I'll just add it's official art by (my dearly beloved) Tadashi Hiramatsu; it's the sub-cover(?) image of the 'Groundwork of Evangelion, The Movie 1' artbook--Apparently someone went through all the work of scanning, compositing, modifying (some details are changed) and coloring it... All for that single image.

It's a beautiful image in my opinion.
The prospective enhance Asuka's body and her pose is reminiscent of neoclassicism.
The tensioned cables around her create anxiety contrasting the calm created by her peaceful expression and lack of tension in her muscles.
It's the context of the movie that makes it unsettling, the image itself is excellent in my opinion.
