The latter would get me excited in a way no other Macross project has.

I hate myself. But maybe I can learn to love myself. Maybe it's okay for me to be here! That's right! I'm me, nothing more, nothing less! I'm me. I want to be me! I want to be here! And it's okay for me to be here! -- Shinji Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion
Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

Whether or not it's a compilation deal or a bonafide sequel is still up in the air.

Not if they get that Robotech movie into production before the Contractual deadline the contract wont expire. Let me put it this way, if Harmony Gold makes a Robotech Movie, and the movie is even marginally profitable? Tatsunoko might just see it as more profitable to extend the deadline on Harmony Golds contract for another decade to reap in some profits the Robotech movie will rake in.
The Future of Macross and/or Robotech in the US rests on that movie succeeding or failing.

Macross Frontier will be as old as best girl Ranka Lee herself by then.
Re: The Macross Legacy Thread (Incl. +/DYRL/Zero/Seven/Frontier/Δ)
But wait it gets better.
Harmony Gold still has the 'trademark' for Macross. So it's unresolved if new Macross anime could come into America in 2021 even if they lost the rights to publish and profit from material featuring the macross characters and mechs. Not even mentioning how Tatsunoko owes Harmony Gold $800,000, and with them not having the trademark, they may be forced to re-license Macross to Harmony Gold to avoid having them default on their debt and pay it off. It basically amounts to horrible IP blackmail.
See it from Tatsunokos POV. Theyr'e almost $1 million in debt and there's a chance to renew with Harmony Gold. They're going to have to look at what they think is more financially viable: renewing with Harmony gold, or licensing the series and merchandise on their own (which will be an uphill battle in pretty much every respect so long as Harmony Gold still owns the trademark).
Variables including the issues between Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko, which is part of the reason for the 90s legal shitstorm. Tatsunoko really wants to continue bringing down this ship for the matter of saving face at this point, so far they haven't appeared to have made the obvious connection that a vast majority of fans really want Macross from its original creators and don't care about Robotech.

Just came back here because fking HG and Tatsunoko signed an agreement extending the stranglehold/embargo.
This is beyond disgusting as many people who were sick and tired of those parasitical Mafia entities waited for nearly a lifetime to have the IP revert back to Big West and Nue.

Oh man... That sucks. I'm glad I don't particularly care for Macross... But still, fans of that franchise have it so much worse than Evangelion. And that's saying something.

Well, you may have to, it's now part of established history of the industry. Anno spent an early bit part of his anime career helping to put that anime series out into TV in 1982, and so far even did some tribute fanart for it as a way of saying thanks, along with some Macross tropes later applied to the Daikon mini-films, as many of the anime auteurs and figures have been interacting heavily in one way or another, that's why the saga gets so much respect.

Don't get me wrong, I'm well aware about the importance of the Macross universe. I was just trying to say, that I'm (thankfully) not that emotionally invested in it.

Re: The Macross Legacy Thread (Incl. +/DYRL/Zero/Seven/Frontier/Δ)
Well, now is as good a time as any to ask this. I read the ANN article about this and it doesn't seem that bad as it only covers the original 1982 series.
So my question is, why are the fans treating this as practically the end of the world? I mean, the original show is easily acessable these days. It has been released on physical media in the past few years, and is also available on at least three different streaming services. While it is true that there has been no legal releases outside of Japan for the later installments of the show, I know that the Japanese release of both Plus and Delta have English subtitles. It's imperfect, but viable.
It may be true that HG does resort to litigation too quickly, and that they may perhaps want to bring back a golden age for them that any sane person can see won't come back. I get the feeling though that the fans believe HG hates them out of spite, which is causing many fans to hate them...out of spite. I don't get it at all.
During the panel's question-and-answer session, Tommy Yune, Harmony Gold's President of Animation, emphasized that the renewed agreements cover the first Macross series and not the followup projects in the Macross franchise, such as Macross Frontier and Macross Delta. He added that the status of the rights for those later Macross projects is "a separate question that has yet to be resolved."

Recently watched episodes 15 and 16 of the original series. I never realized in the battle that not only Hikaru but also Milia was in the Daedalus missles path as well. Probably due to relying so much on the Robotech edit.

This makes me more uncomfortable with watching the ADV dub of original Macross TV series...
