stage Four, the instrumentals, band and songwriting took backstage to Jeremy's soapbox vocals. I get that his mum passed away, and that it was a traumatic blow for the guy, but listening to him screech and moan about it for the entire album really tried my patience. It left me with a bad taste. I haven't gone back to it even for a second go-around. Really disappointing. I still think their first three records are dope, though.

Not really much to report in from my end from last year. I liked the new Glassjaw album, which is kind of dense and lacks a lot of overt melody and hooks, but it grows on you as you scratch away at it ('My Conscience Weighs A Ton' is my favourite track, easily). The new Converge, still probably my favourite aggressive/abrasive band after all these years, hasn't clicked for me yet, although there are a couple tracks that are killer (namely the opener, 'A Single Tear'). Been listening to a lot of Deafheaven and other post-black bands like Bosse-de-Nage and Sannhet. Heaps and heaps of techno, electronic and ambient shit.

Oh, I've fallen in love with Future Islands too ^_^

Today, I have been stocking up on track upon track of DJ Sharpnel's hardcore techno catalogue. So far, I have been sampling bits of Evangelion, Nadesico, The Matrix, Limp Bizkit, Samurai Jack, and Fafner in each respected track of which the last one I didn't even know till today that the theme song was of the Fafner variety but then again I wouldn't know that because I have yet to see any iteration of the series but give me time.

For a quick comparison, here's the Fafner ED song of which i just heard right now and give it ace points:
angela - Separation

And here it is sampled by DJ Sharpnel:

Recently, I gave Cradle of Filth's Nymphetamine album a chance since I usually am not a black metal fan on misguided principles. Turns out it was a step beyond other metal acts I have listened to in the past, especially Lamb of God which I have a hard time remembering most tracks after constant listens. Anyway, the title track in it's 9 minute long form definitely combined the right elements to make a harmony of demonic precision.
